The Midnight Sounds
Chapter 9: Sanctuary in the Delta
The black skiff glided into a narrow, mud-slick inlet tucked deep within the river delta, where towering cypress trees and thick hanging moss choked out the last remnants of the city's neon sky. The rain had softened into a steady, persistent mist, humming softly against the glass windshield of the boat.
Elias cut the electric drive. The sudden quiet was absolute, broken only by the rhythmic lapping of black water against the fiberglass hull and the distant, low croak of night frogs.
Ahead, rising out of the marsh on heavy creosote stilts, stood a weathered wooden stilt house. It looked abandoned to the untrained eye—dark, overgrown, and decaying. But as Elias hauled the skiff into a hidden covered slip beneath the floorboards, Evelyn noticed the subtle signs of heavy security: reinforced steel window shutters painted to look like rotting wood, and discreet, low-light security lenses blinking silently from the rafters.
Elias secured the boat with a thick hemp line and turned to her, extending his hand. "Careful. The steps are slick."
Evelyn took his hand, her fingers shivering against his heat. Her clothes were still damp, the chill of the river seeped deep into her bones, but stepping into his hold made her blood run hot all over again. He pulled her up onto the narrow wooden dock, keeping one broad arm firmly around her waist as he unlocked a heavy keypad hidden behind a panel of rusted iron.
With a heavy hydraulic click, the reinforced door swung open.
Inside, the safe house was stark, functional, and surprisingly warm. Wood-paneled walls gave off the clean, dry scent of pine and linseed oil. A cast-iron wood stove sat in the corner, flanked by neat stacks of split hardwood. There were no decorative grand pianos or sprawling canvases here—just a solid oak table, a couple of leather armchairs, a kitchenette, and a doorway leading to a single bed in the back.
Elias immediately locked the door behind them, throwing three distinct steel bolts into place before walking straight to the wood stove. He knelt down, his powerful back muscles flexing through his damp shirt as he laid kindling and struck a match. Within moments, amber flames were dancing behind the glass door of the stove, casting long, cozy shadows across the room.
"Get out of those wet clothes," Elias commanded gently, not looking back as he adjusted the stove's air intake. "There are dry flannel shirts and blankets in the wardrobe by the bed."
Evelyn hesitated for a second before walking into the small bedroom space. She stripped off her soaked jacket and damp denim, shivering as the cool air hit her bare skin. Pulling a thick, oversized navy-blue flannel shirt from the wardrobe, she buttoned it up. It hung down to her mid-thigh, smelling intensely of cedar and Elias’s distinct, masculine cologne.
When she walked back into the main room, Elias had already shed his own wet clothes, standing bare-chested in a pair of soft gray sweatpants. His dark hair was tousled and damp, dropping low over his forehead. He turned as she entered, his dark eyes darkening further as his gaze swept down her bare legs and the way his shirt draped loosely over her chest.
"Better?" he asked, his voice dropping into a raspy, low register that vibrated through the quiet room.
"Much better," Evelyn whispered, stepping closer to the radiating warmth of the stove. "Though I think your shirt suits me a little too well."
A slow, dangerous smile touched the corner of Elias’s mouth. He stepped into her space, closing the distance until the front of his warm chest brushed against her shoulders. He reached out, his long fingers hooking into the open collar of the shirt, gently pulling the fabric aside to expose the soft curve of her neck and shoulder.
"It looks a hell of a lot better on you than it ever did on me," Elias murmured, his thumb trailing over her collarbone, leaving a searing trail of heat in its wake.
Evelyn gasped softly, tilting her head back to look up into his dark, burning eyes. "Elias... we need to figure out what was on that audio file. The code from the crate."
"We will," Elias said softly, his hand sliding up the back of her neck, his broad palm cupping her head to tilt her face toward his. "In a minute. Right now, you're still shaking, and I need to make sure you're warm."
He didn't wait for her to object. His lips covered hers in a slow, possessive kiss that immediately set her senses ablaze. It wasn't rushed or panicked like the alleyway; it was deep, deliberate, and intoxicatingly thorough. His tongue swept past her lips, claiming her mouth with an effortless, hypnotic dominance that made her knees weak.
Evelyn wrapped her arms around his bare waist, her fingers digging into the hard muscles of his lower back. She melted against his body, her core aching with a heavy, throbbing heat that demanded more.
Elias let out a low groan deep in his throat, lifting her effortlessly by her thighs and setting her down on the edge of the heavy oak table. He stepped between her legs, his bare chest pressing against hers as his mouth dragged down her jawline, biting softly at the sensitive skin of her throat.
"Elias..." she whimpered, her hands sliding up to his thick hair, holding him close as a wave of intense desire washed over her.
"I can't get enough of you, Evelyn," Elias growled against her skin, his hands slipping beneath the hem of the flannel shirt, his warm, calloused palms sliding up her smooth thighs to cup her bare bottom. He lifted her slightly, pressing his hard, rigid length against her wet center through his sweatpants.
The heat of him against her bare flesh sent a shockwave straight to her core. Evelyn arched her back, a needy moan breaking from her lips as his thumb slid forward, finding the swollen, feverish peak hidden between her thighs. He stroked her with a slow, agonizing precision that had her gasping for breath within seconds.
"Look at me," Elias rasped, his voice thick with raw passion as he pulled his sweatpants down, exposing his hard, heavy length.
Evelyn opened her eyes, her breath catching as he guided his broad tip to her slick entrance. With one smooth, powerful thrust, he buried himself deep inside her, filling her completely.
Evelyn cried out, her inner muscles clamping tightly around him as he stretched her walls. Elias held her hips firmly, his eyes locked onto hers as he began a slow, punishing rhythm, driving into her with a deep, relentless force that rocked the table beneath them. Every stroke hit a nerve deep inside her that shattered her thoughts, leaving only the sound of their ragged breathing and the crackle of the fire.
Chapter 10 will pick up directly after this intimate moment in the delta safe house, and the lock door clicked .
