THE DIVORCE
Chapter One
The first thing I noticed when I walked into the house was how quiet it felt
Not the normal kind of quiet, not the peaceful silence I had gotten used to over the past three years, but something heavier, like the walls themselves were holding their breath
My eyes moved slowly across the living room until they landed on the glass table in the center
That was when I saw it
A set of neatly arranged documents, untouched, waiting
Something about the way they were placed made my chest tighten even before I got close enough to read the words
I dropped my bag on the couch and walked forward, each step slower than the last, like some part of me already knew I wouldn’t like what I was about to see and I didn't
Divorce Agreement
The words stared back at me, bold and unforgiving
For a moment, I just stood there, my mind refusing to process it, like if I didn’t react, it wouldn’t be real
“Sign it”
His voice came from behind me, calm and steady, the same tone he used when discussing business deals or giving instructions to his staff
I turned slowly
Ethan Blackwood stood a few steps away, his expression unreadable, his suit still perfectly in place like he had just walked out of a meeting instead of dropping a bomb in the middle of our marriage
I searched his face for even the smallest sign that this was a joke, some kind of misunderstanding
“Ethan… what is this”
He didn’t answer immediately, just watched me like he was observing something distant, something that didn’t really concern him
“It’s exactly what you think it is”
My lips parted slightly, but no words came out at first
A divorce
Just like that
“No” I said under my breath, shaking my head slowly, more to myself than to him “No, this doesn’t make sense”
“It doesn’t need to make sense” he replied calmly “It just needs to be done”
Something inside me shifted at that
The way he said it, like this was already decided, like my opinion didn’t matter
“Why” I asked, finally looking up at him properly “Where is this coming from”
“Our arrangement is no longer necessary”
Arrangement
That word again
It felt like a slap every time he used it
“Yes, that’s how it started” I said, my voice tightening slightly “But it didn’t stay that way, Ethan, we’ve been married for three years”
“And that changes nothing”
The answer came too fast, too easy
Like he had already erased everything in his mind
I stared at him, trying to understand how someone could stand there so calmly and say something like that
“Did I do something wrong” I asked quietly
It wasn’t the question I wanted to ask, but it was the one that slipped out
He didn’t even hesitate
“No”
“Then why are you doing this”
He sighed softly, like he was tired of repeating himself
“Because it’s time”
Time for what
Time to end it
Time to walk away
Time to pretend none of this ever existed
My fingers curled slightly as I tried to hold myself together
“Was there ever a moment” I asked slowly “when this meant something to you”
Silence
Just for a second
But I noticed
I always noticed the small things when it came to him
Then he looked away briefly before meeting my eyes again
“Sign the papers, Lena”
That was his answer
Or rather, his refusal to give one
Something in my chest cracked then, not loudly, not in a way anyone else would notice, but enough for me to feel it
I let out a small breath and looked down at the papers again
Maybe I had been the only one holding on
Maybe I had been the only one foolish enough to think this marriage had become something real
Slowly, I reached for the pen
My hand trembled slightly, but I steadied it
If this was what he wanted, then I wouldn’t beg
I wouldn’t stand here and try to convince someone who had already decided to walk away
I signed
Lena Carter
The name looked strange on the paper, like it didn’t belong to me anymore
I placed the pen back down and straightened up
“There” I said quietly
Ethan glanced at the signature, then nodded once, satisfied, like a deal had just been completed successfully
That hurt more than anything he had said
I turned to leave, not trusting myself to stay any longer without breaking
“Lena”
I stopped
Of course I did
Hope is a stubborn thing, even when it’s dying
I turned back slightly
“Yes”
“There’s a car waiting outside” he said “It will take you to your new apartment”
For a moment, I just looked at him
“You already arranged that”
“I prefer efficiency”
Of course he did
Everything about him was efficient, controlled, calculated
Even ending a marriage
I nodded slowly
“Right”
This time, I didn’t wait for anything else
I walked out of the house, past the doors, into the night air that felt colder than usual against my skin
The black car was already there, just like he said
I got in without speaking
As the car pulled away, I looked back once
The house didn’t look like home anymore
It looked like somewhere I used to belong
My phone buzzed in my hand
I frowned slightly and looked down at the screen
An unknown number
I hesitated for a second before opening the message
You shouldn’t have signed those papers
My heart skipped
Another message followed almost immediately
Because now he’s free to marry me
A photo loaded beneath it
My breath caught
It was Ethan
Standing beside a woman I had never seen before
Her hand resting comfortably on his arm, her smile confident, like she had every right to be there
Like she had always been there
My grip tightened a
round the phone
Then the final message came
You just gave me your place without even fighting for it
The car kept moving
But my world had already stopped
