Chapter 1: The trap at the border
"If you stare at the dark for too long, Your Highness, it might just stare back," Commander Vance warned, his hand resting on the hilt of his golden sword.
Prince Gideon did not move. He stood at the edge of the Sunlit Border, his golden eyes glowing in the fading light of the afternoon. On this side of the magical barrier, the grass was green, warmed by the eternal solar magic of the Lion Shifters. On the other side, the dark wildlands loomed, cold and mist-covered.
"The dark does not frighten me, Vance," Gideon said, his voice deep and calm.
"Today, we make peace. The Werewolves and the Vampires have agreed to the treaty. The war ends tonight."
"The Wolves can be trusted, perhaps," Vance muttered, looking around the heavy stone peace pavilion built right on the border line. "Alpha Ronald wants safety for his packs. But the Vampires? The Bloodlines have no honor. Lord Silas has been quiet for too long."
"Silas knows that if he breaks the truce, my father will burn his underground cities to ash," Gideon replied. He adjusted his royal red cloak. "Where is the Werewolf delegation? They are late."
Right on cue, the bushes across the border rustled. A massive grey wolf stepped into the dim light. It blinked, its yellow eyes fixing on Gideon, before its body shifted and elongated. Within seconds, a tall, muscular man with a thick beard stood there. It was Alpha Ronald.
Behind him walked a young woman with fierce silver eyes—Princess Cynthia.
"Prince Gideon," Alpha Ronald said, his voice like grinding stones as he stepped into the pavilion. "We have walked far. The dark territories grow colder by the day."
"Welcome, Alpha Ronald," Gideon said, stepping forward with an open hand. "And welcome, Princess Cynthia. I hope our marriage will bring a new dawn to both our peoples."
Cynthia looked at Gideon, her expression guarded. "My people do not care about dawn, Prince. We care about survival. Your walls keep all the fertile land in the sun. Our children starve in the frost."
"That changes today," Gideon promised gently. "The treaty grants the packs farming lands within our outer rings."
"And what of the Vampires?" Cynthia asked, looking around the shadows. "They were supposed to sign as well. They are late."
"The night is our domain, Princess. We are never late," a cold, smooth voice echoed from the trees.
Lord Silas stepped out of the darkness. He moved with supernatural grace, his pale skin reflecting the moonlight that was just beginning to rise over the dark side of the border. His eyes were blood-red, and a cruel smile played on his lips. Behind him stood ten tall figures cloaked in black.
"Lord Silas," Gideon said, narrowing his eyes. "You bring too many guards for a peace signing."
"A treaty is a delicate thing, Prince Gideon," Silas said, stepping onto the stone floor of the pavilion. "It requires the right environment. And the sun is finally setting."
Gideon felt a sudden chill. The air grew instantly freezing. He looked up at the sky. The sun wasn't just setting—a strange, unnatural black shadow was creeping across the sun. An eclipse.
"Vance, get the guards," Gideon commanded softly, his golden light beginning to flicker around his fists.
"I am afraid Vance cannot help you," Silas whispered.
Gideon whipped his head around. Commander Vance was standing still, but his eyes were completely black. Without a word, Vance drew his golden sword and plunged it straight into Alpha Ronald’s chest.
"Father!" Cynthia screamed.
Ronald roared in agony, crashing to the floor as blood spilled onto the stone.
"What have you done?" Gideon roared, his body expanding as his inner lion fought to break free. Fire burst from his skin.
Silas only laughed, his red eyes flashing with ancient, dark magic. "The Lion Throne falls tonight. Seize the Prince!"
"Stand back!" Gideon roared, his voice carrying the terrifying weight of the Lion Shifters' royal power.
Waves of golden solar fire erupted from his body, expanding outward in a blinding dome of heat. The raw energy slammed into the advancing vampire guards, forcing them to leap backward as the grass beneath their boots instantly turned to ash.
The stone pavilion groaned under the sheer intensity of the blast. Gideon lunged toward Alpha Ronald, his heart hammering against his ribs. The great wolf king was gasping for air on the blood-stained stone floor, his massive chest heaving weakly as dark, foul-smelling fluid began to bubble from his wound.
Princess Cynthia was already on her knees beside him, pressing her hands desperately against her father's chest. Her silver wolf eyes were wide with a horrifying mixture of rage, panic, and sheer helplessness.
"He is poisoned," Cynthia cried, looking up at Gideon, her teeth bared in a feral snarl as tears cut tracks through the soot on her face. "The blade had silver-rot on it! Your commander betrayed us! This was a setup!"
"Vance is under a spell," Gideon insisted, his mind racing as he turned fiercely to face his old mentor. "He would never do this willingly!"
"Open your eyes, Prince," Cynthia shouted, her hands soaking in her father’s dark blood. "He just murdered the Alpha King!"
Vance moved like a mechanical puppet, his movements fluid yet terrifyingly empty. His black eyes held no reflection, completely devoid of the honorable warrior
Gideon had known his entire life. Without a single word, Vance raised his blood-slicked sword again, his gaze locking onto Cynthia's exposed neck. He stepped past the groaning Alpha, preparing to finish off the Werewolf lineage.
Gideon didn't hesitate. He tackled Vance to the ground, the intense heat radiating from his own skin scorching the front of Vance's silver-and-gold armor. The metal hissed and warped under Gideon's grip.
Vance didn't even flinch at the smell of burning flesh; he simply drove his elbow into Gideon’s jaw with mechanical, brutal precision. Gideon tasted copper, but he held his ground. With a heavy, devastating blow, Gideon struck Vance’s wrist, knocking the treacherous sword from his hand. He grabbed the front of the commander's breastplate and hurled him across the pavilion, sending him crashing into a massive stone pillar. The stone cracked, and Vance slumped to the floor, finally unconscious.
"You fight well for a spoiled golden boy," Lord Silas sneered, gliding forward over the fractured floorboards.
The darkness in the sky grew heavier by the second, an unnatural ink bleeding across the blue vault of heaven. The blackness blotted out the sun completely, plunging the border into a chilling, premature twilight.
The temperature plummeted instantly, turning their breath into thick plumes of white mist. With a sound like a thousand windows shattering simultaneously, the ancient magical barrier separating the two kingdoms dissolved into sparkling dust. The warm, protective shield of the Solarian Empire was gone.
"You will pay for this treason, Silas!" Gideon yelled, stepping between the vampires and the wounded wolves.
He gathered every remaining drop of solar magic in his veins, fueling the fire in his core. He needed to unleash a solar blast massive enough to vaporize the radical vampires before they could cross the threshold. His skin began to ripple, thick golden fur sprouting along his jawline and forearms. His teeth sharpened into deadly, bone-crushing fangs as his inner lion fought to tear through his skin.
But as the darkness of the eclipse became absolute, the fire inside Gideon suddenly sputtered. It didn't just fade, it was violently snuffed out. A painful, freezing sensation shot straight through his heart, cold as glacial ice. Gideon gasped, the sudden loss of magic hitting him like a physical blow. He dropped to one knee, the golden fur receding from his skin as a violent tremor shook his entire frame.
"What... what is this?" Gideon gasped, clutching his chest, his breathing shallow and panicked. "My magic... it's gone."
"Did you think your sun-magic was invincible?" Silas mocked, walking slowly toward him, his boots clicking softly against the stone. "The eternal day of your precious empire is a pathetic lie, Prince. It is maintained by an ancient, thieving spell that constantly drains the life force from our dark lands to keep your skies bright.
And during a total eclipse, that spell naturally reverses. The dark takes back what was stolen."
Silas raised a dark, ornate dagger from beneath his silken cloak. The twisted blade pulsed with a strange, heavy violet light that seemed to swallow the dim surroundings. Before Gideon could summon the strength to stand, Silas lunged with supernatural speed. He drove the dagger deep into Gideon's right shoulder.
Gideon screamed, a sound of pure agony that echoed off the surrounding mountains.
It wasn't a normal wound. He could feel something liquid, heavy, and absolutely freezing pouring from the hollow groove of the blade straight into his bloodstream. It felt like liquid night, a corrupting, toxic tide eating away at his golden light, turning his veins to ice.
"Your light is dead, Prince," Silas whispered in his ear, his breath smelling of cold copper. "Welcome to the Night."
Gideon tried to shift, trying to call upon the majestic golden lion that had always lived within his soul. But the image in his mind shattered into a million jagged pieces. Instead of a creature of light, a horrific, dark shadow twisted violently within his chest.
The pain of the corruption forced his bones to c***k and reform. His fingernails elongated, hardening into pitch-black, razor-sharp claws. He let out another roar, but the sound didn't belong to a lion anymore. It was a distorted, terrifying sound, a monster howling from the deepest, most forgotten abyss.
"Gideon!" Cynthia shouted, staring at him in sheer horror as the dark veins crept up his neck, turning his skin ash-grey.
"Look at him, wolf girl," Silas laughed, tearing the dagger free from Gideon’s shoulder. Black fluid, mixed with faint traces of glowing gold, leaked from the wound. "He belongs to us now."
Gideon collapsed onto his hands and knees, fighting for control of his own brain.
The world was spinning, the black veins throbbing painfully behind his eyes. He could feel a foreign, savage hunger waking up inside him, an entity made of smoke and gravity that wanted to tear the world apart.
"Grab the wolf girl and the Prince," Silas commanded, gesturing to his heavily armored elite guards. "Tie them well. We move before the Solarian scouts realize the barrier has fallen."
Two massive vampires stepped forward, slamming heavy silver-lined cuffs onto Cynthia’s wrists before she could shift. She fought wildly, kicking and biting, but without her father's pack backup, she was quickly overpowered and pinned to the stone floor.
"You won't get away with this, Silas," Cynthia snarled, her silver eyes burning with unbreakable defiance even as they dragged her toward the dark border. "My packs will hunt you to the ends of the earth for what you did to my father!"
"Your packs will be far too busy fighting the lions," Silas replied smoothly, wiping Gideon's black blood from his blade with a silk handkerchief. "By morning, the King will think the wolves murdered his precious heir, and the packs will believe the lions slaughtered their Alpha King. The war begins now, and we shall inherit the ashes."
Gideon tried to push himself up, to sink his new black claws into Silas's throat, but the heavy, corrupting fluid in his brain pulled him down into the darkness. His vision faded to black,
the triumphant laughter of the vampires the last thing he heard before the night claimed him completely.
