Sofia’s Discomfort Grows

1353 Words
For the first time in a while, Elena felt like she could breathe. Not completely. Not perfectly. But enough. The conversation with Julian after work stayed in her mind. Your worth is not something you earn after a good presentation. The words were simple. But they followed her everywhere. Because Elena realized something painful. She had spent years trying to prove she deserved love. To her family. To Marcus. To the world. She had built a life that looked successful from the outside. A good career. A respected position. A stable life. But deep inside, there was still a part of her that felt like the little girl who was always trying to be enough. Julian saw that part. And instead of judging it, he protected it. That scared her. Because being seen was more frightening than being alone. A few days later, Elena was at work when her phone rang. Sofia. She smiled slightly before answering. “Hey.” “Are you busy?” Elena looked at the pile of documents on her desk. “When am I not?” Sofia laughed. “Good. That means you can still make time for your best friend.” Elena smiled. “What’s happening?” “Dinner.” “Dinner?” “Yes.” Elena raised an eyebrow. “You sound suspicious.” “I am offended.” “You should be.” They both laughed. For a moment, everything felt normal. Like before. Before Julian came back. Before Elena started hiding parts of her life. Before everything became complicated. “Friday evening,” Sofia said. “Just us.” Elena hesitated. “Okay.” But something in Sofia’s voice stayed with her. It sounded like more than just a casual invitation. Friday came quickly. They met at a small restaurant near Sofia’s apartment. The same type of place where they used to spend hours talking about life. Elena noticed immediately that Sofia was quieter than usual. Not upset. Just thoughtful. “What?” Elena asked. Sofia looked up. “What?” “You’re thinking too loudly.” Sofia laughed. “You always know.” “Because you have the worst hiding face.” Sofia smiled. Then she became serious. “I just wanted to check on you.” Elena looked down at her menu. “I’m okay.” Sofia gave her a look. “That answer means nothing coming from you.” Elena sighed. “Why?” “Because you always say you’re okay when you’re carrying too much.” The words were not meant to hurt. But they did. Because they were true. Sofia reached across the table. “I’m not trying to attack you.” “I know.” “I just worry.” Elena nodded. Sofia took a breath. “How are things with Julian?” The question came. Even though Elena knew it was coming. Her stomach tightened. “He’s fine.” Sofia looked at her. “Elena.” “What?” “You said that like you were talking about a coworker.” Elena looked away. “He’s my friend.” Sofia was quiet. Then she nodded slowly. “Okay.” But Elena knew. Sofia was not convinced. The conversation continued. They talked about Sofia’s wedding. Work. Family. Normal things. But eventually, Sofia returned to the topic. “He really likes spending time with you.” Elena’s fingers tightened around her glass. “What makes you say that?” Sofia shrugged. “Because I know my brother.” A small smile appeared on her face. “He has always been independent.” “He doesn’t open up easily.” Elena listened carefully. “But with you…” Sofia paused. “He seems different.” The guilt came quickly. Because Sofia did not sound angry. She sounded confused. And that somehow made it worse. “I’m not trying to hurt you,” Elena said quietly. Sofia frowned. “Why would you say that?” Elena immediately regretted it. Because she had revealed too much. “I just mean…” She searched for the right words. “I know how much you love your brother.” Sofia nodded. “Of course I do.” “And I don’t want anything to damage that.” Sofia looked at her carefully. “Elena, what exactly are you worried about?” The question stayed between them. Because Elena knew the answer. Everything. The age difference. The friendship. The possibility of losing Sofia. The possibility of losing Julian. The possibility of finally finding happiness and having people tell her she should not want it. “I don’t know.” It was the only honest answer she could give. Sofia softened. “I remember what Marcus did to you.” Elena looked down. “I remember how broken you were.” The memory hurt. “You stopped trusting everyone.” Elena swallowed. “I don’t want to see you go through that again.” Sofia’s words came from love. But they still created fear. Because Elena wondered: What if Sofia thought Julian was another mistake? What if she lost the person who had been like family to her? The weekend after their conversation, Sofia invited Elena to a small gathering at her apartment. Nothing serious. Just close friends. Julian would be there too. Elena almost refused. But she knew avoiding him would only make things worse. When she arrived, everyone was already there. The room was full of laughter. People talking. Music playing softly. Julian looked up when she walked in. His face immediately changed. A small smile appeared. Not a dramatic one. Just happiness from seeing her. And Elena felt it. That familiar warmth. The one she had been trying to fight. “Hey,” he said. “Hey.” Simple. But Sofia noticed. Elena saw it. The way her best friend watched. The small pause. The careful look. Nothing angry. Just noticing. Later, while everyone was talking, Julian handed Elena a drink. “You looked like you needed this.” She smiled. “You always think I need something.” “Usually I’m right.” She laughed. A real laugh. And again, Sofia noticed. That was the problem. Elena realized she was no longer good at hiding around people who knew her. Sofia knew her too well. At one point, Sofia pulled her aside. “Can I ask you something?” Elena already knew. “Sure.” “Are you happy?” The question surprised her. Not: Do you like my brother? Not: Is something happening? Just: Are you happy? Elena looked across the room. Julian was talking with someone. Laughing. Being himself. And suddenly she realized something. She was happy. That was the scary truth. “Yes,” she whispered. Sofia looked at her. And Elena saw something change in her expression. Not anger. Not disappointment. Fear. “Then why do you look scared?” The question broke something inside Elena. Because she did not have an answer. Sofia hugged her gently. “I’m not saying you did something wrong.” “I just don’t want you to get hurt.” Elena closed her eyes. Because that was the same thing she wanted. To not get hurt. But she was starting to understand something. Avoiding pain also meant avoiding happiness. Later that night, after everyone left, Elena sat in her car for a long time. Her phone buzzed. Julian. Made it home? She smiled. Yes. A few seconds later: Good. Sleep well. Elena stared at the message. Then she looked at Sofia’s building. Her best friend. The person who had been there through everything. The person she could not imagine losing. For the first time, Elena realized something. Falling in love with Julian was not only about choosing him. It was also about risking the relationships around her. And that fear was becoming just as strong as her feelings. She started the car. The road ahead was dark. But for the first time, Elena was beginning to understand that every choice came with a risk. And maybe love was not about finding something without risk. Maybe love was choosing something worth the risk.
