Chapter 1
“You’ve ruined everything, Lily!” Margaret’s voice cut through the silence like a knife. The room was cold, the ornate clock on the wall ticking loudly. The chandelier above cast harsh shadows, making the tension in the air almost unbearable. Lily stood frozen, her cheek burning from the slap her mother-in-law had just delivered. The sting was nothing compared to the shock coursing through her. “How dare you!” Margaret hissed, her voice trembling with rage. “Who is the father of the child you’re carrying? Tell me the truth!” Lily’s mind raced. She clutched her stomach, her heart pounding so hard she could feel it in her ears. “Margaret, I swear, it’s Ethan’s child. There’s no one else.” Before she could say more, the door slammed open. Her husband, Ethan, strode in, his face dark with anger. He threw a folder at her, the papers scattering across the floor like leaves in a storm. “Explain this,” he demanded, his voice icy and sharp. Lily knelt to pick up the papers, her hands shaking so badly she could barely hold them. The words on the document blurred as tears filled her eyes. “Non-biological relationship.” Her heart sank like a stone. “No, this can’t be right. Ethan, the baby is yours! We can do another test—” Ethan’s laugh was cold and bitter, devoid of any warmth. “I’ve never touched you. How could the child be mine?” The room seemed to spin around her. Lily’s world crumbled in an instant. She had loved Ethan for years, ever since their arranged marriage. She had believed in their future, in the family they would build together. But now, his words cut deeper than any knife. Margaret sneered, her lips curling in disgust. “You’ve shamed our family. You’re nothing but a liar and a cheat.” Lily’s best friend, Sophia, stepped into the room, her arm linked with Ethan’s. The sight made Lily’s stomach churn. “Did you forget what happened that night at the bar?” Sophia asked, her voice dripping with mockery. “After a few drinks, you were all over other men. Who knows who the father is?” Lily’s face paled. Fragmented memories of that night surfaced—laughter, drinks, and then… nothing. She had woken up in a hotel room, alone and confused. Ethan had told her they had been together, but now, doubt crept in like a shadow. Ethan grabbed her arm, his grip so tight it left bruises. “Sign the divorce papers,” he demanded, shoving a document in her face. “You’ll get nothing from me.” Lily’s heart ached, but she refused to break. “I’ll sign, but the merger with my family’s company must stop. You can’t take everything from me.” Ethan’s eyes narrowed, his voice low and dangerous. “You’re in no position to make demands. You cheated. You’ve lost all rights.” Lily’s voice was steady, though her hands trembled. “Then we’ll see in court. There are cameras at the bar. I’ll prove my innocence.” Ethan’s face twisted with rage. He shoved her violently, and she fell, hitting the edge of the coffee table with a sickening thud. Pain shot through her body as she struggled to breathe. “Sign it!” he roared, grabbing her hair and forcing her to look at him. Lily’s vision blurred, but her resolve didn’t waver. “No. I won’t sign until death takes me.” A scream echoed through the room as Lily collapsed, blood pooling beneath her. Margaret and Sophia froze, their faces pale with shock. “Ethan, what have you done?” Margaret cried, her voice trembling. “Shut up!” Ethan snapped, his voice cold and unfeeling. He bent down to lift Lily’s limp body. “Clean this up. Sophia, come with me.” As they left, the room fell into silence, the only sound the ticking of the clock. Lily’s blood stained the floor, a stark reminder of the betrayal that had just infolded. Lily’s mind drifted as she lay on the cold floor, her body growing weaker by the second. She thought of her father, the man who had built their family’s empire from nothing. He had always told her to be strong, to never let anyone take advantage of her. But now, she felt like she had failed him. The merger with Ethan’s family was supposed to secure their legacy, but instead, it had become a trap. She thought of her mother, who passed away years ago. Her mother had always been her rock, the one person who believed in her no matter what. “You’re stronger than you think,” her mother used to say. But now, lying in a pool of her own blood, Lily wasn’t so sure. The sound of footsteps echoed in the distance, pulling her back to reality. She tried to move, but her body refused to obey. The pain was overwhelming, but she forced herself to stay conscious. She couldn’t die here, not like this. She had too much to live for, too much to fight for. As the footsteps grew closer, Lily’s vision began to blur. She could barely make out the figure standing over her, but she recognized the voice immediately. “Lily, can you hear me?” It was Sophia, her voice trembling with fear. “I’m so sorry. I never meant for this to happen.” Lily wanted to scream, to tell Sophia how much she had betrayed her, but the words wouldn’t come. Instead, she closed her eyes, letting the darkness take her. The room was silent again, save for the ticking of the clock. Lily’s blood continued to pool on the floor, a grim reminder of the violence that had just taken place. Margaret stood frozen, her hands trembling as she stared at the scene before her. She had always been a woman of control, of poise, but now, she was unraveling. “Ethan, what have you done?” she whispered, her voice barely audible. “This… this is too far.” Ethan turned to her, his eyes cold and unfeeling. “It’s done, Mother. She’s out of the picture. Now, we can move forward with the merger without her interference.” Margaret shook her head, her mind racing. She had always known her son was ambitious, but this… this was something else entirely. “What if someone finds out? What if the police come asking questions?” Ethan smirked, a cruel twist of his lips. “They won’t. I’ve already taken care of everything. By the time anyone realizes she’s missing, it’ll be too late.” Sophia stood silently, her face pale and her hands shaking. She had never imagined things would go this far. She had only wanted to hurt Lily, to make her pay for always being the center of attention. But this… this was beyond anything she had anticipated. “Ethan, we need to leave,” she said, her voice trembling. “We can’t stay here.” Ethan nodded, his expression cold and calculating. “You’re right. Let’s go.” As they left the room, Margaret hesitated, her eyes lingering on Lily’s still form. For a moment, she felt a pang of guilt, but she quickly pushed it aside. This was for the best, she told herself. Lily had always been a liability, and now, she was no longer a problem. The sound of the door closing echoed through the room, leaving Lily alone in the silence. Her breathing was shallow, her body weak, but her mind was still active, fighting to stay conscious. She couldn’t give up, not now. She had to survive, for herself and for the child she was carrying. As the darkness threatened to take her, Lily clung to the thought of her father, of the legacy he had built. She couldn’t let it all be destroyed, not by Ethan, not by anyone. She had to fight, no matter what it took.
