Chapter Eight
The room went completely still after Adrian said it
Like even the air didn’t want to move
You were part of the plan
My chest tightened slowly, my heartbeat loud and uneven as I stared at him
“No…” I shook my head weakly “No, that’s not possible”
But Adrian didn’t look like he was guessing
He looked sure
Too sure
“You’re lying,” I said, my voice sharper now “I would remember something like that”
“You don’t remember anything from that night,” he replied calmly “That’s the problem”
I turned quickly to Ethan
“Tell him to stop”
Ethan didn’t move
Didn’t speak
That silence again
Always that silence
“Ethan!” my voice rose slightly
Finally, he looked at me
But there was no comfort in his eyes
No reassurance
Just that same cold control
“Let him speak,” he said
Something inside me dropped
That was the moment I knew
This wasn’t a misunderstanding
I looked back at Adrian slowly
“Explain it”
He nodded once
“You didn’t just follow Ethan that night,” he began “You called him first”
My brows furrowed
“What?”
“You asked him to meet you”
“That’s not true”
“It is,” he said calmly “You sounded panicked on the phone”
My heart skipped
Panicked
About what
“I wasn’t just following him,” I murmured
“No,” Adrian shook his head slightly “You were already involved before that”
My chest tightened
“How”
A pause
Then
“You had information”
“What kind of information?”
His gaze flickered briefly to Ethan before returning to me
“About a deal”
Deal
The word felt heavy
Unfamiliar
“I don’t know anything about any deal”
“You did,” he said “You found out something you weren’t supposed to”
My breathing became uneven again
This sounded too close to what Ethan had said earlier
“You confronted him,” Adrian continued “That’s why you asked to meet that night”
I turned slowly to Ethan
“Is that true?”
He didn’t answer immediately
Then
“Yes”
Just one word
But it hit harder than everything else
“So I knew,” I whispered
“Yes”
“Then why can’t I remember?”
“You already know why,” Adrian said quietly
My stomach twisted
“Because they made sure I wouldn’t”
He didn’t argue
Didn’t correct me
That was enough
I swallowed hard
“What kind of deal was it?”
This time, Ethan answered
“Something that didn’t concern you”
Anger flared instantly
“It concerned me enough to get me almost killed”
“That wasn’t supposed to happen,” he said
“Stop saying that!”
My voice echoed slightly in the room
“Everything wasn’t supposed to happen but it still did”
Silence
Heavy
Then Adrian stepped forward slightly
“It was an exchange,” he said
I looked at him
“Exchange?”
“Money, information… influence”
That didn’t sound simple
It sounded dangerous
“Who were you dealing with?” I asked, my voice quieter now
Ethan’s jaw tightened slightly
But he didn’t answer
Adrian did
“People who don’t forgive mistakes”
That same line again
My chest tightened
“And I was the mistake?”
“No,” Adrian said “You became one”
That didn’t make me feel any better
I shook my head slowly
“This still doesn’t explain why I was part of the plan”
Another pause
Then Adrian said it
“You had something they needed”
My brows furrowed
“What could I possibly have?”
He looked at me carefully
“Access”
“Access to what?”
Before he could answer, Ethan spoke
“My accounts”
I froze
“What?”
“You had access to my financial system,” he continued “Passwords, authorizations… everything”
My mind went blank for a second
“That’s normal,” I said slowly “I was your wife”
“Yes,” he replied “And that’s exactly why you were useful”
The words felt like a punch
Useful
Not loved
Not important
Just useful
“So you used me,” I whispered
“It was never supposed to involve you directly,” he said
“But it did”
Silence again
“And the crash?” I asked
“That was when things went wrong,” Adrian said
“How?”
“They found out about you”
My stomach dropped
“Found out what?”
“That you had the access,” he replied “And that you might expose everything”
My heart started racing faster
“So they tried to kill me?”
“Yes”
The answer came without hesitation
My fingers curled slightly against the strap
“But you said I wasn’t the target,” I said, confused
Adrian nodded
“You weren’t supposed to be”
“Then what changed?”
This time… Ethan answered
“You showed up too early”
My breath caught
“You weren’t supposed to be at that location yet,” he continued “The timing was wrong”
Everything felt like it was spinning
“So I just… got in the way?”
No one answered
But I already knew
My chest tightened painfully
“All this time…” I whispered “I thought I meant something”
Silence
Then Adrian spoke again
“There’s more”
My head snapped toward him
“What else could there possibly be?”
He hesitated
For the first time since he started talking
That scared me
“What?”
His gaze shifted briefly to Ethan
Then back to me
“The reason you survived…”
My heart skipped
“…wasn’t just because he wanted you alive”
My breath caught
“Then why?”
A pause
Long enough to make my chest tighten again
Then
“Because after the crash…” Adrian said slowly
“You weren’t just injured…”
My stomach dropped
“What are you talking about?”
He looked straight at me
And when he spoke again, his voice was lower
More serious
“Your blood matched something they had been looking for”
Everything inside me went still
“What…”
Ethan stood up slowly again
The tension in the room rising instantly
“That’s enough,” he said
But Adrian didn’t stop
“They didn’t just save you, Lena,” he continued
“They kept you because you became valuable”
My heart started pounding violently
“Valuable for what?”
Neither of them answered
And that silence…
That silence was worse than anything else
My breathing became uneven
“What did you do to me?”
Still nothing
Then suddenly, a sharp beeping sound filled the room
My head snapped to the side
A monitor
Attached to me
I hadn’t even noticed it before
The numbers were rising fast
Too fast
“What is that?” I asked, panic creeping in
Ethan moved instantly
“Your heart rate”
“Why is it doing that?”
But before he could answer, the door burst open again
A man rushed in
Wearing a white coat
“Sir, we have a problem,” he said quickly
Ethan turned sharply
“What now?”
The man hesitated for a second
Then said the one thing that made my blood run cold
“She’s reacting again”
My breath caught
“Reacting to what?”
But no one answered me
They were already moving
The man stepped closer, checking something on the machin
e
Ethan’s expression darkened slightly
And then…
The man said it
Low
Urgent
“Her body is rejecting the last procedure”
My heart dropped
Procedure
My head snapped toward Ethan
“What procedure?”
He didn’t answer
Didn’t even look at me
And that was when the real fear hit
Because whatever they did to me
It wasn’t over yet
