In the meeting room at City Hall, Bennett looked out over the chattering crowd that had gathered to discuss the potential use for the abandoned airfield. Ivy was sitting next to Piper, who was looking around in nervous excitement.
He couldn’t help noticing how nice Ivy looked in a coral-colored sundress. She and Carlotta had gone shopping, and he was glad to see that his wife had splurged on a new dress, although he suspected that her mother might have bought it for her. The shade brought a radiant glow to Ivy’s face, almost as if—he cut off that thought. Thinking about the loss of Jackie and their baby was always sobering, even though it had been years. And he and Ivy were beyond that phase of life anyway.
