Zoey’s POV
Now get the hell up and clean those filthy stains. You miserable rag." My mistress yelled and kicked me one last time before pulling herself away.
I curled on the floor for a few seconds and silently shed tears of sadness and pain.
The intense pain was coursing through my body; the spots where the glass shards pierced through my skin hurt so much, as well as the place where the iron belt fell on my back. It was a good one from Clara.
A box of cotton wool coupled with antibiotic ointment suddenly fell into my sight.
I slowly sat up and wiped my tears away. I looked at Ethan's cold expression. He was the one who just threw the wool and ointment beside me. "What?" I questioned him with a hoarse, rude expression and tone that surprised me and him.
"Wipe yourself." Ethan finally mumbled with an indescribable expression after staying silent for a few minutes, but I wasn't in the mood to appreciate his sudden gesture.
After all, his sister was the one to frame me while he kept on watching me. We both knew he could have salvaged my beating if he said a word, but he would rather smirk at me and play along to whatever Veronica and Clara the b***h do.
"It's none of your f*****g business," I yelled at him and threw back the wool and ointment at him then began to drag myself away.
Ethan suddenly pulled me back. "You'll listen to me, or I'll do it by force." He suddenly yelled at me, which surprised me.
"What the hell is your problem?" I shrugged and pushed him away. Touching him made me feel disgusted, unlike the wonderful current that ran through my skin when Aiden touched me.
"This is my body. I have every right over my body because it's mine. Aren't you tired of bothering my life? Why do you keep forcing yourself on..."
"You're my mate, it's my right to protect you." He suddenly said which made me scoff at him in disbelief.
"Your mate? I rejected you. And Veronica is your partner and mate. So leave me alone. If you can watch me suffer then leave me to do whatever I want." I said in anger.
I saw the trace of shock flickering past his eyes. Maybe, it was due to my outburst which surprised me also.
Ethan sighed and ran his hand across his hair. "I know you hate me, but you have to take care of yourse..."
'Why is Ethan suddenly acting strange today?' Rain suddenly asked.
'His Veronica b***h isn't around, so he wants to trick me again, perhaps I guess.” I told Rain.
"Why do you keep pushing those things on me? Why? So you can yell that I stole them, right? Just like how your sister did earlier. No, thanks. I'm good." I said and walked out.
Thankfully, he didn't follow me this time.
"Bad morning. Let me help." Rain suggested which made me shake my head in refusal.
Rain is quite clumsy when it comes to working, and so she only added to the burden most times.
"I've improved, I swear." Rain muttered which made me chuckle. "Okay." I allowed Rain to take over, which made her smile happily.
I watched her do all the things correctly and when I saw that she was up to the task, and she kept on doing everything correctly, I immediately fell asleep.
AIDEN'S POV
The rogues were getting unbridled these days, and they kept coming in force, so they could demolish the pack fortress if I am not careful enough. That’s the reason why I have stationed guards around the pack.
The rogue's attacks were also strange, which gave me the notion that someone in the pack is giving them information to lead them in.
Thankfully, the pack warriors were built to be strong and be an unbreakable force, or else the pack would clearly have fallen if it wasn't for that.
"Alpha." A sudden knock on the door jolted me awake.
I massaged my forehead tiredly, and I suddenly remembered the crying face of my mate, that strange girl.
She was clearly suffering, but she was so naive that she'd reject my offer and continue suffering, so she wouldn't be killed by her mistress as she mentioned.
Isn't she wise enough to decipher that if she had the amount of money I promised her, no one, not even that money-grubbing Penelope and Alpha Blake would be able to stop her? But just like the rest of the family, she was also strange.
Still, I need to find a way to convince...
"Alpha." The knocking on the door became louder.
"Come in," I said to my Beta and close friend, Chris. Due to the knocking pattern, I knew he was the one knocking.
And immediately the door was unlocked, Chris and Layla, his mate, came in holding hands with a smile on their face.
They both looked so happy, but I couldn't envy them.
For someone like me who watched my mom betray the pack and her mate, my father, despite how sweet their love was, the whole scenario has successfully cast a shadow on me.
I couldn't picture myself and a so-called mate walking hand in hand while smiling with each other because I would keep recalling the scene of mother, no. That evil woman pierced my father with a sword even if she didn’t do it literally. I guessed that’s what it feels like when your mate betrays you.
"You are lost in thought. What's up? Is it about the rogues?" Beta Chris asked while Layla kept on looking around with excitement.
After a few minutes, Layla smiled at me and pecked Chris's cheeks, "I'm leaving." She said to him and cat-walked out of my office while Chris kept on looking at her with a happy smile.
I don't see any reason for Layla to come into my office in the first place, but I wasn't in the mood to dwell on this today.
"Sorry about that Alpha." Chris ruffled his hair with an apologetic expression. "Layla wanted to see your office so much. And I mistakenly promised her, so I need to have her here, or she'll have my neck." Chris explained which made me arch my brows.
All of Chris's words gave me a sign. A weird one.
Women can be so devilish. And I saw the example on my mom, and so I would never give a woman who's giving out a weird sign a space to hurt everyone.
I would remember to send my shadow guards to watch over Layla's every move once Chris leaves my presence.
I know I'm being paranoid, I shouldn't keep judging everyone because of what my mom did, but I wouldn't give anyone a chance.
I'd rather judge everyone and know I'm safe than watch everyone stay closer to me and let my security be zero.
"It's okay," I said to Chris, which made him grin happily.
"Father told me the council elders were furious about the sudden call off of your marriage. Everything had been going well with Clara and you haven't found your mate, why would you do so? You should have been crowned as the Alpha for a while and now that you have finally found a partner that would bear your child why would you..."
"Shut up." I interrupted Chris coldly. I was getting tired of Chris's stupid rambling. It was stupid and sounded irrelevant to my problem.
"Huh?" Chris arched his eyebrows in surprise.
"You're making my head hurt," I warned him in a cold tone.
"You're so weird today," Chris says while eyeing me with a strange expression.
Before I could give Chris the reply he needed, a knock was heard on the door. "Come in," I said while massaging my forehead.
"Alpha. Beta." A guard in a black helmet and a red warrior outfit greeted the both of us which made us nod.
"State your visit."
"Alpha. The elders and second uncle had called for a meeting." The guard stated which made my expression change.
"Second uncle?" Chris turned to me with a grim expression on his face.
