Chapter 1
Awakening Shadows
Seraphina's POV
The crisp early morning air held to my skin as I stood before the ancient altar in my little sanctuary. Around the stone pillars murmured murmurs of the night. Over years of care, the elaborate carvings were polished, and my fingertips ran over them. This place, buried far into the forest, had mysteries much older than memory.
Sometimes images came to me as a seer without warning. Even yet, this morning seemed different. I was excited, a primitive sensation warning me of danger. The faint glimmer of the stones carved into the altar responded to my touch and reflected the energy coursing through my blood.
"Seraphina," a voice broke my meditation with reverberation throughout the room. Even as a little child, my son Asher had a voice that suggested the strength he would eventually possess. His innocent and inquisitive face was teenage. He pointed at the objects arranged on the altar and said, "What are these?"
Kneeling next to him, I remarked softly, "They are artifacts from our forefathers. They are the key to our history and maybe our future. I looked at Asher, whose intensity and depth mirrored mine. He served as my rock in this turbulent world and a constant reminder of the love I had with Lucas, the Alpha who, although not knowing about our son, nonetheless controlled the Silvermoon Pack.
The calm of our sanctuary was broken as the objects gleamed brilliantly and sent a pulsating buzz through the room. Along the walls, shadows moved, changing into hideous forms that seemed ready to swallow us. Asher was drawn in close, my body protecting him from the evil force in the air.
"Mother," a terrified-sounding Asher murmured. "What's happening?"
My heart thumping with a mixture of terror and resolve, I said, "I'm not sure." But we have to be prepared. A present from Lucas many years ago, the protecting talisman was around my neck.
A c***k ripped across the floor to expose a doorway of whirling blackness before I could say anything more. Ghoulish things with evil intent flashing in their eyes sprang from its depths.
Asher, stay behind me, I said, using my magic to fend against the approaching darkness. My fingertips sprang bright arcs that blinded the beasts. But two more, far more numerous, replaced every shade I drove out.
From the gate came a chilly, mocking voice. Moon daughter Seraphina, you can't hide forever. Whether or not you accept the prophecy, it will come to happen."
Something profound in me was evoked by the words and recollections of Lucas and our former love. But those memories were tarnished by mistrust and treachery, which resulted in my exile and the covert birth of our son. By now fate had taken us to this crucial crossroads, a decision that would decide Lunaris's very existence.
I shut the gate with a last burst of energy, the shadow creatures' echoes disappearing. Asher held me tight, his breath coming in short, squinting at the aftermath of our experience.
Hardly audible, he said, "Are they gone, Mother?"
"For now," my tired voice answered. But they are coming back. Ready, we must be. A darkness is described in the prophecy as threatening to devour all we treasure.``
Something urgent settled over me as I said. The antique power of the relics still pulsed in sync with my heartbeat, a faint light. It was time to leave our haven and look for allies who may help us solve the prophecy's puzzles and maybe heal my broken relationship with Lucas.
I responded, "Come, Asher," getting to my feet. "There is much to be done. We have had to go back to Lunaris."
We left our secure refuge and entered a dangerous and unknown world with those remarks. With the dawning sunbathing its spires, Lunaris lay ahead. Beyond such gleaming walls, though, were secrets to be discovered, shadows of betrayal, and a love that had never really died—a love that may yet be our route to atonement.
I promised to defend Asher at all costs, to battle the evil threatening our planet, and to take back the destiny predicted in old prop
hecies as we stepped into the unknown.
Lucas's POV
Long shadows were created on the cobblestones by the early light as one stood on the balcony overlooking the busy courtyard of the Silvermoon Pack's citadel. Being an Alpha meant that I was always reminded of my accountability for the welfare and safety of the pack. Still, in the middle of the everyday grind, a persistent discomfort bitched at my stomach.
"Alpha Lucas," a voice broke my daydream. My reliable counselor Marcus was looking serious. "They claim to have seen shadow creatures—we've heard of disturbances along the eastern border."
My pulse froze at the term "shadows," which has so many sinister connotations. I had discounted reports of comparable abnormalities as superstition even though I had heard of them previously. Marcus's tone was too serious to overlook the impending danger, though.
I said, "Scouting party," my voice calm in the face of my distress. "By dusk, I want eyes on the eastern boundary. Notify the related packs. Maybe we need their help."
Marcus gave his firm nod. “Alpha, it will be done.”
Turning back to the wide vista, my mind whirling, he went to carry out orders. These shadowy beings could represent what? Were they connected to the old predictions that troubled my dreams? Most alarmingly, did they really threaten Seraphina and Asher?
Love, regret, and a great will to heal our relationship were all sparked by her name alone. But years before, miscommunications and betrayals had ripped us apart, leaving deep wounds in our history.
Stella, my devoted confidante and assistant, cut short my thoughts. The peace she provided in the middle of my developing tempest inside of me.
Softly yet firmly, she murmured, "Lucas." "You look upset. All ok now?”
I threw a hand through my hair and groaned. “Stella, that is not true. Nothing is in the slightest bit OK. Shadow monsters have been reported to be seen close to our boundaries. It may be anything at all.”
Stella said, "Or it could be linked to the prophecies," her eyes narrowing to focus. The artifacts and Seraphina's homecoming indicate a bigger storyline.
Nodding, I was grateful for Stella's observation. "We need to tread carefully," I murmured, my head buzzing with possibilities. "Get Seraphina a message ready. Tell her what is happening and invite her to come here. We must talk about the best way to deal with this danger."
Stella looked straight at me and paused. “Asher as well?”
With a rush of defense, my fists clenched. "Stella, we have to keep him safe. We cannot afford to disregard the risk that the shadows provide."
Stella departed to do what I said, and I went to my room to collect my thoughts. With every choice having the power to save a life, leadership seemed like a thick mantle. I kept coming back to Seraphina in the middle of the mayhem—her strong eyes, her unwavering character, and our previous love.
I was startled to see Marcus again, this time clutching a letter when a knock on the door cut short my dream. "Alpha Lucas," he added hurriedly. “The pack next door just delivered this.”
Dreadful, I tore the letter apart. Reading the contents verified my worst concerns. The pack next door reported seeing shadow monsters in comparable numbers close to their borders.
Marcus looked at me resolutely and added, "We are not alone in this."
I said, "No," carefully folding the letter. “Not by ourselves will we tackle this. Call on any pack who will stand with us for assistance."
Marcus gave a nod that showed both resolve and worry. "I'll send the texts right now."
Time was short as preparations intensified and the shadow menace approached. Now that Seraphina will return, the key to solving the puzzles endangering our planet—and maybe to reuniting with one other.
Once more standing on the balcony, I saw the sunset as long shadows spread across the countryside. Whatever obstacles arose, I promised to defend my pack, face the shadows that lurked in the shadows, and atone for my previous transgressions. And if fate would have it, I would figure out how to mend my shattered relationship with Seraphina, who was my lighthouse in the darkness of doubt.
