Angels POV
In the evening I reached a small farm. I sat hidden behind trees along the creek, watching the yard. The only one I saw was an older man and a moth-eaten old dog. I took courage to myself, and walked towards the farm, I came to the courtyard, and soon the dog came snuggling out to me. It sniffed curiously at me and I remembered what Ryan had said about dogs that could smell the wolf in us! I squatted down and held out a hand. With the other hand, I took a small leg from my rabbit and handed it to the dog. The dog sniffed first at my hand, then at Marvel in the sling before snatching the leg and snuggling around behind the house. When I looked up, I saw the older man standing in the doorway and looking at me.
"Odd, that dog never like strangers!" He shouted at me before starting to walk towards me. I wanted to run away, but I did not know where to! When he had reached all the way to me, he looked closely at me, and at Marvel in the sling.
"What are you doing here all alone?" I tried to stick to the truth as it was easiest to remember.
"My husband is dead, I could not stay in our home!" He nodded, looking somewhat dissatisfied.
"That just like the fine nobles, throwing a young widow with a child out of her home!" He looked at my net "You know how to gather food, can you make it too?" I nodded, afraid to say anything wrong.
"If you cook for us, then you can stay here a little time! I have not had a proper meal since my wife died last year!" I smiled and nodded, still too scared to speak. He took my net and started walking towards the farmhouse.
"If you clean it yourself, then there is a guest room up in the gable!" He nodded toward the south end of the house. "My legs can not stand to go up there anymore, but if you can take care of it yourself, feel free to use it." I hurried to follow him into the house.
First, he showed me into the kitchen, showed me the pantry, and pointed to a well outside.
"I think you can find most of it yourself now. I'm getting firewood for the stove." Then he went and I took time to look around. There was a thick layer of dust over most of all the surfaces, but a little water and I should probably be able to cook. I found potatoes and smoked sausages in the pantry. I fetched water from the well and put it on the stove in the biggest pot I could find. While the water warmed up, I peeled potatoes and carrots. When the potatoes were in a pot on the stove, I took off the hot water and started washing the kitchen table and everything else. I put the sausages in the water with the potatoes when the water was hot. When the dining table and the rest of the kitchen were clean, I took the potatoes and sausages off. I mashed the potatoes while the sausages were allowed to fry on a pan. Soon I put a plate on the table with mash and sausages. I shrugged a little, but he nodded and took a bite. I felt like an eternity passed before he smiled and took one more bite.
"I must say girl, you can cook!" I breathed a sigh of relief, took a bucket and took off the hot water. Then I walked towards a door where I had seen a steep staircase outside as we entered.
"Listen, where do you think you're going?" I stopped in horror and had almost spilled the water. "Sit down and eat! You have made the food, then you must eat too!" I set the bucket, and hurried to take food for myself. Marvel was awake so I thought I would try to give her a little. It took her a bit, but she ate fine of the potatoes, I did not dare let her get sausages.
"Yes yes little mother, now remember to eat yourself!" I looked up at the older man who was sitting and smiling at Marvel. She babbled with one hand on her way into her mouth, she had mash between her fingers. I went to eat, it tasted good, better than I had expected, and I was thankful that I did not sit outside in the darkness that had fallen on while I was cooking.
The guest room was not dirty as such, but it was dusty and stuffy. I opened the window and hung the duvet out of it while wiping dust off. I shook the pillow out the window and knocked on both it and the duvet when I heard the man calling out by the stairs. I looked at Marvel, who was lying on my cloak playing with her feet. I went out to the stairs and the man and the dog both stood downstairs looking up at us.
"I have clean bedding for you!" I crawled gently down the stairs and shyly accepted it. The dog rubbed its head against my leg and I scratched it hesitantly behind the ear.
"I do not understand, even I can not come near his ears! But he likes you!" He nodded with a satisfied look at the dog, then looked at me.
"You're missing something?" I shook my head and smiled gently at him. He nodded and grumbled a little to himself.
"Well then good night! I get up with the chickens, so I have to find my bed too ... I hope you can make breakfast, just as well as you can make dinner!" I nodded with a big smile and whispered a quiet goodnight before crawling up and making the bed. I crawled into bed with Marvel between myself and the wall. I immediately fell asleep, hot and full.
