Chapter 2

Jonathan Jacoby could not believe his senses as he stood there staring at her for a moment. Finally he shook her hand but held onto it for the moment. His panther began pacing inside of him as he recognized his Mate. Pushing the thought back he spoke to his panther Not now calm yourself something is not right a female should not be out alone. His panther growled at him Mate! “Miss Raleigh it is a pleasure to meet you. My previous assistant, who interviewed you, said you had excellent references.”          She pulled her hand back from his as she stared at him. Was he one of the ones who hunted her? Was this some kind of sick joke? If he was not one of them would he turn her over to them? Swallowing past the lump that had formed in her throat she could feel something rousing inside of her. She knew she was a were-panther but her panther had never stirred before. Oh no! Now is not the time for me to go into heat! Fear ran through Akira but she stood her ground. If she was going into heat then she would soon shift for the first time in her life. Finding her voice she finally answered her new boss “It is nice to meet you as well Mr. Jacoby. I look forward to working with you and please call me Akira.”        All Jonathan could think about was how beautiful her mismatched eyes were. He allowed his gaze to roam over her features taking in how beautiful his new assistant truly was. She smelled of lavender and chamomile which was soothing and enticing all at the same time. Jonathan was truly in trouble if his panther was right and Akira was indeed his Mate. “Is something wrong Mr. Jacoby?” Akira became a bit more uneasy as he looked over her.          Clearing his voice he shook his head as he replied “No there is nothing wrong Akira. And please call me Jon everyone does. Let me give you a brief tour of the office there is not much to see and I think you will love your office.” Blinking at him Akira could not believe what she was hearing “I…I get an office? Not a desk outside of your office?”         Chuckling as he began to lead the way through the office he continued to explain things to her. “Of course you get your own office right next to mine. I cannot have my assistant without the best of accommodations to work in. Your hours will be the typical 9-5 with some after hours work as well when I have a big dinner with a client or dinner party. You will need to make sure to have appropriate attire for those meetings.” They continued through the office space and he showed her where everything was. Akira could only hope that she would have enough time to get a couple of paychecks in before she was needed for one of his parties or dinners with a client as she did not have the attire required for such things.         Finally they arrived outside of his office and right across the way through a glass front was another office. “This is your office.” He opened the door and the view from the window was gorgeous she could see the ocean which made her smile.  Akira moved gracefully to the window to peer out at the ocean for a moment. Jon chuckled watching her and it caught her attention forcing her to look back at her new boss. “This office is beautiful and the view is simply gorgeous. Thank you for your generosity sir.”         “You are very welcome Akira and please just call me Jon. Your duties are listed on a cheat sheet in the top drawer. As long as you do as you are asked and get everything done in a timely fashion we will not have any trouble. Our first dinner party is Friday night at the Burkshire’s home. The affair is formal so make sure you are ready. I will pick you up at 7pm in the company limo.” Akira paled at the thought of having to figure out how to get a dress to wear to that dinner party. “Akira is everything alright?”         “Yes sir… I mean Jon.” Quickly she took in a breath and calmed herself down offering him a smile. “Just a little overwhelmed at the moment, nothing to worry about. Well I better get busy with my duties. Again thank you for your generosity.” Turning from him she moved quickly to grab the cheat sheet so she could begin working on her duties.          “Oh and one more thing Akira today you are having lunch with me so we can become better acquainted. Oh and the lunch is not optional. I will be by around one to come get you for lunch.” Jon turned and left the office before Akira could object. All she could do was stare at the place where he had been.         The morning seemed to fly by as she answered the phones for him as well as a plethora of other duties. Lucky for Akira one of her duties took her right down to the reception desk where she hoped to ask Sue if she might have an outfit she could borrow for Friday night. Once she had handed Sue all of the outgoing mail for Jon she stood there a moment waiting for Sue to get off of the phone. “Hey Akira, how is your first day going?” Sue greeted her with a bright smile.          “Sue I am in a bit of a bind. I am hoping you can help me. See I am supposed to escort Jon to some dinner party on Friday night. My problem is it is formal and I do not have the clothes for such a thing let alone the money to buy a new dress that would be suitable. So we appear to be about the same size and I know we just met but I was hoping I could borrow something from you for the evening on Friday.” The look on her face was one of pleading as she waited for a response.         “Sure I have a gown you can borrow for the affair on Friday. I’ll bring it in on Thursday for you. The shoes you are wearing now should go beautifully with it.” With a sigh of relief Akira thanked Sue and headed towards her office. However, unbeknownst to Akira her boss had heard the whole conversation. Stepping from the shadows of the hallway to the left Jon approached the receptionist. “Sue there is no need to worry about an outfit for Akira I got this covered. What do you know about my new assistant?”          “Not a whole lot to be honest Jon. I figured any woman desperate enough to ask a woman she barely knows to borrow an outfit must be in dire need of help so I was going to let her borrow one of my formals to help her out.” Sue gave a helpless shrug as she watched her boss for a moment. Jon thanked Sue and moseyed back down the hall deep in thought.         At exactly 1pm Jon stepped through the office door and looked at Akira who was busy typing up a case brief for an upcoming case he had. “Ready for lunch Akira?” his soft baritone voice drifted through the office. Unfortunately Akira had been so engrossed in her work she had not heard him come in so she nearly jumped right out of her skin when he spoke. “I’m sorry Akira I did not mean to scare you.”         Placing her hand over her heart she looked up to Jon and gave him a weak smile. “It’s okay Jon I should have been paying more attention. But I must decline lunch with you as there is much for me to do so I will be working through lunch.”         A scowl came across his features as he looked at her. “I know you did not bring lunch with you today and you will not be working through lunch on mundane things that can be done at anytime throughout the day. Now grab your purse and let’s go.” He was not taking no for an answer and that was all there was to it. Holding the door open to her office he waited for her.         With a sigh she grabbed her purse and headed out the door of her office. She went to say something but though better of it and simply followed him out of the office building. Akira could already tell that working for Jon was going to a problem for her since he seemed hell bent on getting to know her.
