Chapter 1; The Beginning
Daniel Reyes sat quietly at the dinner table, the faint clinking of silverware and the hum of conversation around him felt distant. His wife, Angela, sat across from him, engaged in a lively chat with her parents, as usual. He couldn’t help but notice ather, Antonio, and her cousin, Leonard.
“Daniel, you’re so quiet tonight,” Angela remarked, her voice sweet but absent of concern. “Did you have a tiring day at work?”
Daniel smiled softly, nodding, though in reality, he hadn’t been to work in days. He had been busy taking care of his own projects, ones Angela would never know about. The kind of work that allowed him to stay low-profile, unnoticed by the very people who mocked him.
“Oh, you know, the usual,” Daniel replied, his voice steady but with a hint of weariness.
Antonio chuckled from the head of the table, his sharp eyes scanning Daniel with an almost imperceptible sneer. “Still playing at being a small-town boy, huh, Daniel? You sure you’re not bored of this quiet life? You could be doing so much more... if only you had the ambition, like Leonard here.”
Leonard, seated beside Antonio, let out a soft, almost smug laugh, his eyes glinting with an unmistakable air of superiority. “If only you had my drive, Daniel, you’d be more than just... well, this.” He gestured dismissively to Daniel’s unassuming appearance, the plain button-down shirt and simple demeanour.
Daniel’s stomach twisted, but he kept his face neutral, not giving them the satisfaction of seeing him upset. He had learned long ago to bite his tongue when it came to his in-laws. The last thing he wanted was to give them more ammunition for their endless mockery.
Angela, caught in the tension but unaware of its full weight, smiled nervously. “Leonard, don’t be rude. Daniel’s just... different.”
Antonio raised an eyebrow. “Different, yes. But how long can that ‘different’ keep up, I wonder?”
Daniel felt the familiar sting of their belittling words, but he remained still, looking down at his plate. He had a secret they didn’t know—he wasn’t just some country bumpkin they could easily dismiss.
What they didn’t realize was that Daniel Reyes wasn’t some simpleton without ambition. He was a man of wealth and power, hidden in plain sight.
As the dinner conversation continued, Daniel’s mind drifted, his thoughts racing to the life he had built away from their eyes. He had worked hard to remain unnoticed, blending into the background of his wife’s wealthy family. But that wouldn’t last forever. Soon, they would realize the truth.
But for now, he would play his part as the humble husband—the one they thought had no value.
The night wore on, and with every word, every passing glance, Daniel felt his resolve harden. He wasn’t going to let them break him. Soon, they would see just how wrong they were about him.
