Angel POV
It was quiet outside, my mother had finished covering the doors and was now gone. I got a link from Ryan.
"Angel, grab Marvel and run!" I tried to send one to him about where I was, but he had blocked me. He probably would not be disturbed in the fight. The Alpha and Beta kept sending links to escape, so eventually I blocked everyone!
Only then did I see that I was sitting in a large storage room. Every home in the settlement had one, but neither that of my parents nor that of my new home were that large. My mother had probably thought that it was best to hide me here, this had to belong to the pack house. There were wooden shelves along the back wall where pickled fruit and vegetables stood in glasses. Along one wall stood potatoes in sacks and from the ceiling hung nets of onions and nuts at each end of the room. Even though it was dark, I could with my wolf's eyes see almost as well as a cloudy night with sparse moonlight. I could see that one wall was bare by the floor, hanging only the onions in nets from the ceiling. Only the back wall and ceiling were supported by planks, floor and the rest of the walls were of stamped earth.
Suddenly I could hear something outside the gates, at first there was a sniff, but it was immediately drowned out by shouting male voices and boot trampling. I immediately put Marvel to my chest, to give her comfort, but mostly to keep her quiet. If there were those dogs Ryan had told me about, then they would be able to hear her if she cried! The voices and boots disappeared and I listened intently. Then I opened the link and listened to my pack. But everything was quiet!
I began to cherish the hope that now it was over, but it did not last long. A rumble started, I do not know how I can better describe it ... but it sounded dangerous and I moved unknowingly backwards away from the doors. I stopped abruptly as I felt the shelves with the many glass jars behind me. What if one of them fell down and broke!
The unknown rumble became louder and louder, closer and closer, soon it sounded to be over me, but neither the doors nor the ground around them gave way, so there was nothing above me that touched the ground, even though I could hear something. Little by little I could feel that it was getting hotter and hotter, then it dawned on me, they had set fire to the buildings and the forest! My father had told of hunters far away, who used fire to hunt game out of their hiding places, so they were easier to catch. That's what the Huntsmen did! They wanted to hunt survivors in hiding so they were easier to find and kill. I crawled under the nets whit onions, the wall was without wood, so there was only the cold soil, I hoped it was cold enough.
I do not know how long I sat in the heat, listening to the fire rumbling over me, branches breaking off trunks and falling down with a loud bang. The heat was unbearable, but I could not crawl out ... only down! I started to dig with my free hand. I was still holding Marvel to my chest, it was so hot and I was afraid that without fluid she would not be able to stand it. I got dug out under me, the ground I dug up I covered part of myself with, it was cold and kept some of the heat away.
I lost every sense of time, I could have sat under the ground for three hours, maybe six or more! But I was starting to get hungry and very thirsty from the heat. I looked at the nearest glasses; pickled tomatoes, cucumbers, apples and pears were what I could see. I skipped the cucumbers, they were stored too sour, it should not be in Marvel's milk, not if I could avoid it. I took a glass of apples, they would be sweet and the liquid would surely quench my thirst. I quickly emptied two glasses of the liquid, the apple pieces took a little longer to eat. After eating and drinking, I felt tired. I still do not understand how I could sleep, but it was probably the pregnancy that took on me.
When I woke up again the rumbling sound was gone, I could still hear something, but it was more muffled than before. However, the heat felt more intense. I thought of a bonfire, flames whims, embers warming! So the fire had gone out, but there were still embers up there! It would be far too dangerous to venture out now. Marvel was asleep, so I made a small dent in the soil I had dug out and put her in it, covering her body whit more soil. I took a glass of pears and drank all the liquid in it, in one go. Then I took the pears out and laid them down to the apples. The empty glass I used to dig with, it went a lot better than with one hand. It felt like an eternity, but soon I had dug a small cavity out into the wall under the onions. I put a few glasses of apples and pears in the bottom before picking up Marvel and crawling inside. Then I scraped the soil up in front of us, like a little shield against the heat. I drank and ate, fed Marvel and then fell asleep again.
I have no idea how many times I woke up and fell asleep again and again. I do not know if there went one, two or more days while I was sitting down there. I just know that in the end, it felt like I could not breathe. I took courage, put Marvel in the cavity and crawled to the doors. I pushed gently on them, but they did not give up, so I put more effort in, even with my back to them and my feet in the ground, I could not open up. I examined the ground around the frame and found that it was looser on the side with the potatoes than on the side with our hole in the sidewall. I found my jar and set out to dig myself out. After a few minutes I got dug out next to the frame. The light out there was so strong after so long underground without light. I missed with my eyes and while getting used to the light, I listened to the forest once more. It was completely quiet out there, I could not even hear birdsong! I dared it, sticking my head out and looking around a bit. There was a branch above the doors, it was below another branch and therefore my exit was impossible to open from the inside. I continued digging and soon the hole was big enough for me to crawl out.
