Pete POV
The house was sumptuous, the facade itself was of white stone, with dark gray cornerstones. The front door was raised half a flight of stairs above street level. The stairs were of a gray stone and wide enough for five men to walk up side by side without touching each other. The front door was wide and of dark oak. There were tall windows all the way along the facade on the ground floor, and at least as many on the first floor. The door was opened even before I reached all the way to it. An immaculate butler greeted me with a bow.
"They are waiting for you Lord Stanly!" Her Elisabeth knew more about me than I cared about! In the great hall, the butler took my hat and coat before showing me into a salon. Lady Elisabeth sat with two other women, both old enough to be her mother. One looked like her, the blonde hair was a little more ash colored, but the shape of the eyes and face matched. I first turned my attention to her when I assumed this was her mother, and therefore the lady of the house, maybe even Luna. I walked over to her, bowing politely:
"It's an honor to be invited!" Elisabeth laughed out loud before her mother could answer.
"Invited? More ordered!" Her mother sent her a sharp look before extending her hand towards me.
"It's an honor to receive them Lord Stanly! May I call them Pete?" I took her hand and gave it a little kiss.
"I hope you will, my Lady!" I straightened up and looked at the last woman at the table. Lady Melbury also looked at her,
"This is my Beta female, Lady Dwelbury." She held out her hand, I also took this and gave it a polite kiss. Eventually I waited for Elisabeth and looked skeptically at her. She just ignored me and took a biscuit from a dish, dipped it in her tea and sucked childishly on it.
"Please take a seat Pete, enjoy a cup of tea with us!" Lady Melbury held out a hand to the last seat at the table. I sat down and the Beta poured me a cup of tea.
"Since you let me call you by your first name, it's probably fair that you know ours!" Lady Melbury cut a scone over, put butter on it, and handed it to me. I toke it with a polite nod and a smile.
"My name is Penelope and my Beta name is Anna." I took a bite and had to moan about how good it was. I had not had such good food since I left home.
"What are you doing here, so far from home?" Asked Luna Penelope. I straightened up, took a deep breath.
"I'm looking for a mate!" Elisabeth started laughing again, while her mother and Beta looked both surprised and discouraged.
"I'm sorry Pete, now I do not know what it is like were you come from, but I have not heard of anyone who has found there fated mate for over ten years!" I nodded, holding both hands up in front of me and sighed.
"I know that Luna, and I'm not so optimistic to hope to find my fated either. I'm just hoping to find one who will be a suitable mate, one whom I myself must choose!" Luna Penelope and Anna looked at each other, then they both looked at Elizabeth. She sat and put butter on a bun and put on plenty of jam. Luna Penelope then looked at me again.
"I can only regret, Elisabeth is already promised away!" I hurried to shake her head and smile reassuringly at her.
"I did not come here with expectations of that kind! I do not know what Elisabeth has told about how we met, but I did not expect anything in that direction!" Elisabeth leaned forward.
"I told you, he followed me into the store. I just left a message for him to come here!" I nodded affirmatively. Luna Penelope sighed deeply.
"You have to apologize Elisabeth, she's not only quite impulsive, but at times a little rude!" She looked a little annoyed at Elisabeth, but then turned her attention back to me.
"What's the plan then? Since we had not heard you were in town, I'm assuming you want to be invisible?" I shrugged a little.
"I was a little curious about the wolves that live here in the city but do not belong to a pack! I have no plan on how I will find and choose a mate." Luna Penelope clasped her hands together and smiled big.
"Let's have a ball, a real party, to welcome you? There are several Alphas in town who have daughters of the right age!" I thought briefly about it, I had no reason to hide in the city anymore, I had seen how the lone wolves lived and I did not expect to learn more about it. I could quickly get my stuff moved to a better hotel and let people know I was in town. I nodded and smiled kindly at Luna Penelope. Elisabeth snorted.
"As if any of those girls would like to move out to the country!" I looked at her whit amazement, what wolf would not prefer forests and fields to the noise and chaos of the city? Luna Penelope rolled her eyes and looked kindly at me.
"Do not listen of her, she has never been allowed to run free and does not understand what joy it, she prefers a beautiful dress and a hat!" I nodded, I still did not understand, but it might not be for me to understand either. The only thing I understood was that I could not choose a mate who did not value life as a wolf, as much as life as a human. I enjoyed the rest of the tea with the ladies, we got a day agreed for the ball and otherwise we talked about everything else than the hunt for wolves.
That night as I lay in my new bed, in my new hotel room, I thought about the difference between Shelia and Elisabeth. I had no doubt that Elisabeth was of alpha blood and that she was well educated, albeit a little too spoiled. But she was not in contact with her wolf, I had no doubt about that. Although she may have moved like a wolf and had all the benefits of being a wolf, I doubted she understood her wolf, or for that matter was interested in it. Shelia, on the other hand, had managed to hide her wolf, even from other wolves, this could only indicate cooperation between herself and her wolf. A collaboration that was based on a desire to survive. I had a clear idea that she would love to live far away from the noise of the big city, to be able to move freely, both as a human and a wolf. Maybe I should not look for an Alpha daughter, but for someone who would be able to aim for the same values as me?
