Didn't see that coming

Kade They f*****g know each other!? How the f**k!? I don't know what to make out of what Jude said. What did he mean he waited for her? Was she going to leave Luke? I know Victoria isn't a cheater. No matter how shitty her relationship was, she wouldn't have crossed that line, even though Luke cheated on her regularly the entire time. I find Victoria on her balcony, she's smoking a cigarette. Just like I knew she would be. I'd bet money there's a joint within reach. “Hey”, I get her attention as I lean on the door frame. “You ok?” She shakes her head, refusing to look at me. “Alright, I'm gonna take him home. I'll be back in about 45 minutes. Ok?” I hoist myself off the door frame, ready to walk back through the house. “Wait.” She says, finally looking at me. Her face was like stone, not giving anything away,”What did he say?" I sigh heavily, should I tell her? I guess honesty is always the best policy. Victoria and I don't keep secrets. It took me a long time to earn her trust and I sure as hell ain't going to risk losing it over something like this. “Well he said you're probably mad at him because six years ago, he disappeared after you got pregnant and he got married." She laughs, “ I always knew that was the reason he disappeared. But we were just friends. Nothing more.” She puts out her smoke,”I guess he can stay if he wants. Dinner is the least I can do after he punched Keith in the face.” “Alright.”, I nod "It's completely up to you. Don't feel obligated, sweetheart.” I say holding my arms out for her. Victoria stands up and walks into my waiting arms. I wrap them around her and kiss the top of her head. She smells like coconut and roses with a hint of eucalyptus and m*******a. Undoubtedly one of my favorite scents in the world. “Unless his wife's going to be mad he's not home for dinner.” She mumbles into my chest. “He's divorced sweetheart.” I inform her, resting my cheek on the top of her head. Victoria goes tense. “Oh? Really?” She says, pulling away from my embrace. "That didn't last long." she whispers. "I did not think this was how my day was going to go when I got up this morning." she declares before heading to the door. I followed her into her bedroom. I can't help but wonder what happened between these two as I continue to follow her through the house. I remember when she got pregnant the last time, actually I was there for all her pregnancies, but the last one was a roller coaster. Luke had cheated on her again, and they handled that, the same way they always did, screaming at each other, then they drank themselves stupid but this time they ended up with a bun in the oven. Victoria was so upset she got pregnant from that. She cried for days! But once she saw that little peanut on the ultrasound she was in love. When we reach the front door, we find Jude sitting on the front steps, scrolling through his phone. “Jude?” Victoria calls his name, making him turn his head. When he sees us standing in the doorway he stands up, slipping his phone into his pocket, giving her his full attention. “Yeah V?” “Would you like to stay for dinner?” She offers, I can see her hands templing at her side. Judes eyes go wide, clearly not expecting that. “Yeah, that'd be great!” he replies with a smile breaking across his face, “Thank you V.” “Alright, it's the least I can do after you broke Keith's nose”, she returns his smile, “The kids will be home soon, I'm making crockpot lasagna.” Jude nods, “Sounds great.” “Alright, come on inside.” She says stepping to the side so he can come into the house. “Can I get you something to drink? Beer? Wine? Something stronger?” She offers as he passes us entering her home. "Soda? juice? water?" “Water is perfect,” he says, looking down at his hand, "Do you mind if I use the bathroom?” he lifts his hand cover in blood. “Absolutely!” Victoria says, her eyes widening at the sight of the blood. “It's through the kitchen, second door on the left down the hall.” She says pointing in the direction of the bathroom. "Do you need the first aid kit?" concern flashes in her eyes. “Great! Thanks!” He says walking in that direction. "No, I'm not bleeding," he laughs a little, flexing his hand. Once he's out of sight, Victoria lets out a long sigh. I look at her, my eyebrow raised in question. She shakes her head, “Guess I'll get started.” She says following Jude into her fancy state of the art kitchen. Luke built her this kitchen. He made sure she had everything she could ever want. There's a giant French door stainless steel refrigerator, a wine cooler, a wine rack and a liquor cabinet. All her appliances have secret storage spaces in the wall above the dark granite counter tops. Above the deep farmhouse style sink is a beautiful stainless glass bay window, Victoria made herself. that looks out over the front yard. She's got four ovens and a giant restaurant style flat grill instead of a stove. The cabinets are a dark walnut and the island in the the middle matches. There's a sliding door that leads to the sunroom / green house on the deck. I remember when Luke did the grand reveal. He was so proud and Victoria cried. She cooked non stop for about a week. Not that Luke and the kids or myself even would ever complain about Victoria's cooking. "Need any help?" I offer as I follow her. "You can pour me a glass a wine." she says grabing her ingredients from the fridge. "Red or white?" I asked as I head for the wine glasses hanging from the liquor cabinet. Victoria gives me the "are you serious" look. "You know there's no red wine in this house." she says pulling her crockpot out of the wall. I laugh as I grab her favorite WHITE wine from the cooler and pour her a glass. I turn around to hand it to her, and she's standing there holding a beer out for me. She giggles as we trade drinks. I lean on the counter and sip my beer as she puts the ground beef on the flat grill. I watched her grab onions and garlic and other spices and start chopping and adding them into the meat. Victoria can cook. Even way back in high school she would make dinner for Luke and I. We always told her she should have her own restaurant. Eventually she did, her and Luke worked their asses off in the place for years before they were able to hire enough staff. Victoria worked open to close everyday and Luke helped around his mechanic job. until he was able to quit and work in the kitchen full time. Now of course, she only has to own and manage it. "Will you run down to the garage and grab two jars of my sauce?", she asks over her shoulder. Yes, she makes her own sauce. She makes everything from scratch. I bet the noodles are homemade too. "You got it." I say, and head down the hall to the garage.
