Chapter 2 - A Case Killer

555 Words
Mr. Dawson has long been gone, but Mandy is still lost in thoughts. As if she was in a trance, she keeps thinking and feeling burdened about the case without knowing why. Mr. Dawson’s facial expression when begging for help to terminate the case keeps appearing on her mind as if a movie is being played over and over again.     “Atty. Mandy,” Laila interrupted her thoughts.     “Yes, Laila?”     “I just want to remind you of your scheduled hearing tomorrow. I already gave you the case file earlier this week.”     “Yup. Got it. Thanks a lot for your good work.” Mandy smiled. She was never wrong in hiring her. Aside from being competent, she is loyal to her.     “Laila, I have another case today, and I want you to do the necessary research about it. As usual, do a background check of the victim, his family, the accused, the investigators, the lawyers who previously handled it and so on.” Mandy handed the file to her.     Laila nodded. “Yes ma’am. I’ll get to you as soon as I get some necessary information.”     “Thanks again, Laila.”     “You’re welcome, ma’am. If there’s nothing else, I’ll start working on this case.”     Mandy nodded.     When Laila was out of the door, Mandy closed her eyes and leaned on her swivel chair. Ah, she needs to go home to the province after her hearing tomorrow. She needs to visit her parents who had been calling incessantly, asking her to go home.     The next day, Mandy went to the court and did her hearing with style. She is well-known for it. Every hearing is an excellent presentation of cases and battle of the brains. One who watches from a distance can see Mandy’s intelligence and wit. She does not only know how to deliver her piece but also knows how to make every witness follow her lead.     “Mr. Witness, you said in your oral testimony that you were in another place when the crime was committed. However, in your affidavit executed earlier, you mentioned that you talked with the victim just minutes before the crime was committed.” Mandy looked at the witness that she is cross-examining him intently.     The witness’ eyes grow bigger, never expecting that Mandy would find such inconsistency in his testimony.     You just said that you’re in another place because you cannot find a possible alibi, right? In fact, you lied because the truth is you were with the victim when the incident happened, right?”     The victim was taken aback, not knowing how to respond. As if this lawyer has seen what he wanted to do from the very start. She was well-aware of his plans to hide the truth.     Just like that, Mandy wins her cases everytime she has hearings. For this, she has gained prominence over the years. With her prominence comes money and fame. Yes, she is famous as the lady lawyer who never lost a single case. It’s true; she never did. In all S City, she is the only one who is able to establish that kind of reputation in a short period of time.
