Chapter Seven
The room felt too quiet after she said it
Like the words were still hanging in the air, refusing to leave
You weren't supposed to wake up
My chest tightened slowly, my heartbeat loud in my ears as I stared at her
“No…” I shook my head slightly “No, that doesn’t make sense”
But deep down, something was shifting
Something ugly
Something I didn’t want to face
She watched me carefully, like she was waiting for that moment
That realization
“That’s why you don’t remember,” she said softly
“Stop saying that like it explains anything,” I snapped, my voice shaking now “Start from the beginning”
A small pause
Then she exhaled quietly and straightened
“Fine,” she said
I glanced at Ethan briefly
He hadn’t moved
Still sitting there like this was just another conversation
Like my life hadn’t just been flipped upside down
“You followed him that night,” she continued, her voice calm “You thought he was hiding something”
“I was right,” I muttered
She didn’t argue with that
“You followed us out of the city, down the express road” she went on “You didn’t keep a safe distance either”
My brows furrowed
“That doesn’t sound like me”
“You were emotional,” she said simply “You weren’t thinking straight”
That part… felt possible
I swallowed hard
“Then what happened”
Her eyes didn’t leave mine
“There was a car waiting”
My stomach dropped
“What do you mean waiting”
“It wasn’t random,” she replied “It was planned”
The word hit again
Planned
“So you’re saying…” I struggled to get the words out “that crash was intentional”
“Yes”
The answer came too easily
Too cold
I turned my head slowly toward Ethan
“You knew?”
He didn’t deny it
“I knew something was going to happen,” he said
Something snapped inside me
“You KNEW?” my voice rose “And you still drove into it?”
“It wasn’t meant for you,” he replied, his tone tightening slightly now “I already told you that”
“That doesn’t make it better!”
My chest was rising and falling too fast now
Nothing about this made sense
Nothing felt real
“And after the crash?” I asked, my voice quieter now but more dangerous “What happened after”
This time, neither of them answered immediately
That silence… it scared me more than anything
“What did you do to me?” I whispered
The woman glanced at Ethan again
He nodded once
Then she spoke
“You were unconscious,” she said “Barely breathing”
My fingers twitched slightly against the strap
“And instead of taking me to a hospital…” my voice trembled “you brought me here?”
“No,” she said “You were taken to a private facility first”
Facility
Not hospital
That difference hit hard
“They worked on you for hours,” she continued “Internal bleeding, head trauma… it wasn’t looking good”
My throat felt dry
“Then how am I alive?”
Another pause
Then
“Because Ethan refused to let you die”
I froze
My head turned slowly toward him
“What?”
He didn’t look at me
Didn’t react
Like it didn’t matter
“You weren’t supposed to survive,” she repeated “But he changed that”
Something about the way she said it didn’t sound like a good thing
“Changed how?”
She hesitated this time
Actually hesitated
My heart started racing again
“What did you do?” I asked, looking directly at Ethan now
Still no answer
That was enough
“Tell me!”
“She lost a lot of blood,” the woman said quickly, stepping in “Her brain was affected… memory loss was expected”
“That’s not what I asked”
My voice was sharper now
More desperate
“Then what do you want to hear?” she snapped slightly “That everything went wrong and they had to make a decision?”
My chest tightened
“What decision”
Silence
Then Ethan finally spoke
Low
Controlled
“We couldn’t let you remember that night”
The words hit like a slap
My breath caught
“What…”
“You saw too much,” he continued “More than you should have”
“So you just… erased it?” my voice shook “Like it was nothing?”
“It was necessary”
That word again
I hated it
“It was my life!” I shot back
“And you still have it,” he replied calmly
That made me laugh
A broken, empty sound
“This?” I gestured weakly with my restrained hand “This is what you call life?”
No answer
Of course
I swallowed hard, forcing the next question out
“The medication…”
Both of them went still
“You gave it to me, didn’t you?” I said, looking at Ethan “That wasn’t for rest”
“It was to stabilize you”
“No,” I shook my head slowly “It was to keep me quiet”
Silence again
And that silence told me everything
My chest tightened painfully
“All this time…” my voice dropped “I thought I was just sick”
“You were unstable,” he corrected
“Because of what YOU did”
My eyes burned slightly but I refused to cry
Not here
Not in front of them
“So the marriage…” I continued slowly “What was that?”
Another pause
This one longer
More uncomfortable
Then Ethan finally looked at me
Straight
Cold
“It made things easier”
That was it
That was all
Three years
Reduced to that
My heart felt like it cracked open
“So I was just… what?” I whispered
“A cover?”
He didn’t answer
Didn’t need to
I already knew
The room went quiet again
Too quiet
Then suddenly, the door opened
I flinched slightly
A man walked in
Tall
Familiar
My breath caught instantly
“Adrian…”
He stopped just inside the room, his gaze landing on me
Relief flickered across his face
“You’re awake”
Ethan stood up slowly
The air shifted immediately
Tension
Sharp
Heavy
“You shouldn’t be here,” Ethan said
Adrian didn’t move
“I told you this wouldn’t stay buried”
My heart started racing again
“What is he talking about?” I asked quickly
But neither of them answered
They were staring at each other now
Like something bigger was happening between them
Something I still didn’t understand
Then Adrian spoke
And this time… his voice wasn’t calm
“Tell her the truth, Ethan”
Silence
Then
“I already did”
“No,” Adrian shook his head slightly “You told her half of it”
My chest tightened
Half
“What are you hiding?” I asked, panic rising again
Adrian looked at me
Really looked
Then said the one thing that made everything wo
rse
“You want to know why he kept you alive?”
My breath caught
“Yes”
A pause
Then
“Because you weren’t just a witness that night…”
My heart slammed against my chest
“What does that mean?”
Adrian’s gaze didn’t waver
“You were part of the plan”
