“Talia.” Her mother calls from the bottom of the stairs. “Come on, we're going to be late. You know how the Alpha is about being on time.”
“Mother, the party isn’t for hours.” She calls coming from her room with her hair wet still from her shower.
“You know the pack is expected to be there earlier than that.” She replies.
Talia looks at her mother, then narrows her eyes, “Kat should be there. She should be standing next to her father. Not wasting away in a foster home with humans.” She says flatly.
“I know, and her time will come. This party is to welcome Devon home. Alpha might make some announcements.” She says looking at her daughter.
“We will be wearing fancy clothes and eating rich people food, meanwhile Kat slaves away at the diner. She doesn’t even know who she really is. Or that she is a wolf. How is that fair?” Talia asks.
“I want more than anything to see my friend still alive, and her daughter at her side. But, we can’t have that. We must go on. Ruthie wouldn’t want us to lay down and give up. Kat will know all she needs to very soon. We honor her by watching over her daughter.” She says and then turns her daughter gently toward the stairs.
“Now, go and get ready. We leave in an hour.” She says gently pushing Talia forward.
Lorraine Blackburn walks through the ballroom checking the decor. She walks from table to table and checks each centerpiece and adjusts it to her liking. She looks around at people working.
“It had better be perfect, if you omegas know what is best for you. Not only are we welcoming Devon home, but introducing Heather to society. Nothing can go wrong.” She demands with her voice taking on the usual high pitched shrill she uses when invoking authority.
Lorraine walks to the stairs and ascends the wide wooden staircase. She stops at a door and walks in. She smiles finding Heather seated at her vanity. She is surrounded by people fixing her hair, and applying the perfect makeup to her face.
There are two dresses laying on the bed. A black sequined floor length satin sheath dress with an off the shoulder bodice covered in clear crystals. The other a red silk empire dress.
“You should wear the red one. It will go well with your fair skin tone.” Lorraine says looking over at her daughter who looks more like she is being tortured and not assisted for a fancy party.
“I was thinking the same thing.” She replies as she looks into the mirror and sees small red silk rosebuds pinned around her head in a bun with long thin ebony curls hanging down her back and one on each of her temples.
“You’ll wear the garnet necklace and earrings. You, my daughter, will look like a princess.” She says watching an Omega walk to the closet brings the jewelry set back with her and sets it down.
“I thought this party was to welcome Devon home.” She replies.
“Yes, it is. But equally important is to introduce you to society. Maybe an Alpha from an important and powerful pack will notice you.”
“I haven’t shifted yet, how will they sense me?” She asks.
“You are close enough to being of age, your wolf is already active in your mind, right.” Lorraine asks.
“Yes, I have spoken to her. Well, as far as I am concerned the more powerful the better.” She replies smiling as she thinks about the power she thinks it will extend to her.
“Someone is paying attention.” Lorraine says, looking at the girl.
“Thank you, Luna.” She replies with her head slightly bowed.
“I’ll be back to check on you, I need to check on your father and brother.”
Katarina walks about the busy dining room, clearing dishes, pocketing tips and delivering orders to tables. She notices it's a slow day for a weekend.
“Slow day huh?” A middle-aged man says as he lays a few bills down for payment. “Must be at the big party at that mansion.’ She replies by taking his cash to get change.
“When she returns he is standing, she offers it to him. “Keep it, honey. You earned it.” He says smiling warmly before leaving.
“Thank you.” She says before turning to the table to clear it and set it up for the next customer.
Katarina pushes a cart of dishes into the kitchen to the dishwasher and leaves it. The day chef looks over at her. “We’re closing up after lunch is done. After the dining room clears, do your closing tasks and you can go.” He says, looking at the seemingly exhausted teenager.
“Ok, Sam. She replies.
Katarina returns to the dining room, with only a few tables having customers at them. She starts on some of the jobs, while she waits for them to finish.
“Hi.” She hears and looks around. Seeing nobody there, she continues her work.
“I’m Jade.” The voice says. Kataraina looks around, and turns herself completely around and sees nobody talking to her.
“I’m in your head. I am your wolf.” The voice says, making Katarina drop an entire tray of silverware. Jumping back as she is startled. The last remaining customer looks over at her as she frantically picks each piece up. Her entire body trembles while she thinks she is losing her mind.
“You can talk to me with your thoughts. And no. You are not crazy, you are a werewolf.” Jade says.
“Wait. What? I’m a what? A mythological creature? What the hell is wrong with me?” She wonders.
Jade giggles, “You can’t not know.”
“Werewolves aren’t real. It’s just a story.”
“We are real. And you are one. Both of your parents are, and all of your family since the beginning of time have been. Has nobody told you?” Jade asks.
Katarina, finally on her feet, takes the tray to the kitchen to be rewashed. When she returns her last table is empty with the cash left on the table. She rings it up and separates the bill from her tip and closes the drawer.
After restocking and finishing her tasks she walks to the back of the kitchen and clocks out. “I am headed out, Sam.” She calls as she heads for the door.
