Get the Message

Kade BEEP BEEP BEEP I smack the alarm. I've been awake for a while. Something was bothering Victoria last night, it's been eating at me since I left her house. I know her well enough to know that she was barely holding herself together, but I also know not to push her to tell me, because she is so…stubborn, no, fiercely independent. Yes fiercely independent. One of the many qualities I love about her, but also one of the most infuriating qualities. She's definitely started opening up over the last couple months, letting me in more. But still she's hiding things from me, like she doesn't trust me, or knowing her, she is too embarrassed to ask for help. She has nothing to be embarrassed about though, she's a widowed mother of five, of course she is struggling. That's completely understandable, not to mention it's only been a year. No one expects her to be on top of her s**t a year after the accident. Her entire world was completely flipped on its head in a matter of seconds. I just wish she'd let me in. I vowed to take care of her. Luke made me promise to take care of her. I just never thought she'd fight me as much as she does. I more than understand her desire of independence, they got married and had kids young. She's never really been on her own, all alone. Though if you ask her, she's been a single parent since day one. Luke wasn't always the, not to speak ill of the dead but, the most present husband. He was actually working on being better for her and their family when the accident happened. Which left her with a ton of conflicting emotions so like every morning when I wake up, I call her, and when she answered the phone clearly crying I jumped from my bed and threw on my clothes as I ran through my house. “ Don't worry sweetheart, I'm on my way! Please don't cry” I beg as I hop in my truck. “ I'm sorry Kade, I'm fine, Im just being stupid.” She sniffles on the other end. “Hey, hey it's ok. What's wrong? Why are you crying?” I ask as I gradually slow down coming to a stop at a red light. “I'm not crying! I'm just so overwhelmed this morning. Everyone over slept and we're running around trying to get out the door and f*****g Keith showed up, and just made me feel so small for running late. Which I know I shouldn't let him get to me, what the f**k does he know!? He hasn't raised ANY of his kids. It's just not what I needed this morning, and then he wouldn't leave. I had to literally push him out of the door to get the kids loaded up, and I know he's going to be waiting for me when I get back. And I just don't want to deal with him…at all!” She took a deep breath at the end of her ranting. “That's right, sweetheart, breath. I'm almost at your house, I'll make sure he's gone before you get back, ok?" “ No, I don't need you to play bouncer." See what I mean about fighting my help? " Too bad, sweetheart. I'm almost there anyway. Just say "Thank you, Kade." "Thank you Kade." I can hear her roll her eyes, but at least she's not, not crying anymore. "See how easy that was? Don't pretend like you don't like it. I know you do." "I'll see you at the house Kade." she hangs up. Fucking Keith! I would love to make that man disappear. He's supposed to be her brother in law, but he's a piece of s**t. He's got a twisted mind, and even back in high school I hated that mother fucker. He's a creep, plain and simple. He somehow thinks since his brother died Victoria should be his. He doesn't understand that if anyone gets to stand beside Victoria it's going to be me. I can't wait to explain this s**t to him..again. I won't be as nice as I was last last time. I text my daughter, Katy. Hey, I gotta stop by Victorias, tell Jude I'll be there as soon as I can. Katy - ok daddy! Is everything ok with Vic? She's just having a bad morning. Please don't call her that. Katy- whatever I slip my phone into my pocket as I turn on to Victoria's block. And sure enough I see that piece of shits little rice burner sitting in front of her house. I pull in behind him, almost touching his back bumper, and hop out, slamming my door behind me as I head to his driver side window. “Hey Kade.” he says with a smirk on his face. Oh can't wait to wipe it from his face! “Get the f**k out of here Keith. She doesn't want you here. This is the last time I'm saying it nicely” I say as I place my hand on the roof of his car. He giggles, “What? If she didn't want me here she wouldn't have called me.” Lying piece of s**t… “Cut the crap Keith! We both know she did NOT call you.” “Look Kade, she's my sister in law! I get dibs!” Keith says with a wicked grin, “You can have her when I'm done.” With that my rage skyrocketed. I reached in his open window and grabbed him by the back of his head. “Talking about her like that will only get you a broken jaw! She wants nothing to do with you! LEAVE. HER. THE. f**k. ALONE. KEITH!” I emphasize each word by smashing his face into the steering wheel. Maybe he'll get the message this time. “ Do I make myself clear?” I ask stepping back from his car. “f**k you Kade! You'll regret this!” He spits out blood all over his steering wheel as he yells at me. “Right!” I think to myself as I see Victoria's matte black suburban turn the corner. She pulls into the driveway. She jumps out and comes running towards me. Her sundress waving in the breeze. Man do I love those sundresses she wears. “Kade!” She yells as her body crashes into mine. I instantly wrap her in my arms. God I love holding her. “ I passed Kieth as I was pulling in. What did you do?!” She asks as she pulls away scanning my body for injury. Her eyes bulge when she sees the blood on my sleeve. “Don't worry. It's not mine.” I sigh as I pull her back into my arms. “That doesn't make it better, Kade.” She shakes her head against my chest. “ Well I had to get the message across, cuz obviously he didn't hear me last time.” I say as I rub her back. She pulls away again, “ I guess you better get to work, you're so late.” She giggles. I reach out and wipe the left over tears from her cheeks. “It's ok, I have a really cool boss.” I chuckle out as I hold her face in my hands. “Whatever Kade, I've heard he's an ass." she smiles up at me. "WHAT?!? who said that?" I pretend to be shocked, "He's amazing and handsome, so strong and have you seen him in jeans?" I tease. "Did you get a new boss?" she teases with her eyebrow high. "Ouch, sweetheart." I say removing my hand from her face and placing it over my heart. "Oh shut up. I'll see you later.” She steps back slightly and waves as she heads up to her front door. “ See you later sweetheart.” I say as I watch her walk away. I wait for her to go inside, admiring her body and the tattoos she's had me put on her soft skin. Slowly I turn and climb into my truck, headed to the office to meet Jude.
