Untitled Episode
The Bell Beneath the Orchard By the time Mateo saw the light in the orchard, everyone in Sunnyside had gone to bed. It wasn’t a normal light. It drifted between the apple trees like a lantern carried by someone who had forgotten where they were going. Pale blue. Silent. Too steady to be fireflies, too low to be a plane, too far from the road to be headlights. Mateo stood at his bedroom window and watched it move. His grandmother had warned him never to enter the old orchard after midnight. “Something rings beneath those trees,” she used to say. “And if you hear it ring your name, do not answer.” Mateo had laughed when she said it. Now, at 1:13 a.m., the light stopped beside the oldest tree—the one split by lightning years ago. Beneath it, the ground began to glow. Then Mateo heard a bell. One slow chime. It did not come from the orchard. It came from beneath his bed. Mateo froze. The bell rang again. His room smelled suddenly of wet dirt and rotting apples. A thin line of mud slid out from under his bedframe and crept across the carpet. He should have run. He knew that. Instead, he knelt beside the bed and looked underneath. There was nothing there. Only darkness. But the darkness was deeper than it should have been. His bedroom floor ended at the bedframe, yet beneath it he could see rows of apple trees stretching into black fog. A voice whispered from far away. “Mateo.” He stumbled backward, hitting his desk. The voice sounded like his grandmother. “Mateo,” it called again, softer this time. “I’m cold.” His grandmother had died six months earlier. The bell rang a third time. Outside, the blue light vanished. Every apple tree in the orchard bent at once, their branches bowing toward Mateo’s house. He shut his eyes and covered his ears. “You’re not her,” he whispered. The voice below the bed went quiet. For a few seconds, there was only the sound of his own breathing. Then something knocked on his bedroom door. Three gentle taps. “Mateo?” his mother called from the hallway. “Are you awake?” Relief rushed through him. He moved toward the door. Before he reached it, the thing under his bed spoke one final time. It no longer sounded like his grandmother. It sounded like him. “Don’t open it,” it whispered. “I’m still in the orchard.” Mateo stopped. The knocking came again. Three gentle taps. “Mateo?” his mother said. But now her voice was wet and muffled, as though she were speaking with a mouth full of soil. The bell rang beneath the bed. And from the other side of the door, something began to scratch.
