(Sanais p.o.v) Last Friday | 6:30 pm - Broadways Library The library was dimly lit, with the soft glow of reading lamps illuminating the study tables scattered throughout the room. The shelves were lined with rows upon rows of books, their spines neatly aligned and waiting to be explored. It wasn't as crowded as I had expected at this late hour. A few people were packing up their belongings to leave. My shift didn't end until the next couple of minutes. I decided to wander around the book racks, brushing my fingers across the laminated covers. Carefully, I would double-check a few times to make sure the books were in the appropriate spots; if they weren't, I neatly returned them. There was a thud behind me as I passed the shelves, frequently looking at them. I turned and studied the fallen book; it was one of the Hunger Games books by Susan Collins, I believe it was the second one. I had gone to pick up the book by reaching over, but it fell again, this time upon my head. The book's hit sent a shockwave through my skull, making stars flicker before my eyes for a brief second. Instinctively, I gripped my head, trying to ease the throbbing pain rushing through my body. "What the..." I mumbled to myself. I could sense a familiar present behind me but I wasn't sure who it was. "Boo!" My body froze for a split second while I snapped my head around. "Jesus what the f**k Brooke!" I shook, dropping one book on the ground, I reached to pick it up and playfully hit her with it. Lowering my voice I grabbed her pulling her aside. "What the hell are you doing here?" I asked glaring at her while she grinned, shoving her hands in her pockets. "We should definitely hang after your shift." "Brooke , we can't—it'll be to late by then" "okay?...and?" "I need to finish my job application..." "You're no fun." I rolled my eyes playfully, going to put the books back in their original places, then turning my attention back towards Brooke who was standing there with her arms crossed just looking at me. Her eyes were pleading me, begging me to say yes, though I refused to do so. "Pleaseeeee" she mouthed the words to me clasping her hands together. "Hm..." "I'll buy you a snack later, I promise..." "Brooke you can't even keep a pinky promise.. Just imagine how disappointing that is..." I replied checking the time on my phone. I started to walk away from the aisle and towards the front desk grabbing my belongings, yet Brook was still following me. Me and Brooke have been friends for awhile, since I had just recently moved into Ellaville. Brooke had greeted me with a basketball to the face, she claims it was an accident but of course my thoughts say otherwise. I grabbed my bag, my charger and my phone. I threw my bag over my shoulders clocking out for the evening, Brooke still following me like a lost puppy. "Ugh." I groaned while I stopped a couple feet away from the front door snapping my head around to look at Brooke. "Fine." I mumbled giving her a slight death stare. "But, you owe me..." I added while she nodded her head walking with me outside the library. The sun was no longer visible, nothing but the dim lit clouds lighting out path. The wind blew swiftly bringing my hair along with it. We watched the cars pass by, some blasting music while others were silent. There was one that had a man who looked to be in his late thirties holding a cigarette out the window. "So..." I replied trying to make small talk with Brooke as she proceeded to kick rocks as we walked. "What's your plan this evening...?" I asked while she went quiet for a moment. "Why not wander around the city?" She asked with a devious grin. I immediately declined, shaking my head. "Absolutely not..." Brooke had given me that look, but I politely declined again. "Why not...." She responded in a sort of whining manner. "Because I'm busy and have a life, and a babysitting job tomorrow with the Jensens..." She nodded in response, continuing to walk ahead, her hands still shoved in her pockets. I couldn't tell if she was listening or not, but again, she was just stubborn like that. We turned the corner towards my street. It was fairly quiet, a few of the neighbors were outside watering their plants or just grabbing the mail, nothing too exciting. Of course It's a boring city. Why would there be? Later on that evening, my mother had brung home chinese food since it was a friday and she had no interest in cooking anything. She placed the bag on the table placing everything down. "San, can you grab a couple plates?" I nodded, reaching up towards the cabinet and grabbing two plates placing them on the table. I grabbed the carton of rice and veggies popping them open and putting a spoon full of each on my plate. My mom had done the same but added a few extra things before closing the lid and taking a seat. She ran her hands through her hair with a long sigh. I had sat down across from her, the light above us was dim and the atmosphere itself was quiet. I normally was in the house. "Long day I'm guessing?" "Mhm..." She mumbled picking at her food then stabbing the broccoli with the fork bringing it up to her lips. Dinner was usually silent with my mother, our conversations were normally open ended or very short. She was never home and neither was I. Sometimes I suspected we were just too busy to enjoy one another's company, however I feel as if it's just our differences in life. I had gotten up from the table heading over towards the sink to wash off my plate until I had gotten numerous text messages from Brooke. Brooke: Hey, r u still down 2 hang? Brooke: C'mon don't be a dumbass. Brooke : Me and Melody are already outside. "What...?" I whispered to myself, sitting my phone down and going over towards the door swinging it open. There stood Melody and Brooke. I was suddenly contemplating my decisions from earlier. "Hey!" Brooke replied with a smile, I just waved at her. "Um my mom is still awake" I whispered. knowing I'm an adult, my mother hates me leaving the house late at night, since I still live with her, I live under her rules. She watched a lot of crime documentaries while I was growing up, of course they became her fears as I had gotten older. Another case factor is that, I usually don't leave the house at night. I looked behind me to see my mother was no longer downstairs. I inhaled and looked back over at Brooke and Melody who both had grins on their faces. I had left the door open for a moment to go and grab my shoes, my stomach churning in circles and growling every second. I put my shoes on and grabbed my things before heading outside and closing the door behind me. Brooke had patted my back excitedly, Melody had just given me a tight hug. "Finally stepping out of your comfort zone!" "A friendly reminder that the door is right behind me" I replied with a grin while walking down the street of my house. "Yeah, let's keep the jokes for later then.." Brooke replied. The three of us started to walk further down the street admiring the dusk scenery, the lanterns created a very vintage dark ambience. The street was quiet and nothing but the sounds of crickets filled the night. my gut was telling me something. "What if we car jacked someone..?" Brooke inquired with a devilish smirk on her face. Is she f*****g crazy? Unease had rushed all throughout my body. I opened my mouth to speak but nothing came out. "Brooke what...?" I replied, my hands started to sweat and the grip loosened on my phone. It slowly started to slip out of my hands. "I mean, yeah... I know how to get the door open without setting off the alarm" she added, continuing to wander. Melody had snickered, I could tell she was thinking about it , but knowing her true emotions, she didn't wanna do it, so what triggered it? "You know, we should try it" She agreed, starting to walk ahead with Brooke. My head couldn't wrap around the words that had escaped their mouths. I was beyond stunned and confused all at once. "Are you guys drunk or something?" "Nope. Completely sober." Melody remarked, stopping in front of a decent house that looked well renovated. It had a lot of space around it and was practically the last house in the street. Lied in front of it was a black Dodge Challenger SXT, it blended in with the darkness. Melody and Brooke had jumped out of the car and rushed over towards it. scanning the entire car. "Holy shit..." Brooke replied, running her fingers across the door handles peering inside the car. The seats were covered in black leather, a blue air freshener hung still in front of the rear mirror. "This one's it.." Melody replied, looking at the other side. I stood there clinging to my phone watching the two continuously observing the car as their desire to take it began to grow immensely. "Guys I think we should go..." I retorted, my voice starting to shake and tremble a little. Brooke looked over at me scornfully. "Cmon Sani loosened up a little...well give the car back" She was definitely Lying. Melody had pulled on the passenger door handle. She watched the door open. It appeared to be unlocked "So you're telling me, a car like this? is unlocked...?" Melody replied, chuckled a tad before opening the door to the driver's seat. "please get out the car!" I shouted but it sounded more like a whisper. Melody had closed the door quietly, Motioning for me to get in the car with them. I had taken a long gulp walking up towards the car and opening the backseat climbing inside and shutting the door slowly. Brooke had shut the driver door and had run her hands over the seats and the dashboard. "This shits nice..." she replied. She saw the key ignition but realized they had no key. "f**k, I forgot we needed a key" Brooke hissed looking around the car. Melody had looked around the car also, the car itself was clean, as if no one had even touched it, it was almost as if the car was brand new again. "Sanai,Can you check the backseat for a screwdriver" Melody replied while opening the glove compartment and saw a double action revolver, she reached for it holding it in her hands carefully. "Who puts a gun in a glove compartment?" She asked observing it before sitting it back inside and proceeded to search the car. "A lot of people do actually" Brooke relates to her own experiences. She had blinked looking over at Melody. "Nah that's all you, I don't know what you're talking about..." My breath hitched, reaching my hand down on the floor of the backseat trying to see if there was some screwdriver, but none was to be found. Why would there even be a screwdriver in the car? "Found one," Melody replied, handing it over to Brooke. She had taken a hold of it and stuck it inside the Key ignition. I'm surprised she didn't get electrocuted. "Brooke what the hell are you doing!?" "Starting the car, what else?" she replied, turning the screwdriver slowly. The car had started with a low roar, it shook the car a tad. The Bright headlights had shined in front of us revealing the garage door. Brooke had taken out the screwdriver and sat it in the cupholder. She adjusted her seat and placed her hands on the steering wheel gulping a bit. She grabbed the gear and put the car in reverse before backing out the driveway quickly turning into the road. Once she was out the driveway she had started to drive off with the car quickly. "Brooke, do you even have a license!?" I raised my voice while she started to speed down the street. "I actually got my license last month" she replied with a snicker quickly adjusting the rear mirror then heading onto the main road. Brooke had failed her drivers test after her birthday and numerous times after that, Melody and Melody had decided to help her out with the driving part, eventually she did pass but nearly flunked. She was lucky her Driving instructor was nice. I sunk into the seat putting my seatbelt on, holding onto the sides for dear life. My heart rate increased knowing this was a criminal act and that we could all get caught. "You guys wanna stop at my house real quick?" She asked while Melody shrugged, she continued to scroll on her phone laughing at a couple of memes she saw. I looked out the window watching all the other trees and cars go by. Not long after we had eventually stopped at Brooke's house, she parked the car in the driveway and once again used the screwdriver to turn off the car. We all had gotten out and walked up towards the front door. "You're so busted..." Someone replied from above. The three of us looked up at Brooke's sister who was hanging out the window. "Shush, can you let us in...?" She asked, nearly begging her sister. Her sister sneered, scratching her head then looking around. "I'll let you guys in from the back" "Thanks..." Brooke replied, bringing us to the backyard, which was walled with a white gate. Brooke's Backyards was known for being clean and well-kept, with a garden where her mother regularly grew vegetables in the spring and summer, a closed-off pool, and a strange-looking shed. I always resented going near it. The lush green grass is perfectly maintained. In the center of the yard, a large, vibrant flower bed bursts with color. In my opinion I think It would look better during the evening rather than at night. The three of us had waited outside the back door as her sister slowly and quietly opened it. She had opened the door wider letting us all inside. Brooke had thanked her while she rolled her eyes and took us upstairs. "I need you to do me a favor..." Brooke asked her sister who was already ahead of us. "Hm..?" She replied. "The car parked in the driveway, the black one, can you take it to the dealership tomorrow?" "What..?" Brooks' sister looked out the window from the staircase and blinked. "Where the hell did you get that–?" "Erm...at a junkyard, we found a way to start it though" Brooke replied while her sister nodded her head. "Cool, now get out." She replied, shoving her out and shutting the door. Brooke had motioned us towards her room pushing open the door. Brooke's room was surprisingly tidy, with a few gaming consoles discreetly stashed on the floor. I had closed the door and found a spot on the floor signing. "Brooke, why'd you do that..." "I mean a car like that would grow our business..." "Now that's just upright, selfish..." I replied while Melody had laughed at me. "Chill Nia, you worry too much..." She started sitting on the ground next to Brooke. "What can I say...I saw it, I took it..." Brooke replied while I huffed and turned away from her. We're f****d up...
