Chapter 8

Pete’s POV I started riding towards our capital. Along the way, I met other lone wolves who always looked at me with suspicion. They could not smell that I was a wolf, because of my potion, but I could smell them from a long distance. When I met these wolves I was never in doubt for very long. These wolves were not expelled, but only alone because their pack had been exterminated. Although I knew that Maxwell and his parents would welcome these wolves, I did not dare entrust this to them. Should they be discovered, they could mean danger to the Yellow Moon pack, that they knew where they could go! It was too dangerous. The first time I made contact with some of these alien wolves was when I met a somewhat ragged young family. A young stretch male wolf, his mate and their two small pups. I offered them warmth by my fire, shared the food I had with them and gave them my blanket for the kids. They were very grateful and I could not bear the thought of them having to travel around with two little pups. I asked them to travel northeast, they did not know where to go, but I promised them that they would know when they arrived. I could do nothing but get on my horse and continue my journey south. I visited several of the little pack's that were left, I met several young Alpha and Beta daughters, but either they were too young, or most had decided on a mate. The few who matched with age and were free, both sides agreed that we were not a fit. So my journey continued. I arrived in the capital three weeks after my departure. For a young man, wolf or human, the big city had a lot to offer. There were inns, theater and women! Lots of women, the vast majority were human women, but I soon discovered that many female wolves without a pack had found there way to the capital to find something. Some sought a way to survive, others a life without loneliness and some simply sought to hide in the crowd. These wolves were harder to sniff than those I had met in the country. These wolves had potions to hide with, just like myself. Although I was of noble blood and would receive many invitations to dinners and balls if I let my presence known, I chose to use less fine hotels and instead sought the acquaintance of the lone wolves. One evening I visited a less nice pub and sat with an old male wolf without a pack. He was grumpy and thirsty, but he possessed much knowledge. When we had had our fourth beer, he leaned forward and asked if I had discovered that our server, a girl, was a wolf! I had to confess that I had not. She did not smell the slightest bit of wolf and did not seem to care more for us than she did for others. He just laughed and asked me to take a closer look at the girl. So I did. She was slim and had the grace of a cat. I remember thinking it was funny that he had called her a wolf, because her movements were most reminiscent of a cat. But the more I studied the girl, the more I could see that it was not a lazy cat, but a predator on the hunt! Although I compared her to a cat, I could see that she seemed healthier than the rest of the staff. Her skin was clean and fresh to look at, not cloudy and wrinkled like the other girls. She also did not cough, or gasp for breath as she walked around the large smoke room. She just seemed healthier than the others. I looked at my partner, raised my hand and shouted for two more beers. The girl immediately came over whit them and when I handed her the payment, I gave her a big smile and let my canines grow a little. Not much, most people would not notice it, but a wolf would! She saw it, but pretended not to. I stayed seated until closing time. Eventually I pretended to be half asleep while following the girl with my eyes closed. "Why are we staying here?" complained my wolf, he knew well that I was keeping an eye on the girl. "She's not for us!" I ignored him and stayed where I was. "Shelia! Get the last of your customers out!" The innkeeper pointed at me and I could see the girl looking over at me and sighing deeply. She came over and began to shake my shoulder. "Get up and get going!" she whispered before shouting right in my ear "Go home!" I sat up slowly looking around confused, but Shelia just bent down and looked me straight in the eye. "Drop it! I know what you are and don't play stupid here!" She grabbed my neck and pulled me up. She really had the strength! "It's good Shelia, I knew you were a price!" Shouted the innkeeper. "Look there girls! That's how we get rid of the last ones!" I straightened up more and on the way out the door, I turned and looked at her. "Please meet me tomorrow!" She laughed, "It's tomorrow! Now go away!" I walked a few steps backwards and she slammed the door in front of my nose. I went back to my hotel room, washing dust, smoke and other foul odors off me before going to bed. I was lying and looking up at the ceiling, I wanted to talk more with the girl, Shelia, my wolf might have been right when it said she was nothing to me, but I would still like to see her again!
