Chapter 1 She's Returned
Prathik and I had been together for three whole years, and when we graduated, we naturally got engaged.
Just when I thought it might be like this for a lifetime, his old flame, Jenna, came back.
It really proved the saying: when the ex sheds tears, the current one loses.
With the appearance of my childhood crush, Randy, and the other woman's provocations, I found myself increasingly out of sorts.
Jenna is back.
I never thought such a melodramatic plot would happen to me. Just going to pick someone up at the airport, and I end up with juicy gossip, and it's about my own fiancé.
Some men, who claim to be busy with work, are right now being all sweet and intimate with another woman at the airport.
Prathik's face was full of a tenderness he never showed me, grinning like a Cheshire cat.
I really wanted to give them both a good slap.
But I didn't want to be a resentful woman at the airport; if a man isn't right, just replace him.
As they say, if you don't care, you won't be affected.
I turned around and walked to a nearby bench, sitting down.
The cold wind blew, chilling my limbs, and at that moment, my head felt especially heavy.
Well, with a head full of green fields, how could it not weigh me down?
To be fair, Prathik had it rough. In his senior year of high school, his old flame Jenna abandoned him. At that time, everyone thought they would go from school to the altar.
I thought so too, after all, they never denied their relationship.
But in reality, Jenna met a wealthy heir abroad, and the two were quite in love.
In the half year after she left, Prathik was quite down.
As a friend who knew him since childhood, I naturally stayed by his side, and before I knew it, I ended up being the rebound.
The Infinity family rules dictated no two-timing, so I had no choice but to suppress my restless heart that longed for handsome guys. Who knows how difficult these years have been.
I thought maybe this was how it would be, but now it seems that's not necessarily the case.
I playfully looked up towards the exit, seeing Jenna holding onto Prathik's arm, her bright red lips almost ready to kiss him.
I found it a real eyesore; after being abroad for so long, she was quite open.
All these years, I never let Prathik touch me, seeing as his scrawny figure surely couldn't perform well.
I disdainfully sized up the two of them, thinking they were a perfect match.
My mind raced, and my hands weren't idle either, pulling out my phone from my bag.
Such a good scene was worth capturing, so I took a close-up shot of them.
"Tsk, your candid shots need work."
A deep, magnetic voice suddenly came from behind.
I jolted, and the photo in my hand instantly turned into a mosaic.
A mouthful of vintage rage got stuck in my throat, and I clenched my phone, taking several deep breaths to stabilize my emotions.
"Didn't your mom teach you... you, you, hello!"
I turned angrily to look behind me, but the words I was about to say got swallowed back down.
A model-like face appeared before me, about six feet tall, with deep eyes that held a hint of amusement.
"What, don't recognize me?"
He teased, looking at me.
"Randy?!"
I frowned, looking at him in confusion, unsure.
Seeing him nod affirmatively, I deflated.
Speaking of Randy, we had quite a deep bond.
Randy is Prathik's cousin. Since childhood, my family and the Daniel family were neighbors, and my mom was best friends with Randy's mom. Back then, his aunt often brought him to see us.
In an era where looks matter, I was destined to be different from a young age, adhering to the belief that the early bird catches the worm.
I chased after Randy, shouting that I wanted to marry him, and even made quite a few jokes because of it.
I didn't care much, after all, opportunities are only for those who are prepared.
The chibi version of Randy was very aloof, with what is commonly known as a poker face, showing almost no emotional fluctuations.
Thanks to my indomitable spirit, I managed to c***k his ever-unmoving shell and reveal some age-appropriate emotions.
Randy's mom was extremely fond of me, which was a blissful kind of trouble.
However, when I was in my teens, their family moved away, and we rarely saw each other after that.
After I got together with Prathik, we basically had no interaction at all.
I only heard about him from my parents and people around me. At a young age, he had already founded a company, carving out a path in the business world with his intelligence and iron-fisted approach.
He had a face that made countless women swoon, yet an aura that kept others at a distance, and he still hadn't dated anyone.
This led me to once doubt his s****l orientation.
Today, by coincidence, I ran into him while I was taking photos of the cheating incident.
I wondered what he thought about his cousin's infidelity.
As my thoughts were running wild, Randy waved his hand amusingly in front of me.
"Hey, little one, did you come here today just to gather some inspiration?"
His voice carried a noticeable hint of restrained amusement.
I almost rolled my eyes to the back of my head, well, that was a high EQ way of expressing it.
"Randy, what are you doing here?" I asked curiously, looking at him.
"Aunt Avery asked me to wait here, she said she arranged for someone to pick me up."
Looking at the steady man in front of me, I was repeatedly caught off guard; Aunt Avery is actually my mom.
So, she dragged me out of bed early in the morning to pick up Randy, truly a loving mother.
Amused by my expressive face, Randy flashed a broad smile.
I initially wanted to welcome him properly, but I was genuinely disgusted by the jerk earlier, so I wasn't in the mood.
Randy half-embraced me as we walked towards the parking lot. My height of 165 cm made me seem very petite in his arms.
Perhaps due to years of familiarity, I didn't find it inappropriate, and I didn't mind getting a little cheeky and feeling his abs.
For the sake of our lives, Randy took the keys and became the driver before we got to the car.
A message notification suddenly sounded.
"Sti, I might have to work overtime tonight, so I can't be with you. I'm sorry, remember to eat on time."
I picked up my phone and almost threw up last night's dinner.
Is this some kind of bad boy drama?
"Prathik, I'm at the airport today."
I held back an eye roll and sent the words directly.
A few seconds later, the phone rang. I snorted lightly, decisively hung up, and blocked him, the process was as smooth as silk, like eating Dove chocolate.
"What are your plans afterward?"
Randy, having witnessed the whole thing, asked with amusement.
"I don't know, just take it one step at a time."
I replied.
Looking out the window at the sky, I rarely felt quite happy.
Before I knew it, the car had arrived downstairs, and I was surprised to find it was my neighborhood.
I looked at Randy curiously, not knowing why, but I found he was in a rare good mood today as well.
"I have an apartment next to yours, let's go."
Ignoring my dropped jaw, Randy reached out to pull me along, walking briskly forward.
The tingling sensation in my hand spread to my heart, causing a flutter that made me a bit uneasy.
What am I thinking? This is Prathik's cousin, an elder.
I kept brainwashing myself while gently pulling away.
Randy didn't say anything, just coughed lightly into his hand before slipping it into his pocket.
The day's fatigue finally eased when I got home.
This is a small apartment my parents bought for me when I turned 20, specifically to ensure I wouldn't be late for work.
After freshening up, I collapsed onto my soft bed, clutching my beloved Rilakkuma.
Unconsciously, my mind drifted back to Randy.
Ten minutes ago, at the door—
"Actually, I'm really happy today, Sti."
Randy's deep voice echoed in my ears.
Before I could even process what was happening, he had already turned and left.
Heaven knows I'm a sucker for a good voice, and that one nearly floored me.
But, as a modern independent woman, I still waved goodbye to him calmly and gracefully.
"Ring-a-ling—ring-a-ling—"
The Crayon Shin-chan ringtone went off.
I jolted, picked up my phone, and saw it was my best friend Lucy calling.
"Darling, I'm about to explode, what's up with Prathik?"
As soon as I answered, her angry voice burst through the phone.
"What's got you so worked up, my dear auntie?"
I teased her with a laugh, yawning as I turned over.
"You're still laughing! You weren't here today, and he brought a woman into his office and let her sit in your seat! It's that runaway ex-girlfriend of his!"
I never thought Prathik would be so bold as to bring her to the office and shamelessly try to take my place.
"And that woman acted like she owned the place, making me fetch her coffee and running me around. What nerve! I snapped back at her, and guess what? Prathik said he was going to fire me, but I couldn't care less! I threw my employee badge in his face and walked out."
Listening to her, I was furious. Lucy was at this company to keep me company, not to be bullied.
Besides, I know Lucy's character; if no one bothers her, she wouldn't care. Jenna must have gone too far.
"I was just about to share something with you too."
I told her about what happened at the airport today, and sure enough, she was even more outraged.
If I hadn't calmed her down, she might have grabbed a stick and reenacted a scene from "Wu Song Beats Ximen Qing."
"Honey, I've told you before, he would never forget Jenna. And look, you're the one getting hurt. I regret not slapping him twice today!"
At this moment, she was like a ticking time bomb, ready to explode at any moment.
"Actually, I'm okay. What I can't stand is him two-timing. If he had just told me, I might have even helped them out."
My tone was flat, as I often couldn't tell what I truly felt about him, as if it was just a habit.
"If you can't hold onto the sand, just let it slip through your fingers."
I raised an eyebrow, expressing disdain.
"Randy's back..."
After this sentence, there was a rare silence, a tacit understanding between Lucy and me over the years.
After hanging up, I sat elegantly in front of the dressing table, applying a face mask.
Suddenly, a message came through on my phone, and I saw the note: "Little Devil Randy."
This was just added in the elevator.
I gently opened the voice message, and his enchanting voice filled the quiet room.
"Sti, remember, no matter what happens, I'm always behind you. Also, I still prefer you calling me Ran. Goodnight."
Heaven is truly unfair; it favors Randy too much, giving him both a voice and looks that are nothing short of breathtaking.
As the saying goes, if anyone clips my sister's wings, I'll tear down their whole world.
I drove my little car to the Daniel group entrance early in the morning, marching towards the general manager's office with determination.
Today, I'm here to shake things up.
"Morning, Sti! You're finally back."
As soon as I stepped into the company, greetings echoed around me. To cement my status as the boss's fiancée, I've made sure to get along with everyone.
On the 27th floor, my desk is right next to the general manager's office, arranged by Prathik to keep me close.
But now, just thinking about how another woman sat in my spot yesterday disgusts me, so I just stand and wait.
I don't have many quirks, just a bit of a cleanliness obsession.
Fortunately, I didn't have to wait long before they arrived.
How should I put it? It was a scene of mutual support and camaraderie.
Prathik was holding Jenna's arm, gingerly walking out of the elevator.
I scrutinized the supposedly frail woman in his arms, thinking she just overdid the foundation.
Those exaggerated red lips looked like they could swallow a few kids whole.
But undeniably, it was a style that boys liked—sexy. If the clothes were any lower, two pieces of flesh would pop out. For the first time, I questioned Prathik's taste.
Perhaps my gaze was too intense, as Prathik looked up and awkwardly met my eyes.
He licked his lips, swallowed nervously, and stood frozen.
At that moment, I sensed the girl in his arms sizing me up, her murky eyes full of calculation, making me uncomfortable.
"Mr. Daniel, how does it feel to have a beauty in your arms?"
I said sarcastically, my eyes filled with disdain.
"Ms. Infinity, I just twisted my ankle earlier, and Prathik was just being kind to help me."
Before Prathik could speak, Jenna started her coquettish talk.
I looked at her amusedly, not holding back at all:
"Does Prathik not have a mouth? Does he need you to speak for him? Also, looking older than my mom, don't call me sister, I can't bear it."
"No, I was just afraid you'd misunderstand us, sorry, it's my fault."
Jenna looked utterly helpless, her eyes slightly red, looking pitifully down, like someone who had been bullied.
Faced with a woman's vulnerability, men can't help but feel pity.
Sure enough, Prathik got riled up, frowning as he said:
"Stina, didn't you see she's hurt? Can you stop making a fuss?"
Jenna took the opportunity to lean into him, shifting from being one-third supported to being half-embraced.
Indeed, when the ex cries, the current one loses; the internet never lies.
"Prathik, I'm not in the mood to argue with you. I heard you fired Lucy?"
"Did she complain to you? I wanted to say, Stina, you should stop associating with her. Jenna's health isn't good, she's allergic to milk, and she told Lucy, but Lucy still deliberately put it in the coffee, too malicious."
Listening to Prathik, I was both amused and angry—who gave him the nerve?
"It was clearly that woman who asked for it, and now she's turning the tables! And she kept picking on Lucy!"
Odera, the assistant who had been watching for a while, couldn't help but retort Prathik.
Looking at the utterly ridiculous man in front of me, I didn't hold back either.
"Does she not have hands or legs? Does she need my people to take care of her? Prathik, if you're blind, go get treatment. I won't let you talk about my sister."
As soon as I finished speaking, Prathik looked incredulous.
"Sti, how did you become like this? Don't you have any sympathy? Helping outsiders bully her?"
"Sympathy for what? Sympathy for you abandoning your girlfriend and then going to the airport to find your ex? Or sympathy for your blindness, holding a green tea and questioning me here? If Lucy is an outsider, then you're nothing more than dead to me."
I crossed my arms, sitting on the new chair Odera brought me, coldly watching the two clowns in front of me.
"No, I only came back because I was sick. If Stina doesn't like me being around Prathik, I'll leave right away."
Jenna said as she slowly withdrew from Prathik's embrace, her figure so delicate that even Lin Daiyu, known for her frailty, would admire it, swaying as if a fan could blow her over.
Odera's lips twitched as she muttered softly:
"With that performance, she might as well head straight to the ICU. It's so fake, it's insulting the audience's intelligence."
Watching the scene unfold, I nearly burst out laughing but held it in and said:
"Odera, watch closely. Every step is a technique to make a man feel sorry for her."
As soon as I finished speaking, Jenna froze in place, looking incredibly awkward.
"Enough, Stina, you've really disappointed me! I think I need to reconsider whether you deserve the title of Mrs. Daniel."
Prathik glared at me, uttering words that were extremely uncomfortable to hear, then went forward to pull his sweetheart back into his arms.
At that moment, I couldn't help myself; I laughed genuinely.
To my surprise, Randy came to back me up.
