Gary drove like a man possessed. The engine screamed as he pushed the car far beyond the speed limit, barely slowing before skidding to a stop in front of the ruins. For a long moment, he couldn't move. The old house, the one that had once held all of Olivia's most precious memories, was gone. Nothing remained except blackened rubble. The smell of smoke and ash still lingered in the cold air. His knees nearly buckled. Without warning, Olivia's final expression flashed through his mind. Those eyes. Filled with pain. Filled with despair. As if she had already lost everything worth living for. A crushing ache exploded in his chest. It felt as though someone had swung a sledgehammer directly into his heart.
