CHAPTER SIX - SEPTEMBER, 1991 As far as I knew, Carol had kept our friendship a secret from her family and friends, presumably to protect her relationship with the other man. It came as a great surprise, therefore, when she said I could send her a card for her forty‑fifth birthday on the fifteenth of September. The only condition was that it should not be too affectionate and expressive. This was a great achievement and I felt at last that I had been accepted. Better still, she also said she would meet me one evening in September. She would have dinner and stay as late as possible, though she would not be able to stay overnight. After such a long time without seeing her, this came as a tremendous relief and a welcome excitement. I booked a room for myself, again at the Crabwall Man
