Lorraine Blackburn stands in the entrance of the ballroom and watches some Omegas setting centerpieces on tables as professional decorators hang a large tapestry with the pack crest on the wall behind the Alpha’s table. A long Oak table elevated above, so that the Alpha family is seated slightly above everyone else.
“This better be ready on time.” Lorraine says from the doorway authoritatively. We have packs coming from all over. Don’t embarrass you Alpha.” She barks before turning to leave.
She walks down the hall to the Alpha’s office. She brazenly pushes the door open without knocking and walks in. “Luke, these omegas better not screw this up. They will all be looking at Heather. She should be the center.” She says loudly as she walks in and deposits herself onto a plush couch covered in velvet.
Luke sits there and watches her, while holding the phone receiver to his ear. “Yes, I look forward to discussing this issue. See you in a few days.”
“How many times have I told you that even though you are Luna, you need to knock on my door.” He says almost growling at her.
“Oh please. I am your mate. There are no rooms I must ask permission to enter in my own home.” She says waving her in dismissal.
“You need to remember, I am the Alpha and this has never been YOUR HOUSE.” He growls.
Lorraine looks at him and laughs. “Seriously? You should thank me for improving your image. Imagine if that mutt Rita were still alive.” She says almost laughing.
Luke looks up at her, “You need to be careful.”
“As long as my daughter catches the eye of a high ranking wolf I don’t care. You are better off without that mutt first mate and her pathetic pup. Heather tells me she is a complete loser.”
“What are you talking about!” He demands using his Alpha voice compelling her.
“The kid, Katarina. She is in school with Heather. She lived.” She says smirking.
“Leave!” He shouts trying very hard not to shift and rip her throat out. She giggles and then walks out.
Luke sits at his desk, his chest heaving as he catches his breath. “Why is she all of the sudden talking about Rita, and how…did Kat survive?” He wonders aloud.
He feels his wolf at the surface of his mind. “Pup lived. I told you our pup lived! I told you our new mate was bad.” His wolf says before retreating to the back of his mind.
“I wonder if she caused Rita’s death.” He mutters to himself. “She will get what she deserves.”
Katarina wakes and dresses and readies herself for her shift. Usually enjoying the weekend because she has long shifts and sometimes gets overtime. “Hopefully there are call offs for the dinner shift.” She mumbles while securing her hair in a bun and then grabs her bag and leaves the room closing the door behind her.
“Where are you going this early?” Mrs. Stanton asks, taking a gulp from her coffee. “I have a shift.” She replies while walking. Knowing if she stops, she might get roped into a chore and be made late for work.
“It must be nice to be dripping in cash from your fancy job. Better be saving it up, you are outta here the day you turn 18. The woman screeches at her as she walks out of the door.
Katarina walks from table to table, getting orders, clearing tables and topping off coffee. She pockets her tips and keeps moving. Loving weekends because she gets longer shifts, and most times can avoid her enemy Heather Blackburn.
The door opens, ringing a small bell above it to signal when a new customer arrives. She looks up and sees Devon Blackburn walk inside and waits at the hostess stand.
Katarina walks over and grabs a menu from the desk.
“Just one?” She asks, smiling.
“Yes.” He says looking at her almost too intently.
“Right, this way.” She says, leading him to a small booth. He sits, still watching her, as if studying her face.
“I’ll give you a few minutes.” She says before walking away.
Katarina walks behind the counter, gets the water pitcher and returns to the table. She pours water into a small glass on the table. She notices him staring at her, she can feel it as if his gaze could look through her.
“You look familiar, do we know each other?” He asks, stopping her before she walks away again.
“I think we went to school together. I am in the same class as your sister, Heather.” She says and then looks down, immediately wishing she hadn't said that.
“You know that brat? I am truly sorry.” He replies grinning. Katarina releases a quiet and short laugh.
“I know what I want to order.” He says and watches her take out her order book from an apron pocket. After jotting down his order, she walks away and gives the order to the cook. After bringing Devon the soft drink he ordered she busies herself with her work.
Devon continues to watch her. His eyes gloss over, and he converses with his wolf. “I know, she looks just like my mother. We need to learn more about her.”
“She has wolf. I sense her wolf but it’s faint. Like wolf is deep sleeping but can’t wake up.” Raglan his inner wolf says.
Suddenly she appears and his eyes go back to their dark green and he smiles at her and the food. She sets it on the table, “is there anything else I can get you?” She asks. “Some steak sauce.” He replies.
She grins, and pulls a bottle of A-1 out of her apron pocket. “I believe in being prepared.” She replies, setting it on the table near his plate.
“Raglan, I think we found our long lost sister.”
“It’s time she comes home then.” The wolf replies and then moves to the back of his mind.
