Chapter 5: Eyes That Linger, Hearts That Stir The forest had long since quieted. What had once been a chaotic battlefield of instinct and pain was now calm, almost eerily so. Sunlight filtered through the canopy above, dappling the ground in soft gold and green. The scent of crushed herbs and fresh earth lingered in the air, mingling faintly with something warmer… something distinctly omega. Jiho sat beside the unconscious man, his back resting lightly against the trunk of a tree. His body ached from exhaustion, his energy nearly drained after everything he had done—but he refused to leave. Not yet. Not until he knew the alpha would be okay. His gaze drifted back to the man lying beside him. Now that the beast form had disappeared, Jiho could see him clearly. And— Jiho blinked. “…Wow.” The word slipped out before he could stop himself. The man—no, the alpha—was undeniably… attractive. Strong, defined features. Sharp jawline. Dark hair that fell slightly over his forehead in a way that looked almost unfairly perfect, even in this state. His broad shoulders and toned build were evident even beneath the torn fabric of his clothes. Jiho quickly looked away, his ears turning slightly red. “Why am I noticing that right now…” he muttered under his breath. This was not the time. He had just saved this guy’s life. That should be the focus. And yet… His eyes drifted back. “…Still, though…” Jiho shook his head, trying to clear his thoughts. “Focus.” --- A Stirring Presence A soft sound broke the silence. A shift. Jiho immediately straightened. The alpha’s fingers twitched. Then his brows furrowed slightly, as if waking from a deep, heavy dream. Jiho leaned forward instinctively. “Hey…?” No response. But his breathing changed—deeper now, more aware. And then— Slowly— The alpha’s eyes opened. Golden. Not glowing like before, not wild or feral—but still striking. Intense. Sharp. Alive. For a moment, they were unfocused. Then— They landed on Jiho. And stilled. --- First Impressions Time seemed to pause. Jiho froze under that gaze, suddenly very aware of how close he was sitting. “…Uh.” Great. Brilliant start. The alpha didn’t speak immediately. He just stared. His eyes moved slightly, taking in Jiho’s features—his soft expression, slightly messy hair, the faint flush still lingering on his cheeks, the way he was clearly trying to act composed but failing just a little. And something in the alpha’s expression shifted. “…Cute.” The word came out low. Rough from disuse. Jiho blinked. “…What?” The alpha didn’t repeat himself. Instead, he slowly pushed himself up, wincing slightly as his body protested. Jiho immediately moved closer. “Hey—don’t move too much, you were badly injured—” “I remember,” the alpha interrupted quietly. His voice was deep. Steady. Controlled. Very controlled. Jiho paused. “You… remember?” A brief silence followed. Then the alpha nodded once, his gaze lowering slightly. “Losing control… transforming… attacking anything in sight.” His hand clenched slightly. “…Pathetic.” Jiho frowned. “It’s not—” “It is.” The alpha looked back at him, eyes sharp again—but this time, there was no hostility. Just… clarity. “And yet,” he continued slowly, “I’m alive.” His gaze softened—just a fraction. “You did that.” Jiho shifted awkwardly. “I just… helped a little.” The alpha studied him for a moment longer. Then— “What’s your name?” “…Jiho.” “Jiho,” he repeated, as if testing the name. Then, after a brief pause— “Minho.” --- An Unexpected Connection The name settled between them. Jiho nodded slightly. “Minho.” For some reason, saying it felt… natural. Too natural. Minho leaned back slightly against the tree, still watching Jiho. And Jiho, despite himself, found it hard to look away. Up close like this, it was even worse. Minho wasn’t just “kind of attractive.” He was— Jiho swallowed slightly. “Dangerously good-looking” felt more accurate. And those eyes… Jiho quickly looked away again. Why was he reacting like this? It wasn’t like he’d never seen attractive people before. But this— This felt different. Stronger. More intense. The system’s voice suddenly echoed in his mind: [Notice: Alpha-Omega Proximity Detected] [Effect: Increased emotional and sensory awareness] Jiho froze. “…Wait.” Oh. Oh no. That explained a lot. He resisted the urge to bury his face in his hands. “Of course…” Minho tilted his head slightly. “Something wrong?” Jiho shook his head quickly. “No! Nothing. Totally fine.” Smooth. Very smooth. Minho didn’t look convinced. But he didn’t press. --- Minho’s Perspective From Minho’s side, things were… equally unusual. The moment he had woken up, the first thing he noticed wasn’t his injuries. It wasn’t the forest. It wasn’t even the lingering weakness in his body. It was Jiho. Small. Soft-looking. Bright eyes, even if they were currently avoiding his gaze. And that scent… Minho inhaled subtly. Warm. Comforting. Dangerously soothing. Omega. But not just any omega. There was something different about him. Something… stronger. Minho narrowed his eyes slightly. “You’re not normal,” he said suddenly. Jiho nearly choked. “Excuse me?!” Minho didn’t react to the outburst. He simply continued observing him. “Your scent. Your presence. Even the forest itself is reacting to you.” Jiho froze. “…You noticed that?” “I’d have to be blind not to.” Jiho didn’t know whether to feel impressed or concerned. Probably both. Minho leaned forward slightly despite his injuries, his gaze intense. “You calmed me down.” Not a question. A statement. Jiho hesitated. Then nodded slowly. “…Yeah.” Another pause. Minho exhaled quietly. “That shouldn’t be possible.” Jiho gave a small, uncertain smile. “Well… I guess I’m just special.” Minho stared at him for a moment. Then— A faint smirk appeared. “…Yeah.” Jiho blinked. Was that— Did he just— Was he smiling? --- A Shift in Atmosphere The tension between them changed. It wasn’t gone. But it was… different now. Softer. Curious. Minho shifted slightly again, testing his strength. Jiho immediately leaned closer. “Careful—” “I’m fine.” “You’re not fine, you were literally dying earlier.” “I wasn’t dying.” “You were definitely dying.” Minho raised an eyebrow. Jiho crossed his arms. “…Okay, maybe not dying-dying, but still. Close enough.” For a moment, Minho just looked at him. Then— A quiet chuckle escaped him. Jiho froze. “You’re… weird,” Minho said. Jiho frowned. “I just saved your life.” “Doesn’t make you less weird.” “…Rude.” But there was no real annoyance in his voice. And Minho noticed that. --- Something Begins Silence settled again—but this time, it wasn’t awkward. Jiho found himself glancing at Minho again. And again. And— Okay, he really needed to stop doing that. Minho, on the other hand, didn’t bother hiding it. He was openly watching Jiho now. Studying him. Memorizing him. “You keep staring,” Jiho said finally, unable to ignore it anymore. “You keep looking away.” “That’s because you keep staring.” “Then stop looking away.” “…That’s not how that works.” Minho tilted his head slightly. “Seems simple enough to me.” Jiho opened his mouth to respond— Then paused. Because somehow— Without realizing it— They were closer now. Much closer. Jiho’s heart skipped. Minho’s gaze dropped briefly to his lips. Then back to his eyes. And for a moment— Neither of them spoke. --- Interrupted… For Now The system chimed suddenly: [Warning: Presence detected nearby] Both of them froze. Minho’s expression changed instantly—sharp, alert. Jiho straightened. “…We’re not alone.” Minho pushed himself to his feet despite the lingering weakness. Jiho stood as well, his focus shifting immediately. The moment broke. But not completely. Because as they stood side by side— There was something new between them now. Unspoken. Unclear. But undeniable. Minho glanced at Jiho briefly. “…Stay close.” Jiho nodded. “…I will.” And as the forest stirred once more— Neither of them realized just how much this meeting would change everything.
