Chapter 6

As they sat together the fine hairs on the back of her neck started to stand on end and she knew that something was about to happen. Her senses went onto high alert as she looked around the rather large dining area for the dinner. Unfortunately for her Jon and Cameron both noticed that something was wrong when they saw her fidgeting.         Softly Jon whispered in her ear, “Sweetheart what’s wrong?” He placed his hand on hers as he watched her. Even in her beautiful mismatched eyes he could something was bothering her. Akira looked like she was ready to bolt.         Turning to look at him she shook her head and pulled her hand back from his. “N..N..Nothing.” She managed to stutter and returned to looking at the dinner before. Not feeling rightly hungry at that moment she pretty much nibbled here and there then sent the plate back with the staff when they came around to collect the dishes from the main course. Desert was uneventful and Akira left her Chocolate Mousse untouched as she continued to fidget.         As the dinner concluded she rose from her seat excusing herself to the ladies room once more. Instead of heading to the ladies room she took that chance to try and figure out what was making those fine hairs on the back of her neck stand up. Within five minutes of her retreat from the dinner table Jon came and found her. “Akira what is going on? You hardly ate and fidgeted all the way through dinner. And I know it is not me that has you freaked out I can smell the fear on you.”         A startled gasp came from her when she heard his voice. Quickly she spun around with her hand over her heart. “Jon you scared me. Please do not do that again.” Taking in a few steadying breathes she continued, “There is nothing wrong. I am just not use to events like this.” Oh you bet he knew that was a lie but for now he let it go.         Cameron joined them in the foyer and looked between them both. “Akira we have not met yet. I am Cameron and we are partners in the firm and best friends.” He slapped Jon on the back with a smile. “But you can call me Cam everyone does. What is wrong we both know something is going on and we want to help you. That excuse of not being use to these types of affairs will not fly with me. Jon may let it slide but I will not.”         “Nothing is wrong. Jon please I want to go back to my room since this event is over.” Not waiting for either of them to say anything she grabbed her little clutch purse she brought with her and walked out the door. No sooner had she stepped out the door and a shot rang out echoing through the large home of the Burkshire’s. Cam and Jon both ran out the door to find Akira lying on the ground a small pool of blood had formed on the ground beneath her shoulder.         Before they could get a good look another shot rang out missing them completely. “Get an ambulance now!” Jon yelled into the foyer where people had begun to gather. “That shot was a warning shot everyone needs to get back.” Cam and Jon carefully pulled the unconscious Akira inside the door staying low as they went. Carefully Cam checked her wound and Jon started checking for anything else that may have happened. “She hit her head when she fell to the ground. She probably has some sort of concussion. We need to get her to a hospital. Get Noel on the phone Cam and tell her to meet us there. She is the only one I trust to touch Akira.”         Slowly Akira came around and stared up at Jon. She realized she had been shot and started to try and get up. “I have to get out of here.” She pushed at Jon’s hands while Cam was on the phone with Noel who agreed to rush into the hospital to take care of Akira. “Shhh you need to lay still sweetheart the ambulance is almost here. I can hear them in the distance.” Gently he tried to keep her from moving.        Frantically Akira shook her head and tried to get up. “No they found me I have to go. I have to get out of here. Now!” Once again she pushed him away from her and tried to get to her feet. Her stomach seemed to do a flip flop and the room titled sending her tumbling back to the ground. Jon pulled her into his arms and cradled her. “I will protect you sweetheart you must trust me to do this. Please stay still.”        Before the ambulance arrive the police came in and did a quick survey of the area to make sure the shooter was nowhere in sight. Once the area was cleared the ambulance crew was given the go ahead to come in and tend to Akira. While Jon tried to keep her calm Cam met the ambulance crew at the door. “She was shot in the shoulder. The wound is not a through and through. She also hit her head when she fell and was unconscious for several moments. You might have to sedate her to get her to go to the hospital. But before you give her anything contact Dr. Noel Simons at the hospital. She will give directions on what Akira can and cannot have.”          Nodding the crew quickly moved inside and knelt beside Akira. “Sir you have to move so we can get to her.” Shaking his head he refused to move. Cam came to his side and pulled him away. “Let them do their job Jon she will be alright. Though we need to find out what the hell is going on here.” Every time she cried out in pain Jon growled and tried to get to her but Cam stopped him.         As soon as they loaded her onto the gurney she was screaming she did not want to go and to let her up. Quickly Jon moved to her side and looked down at her. “Shhh you will be alright cara. Can you give her something to calm her down before she does more damage?” He looked at the paramedic pleading with him to do something to help her.         “Sir we cannot do anything until we hear from Dr. Simons. We can place that radio call once we get her into the ambulance. Now let us get her out of here so we can do something to help her. The police have cleared us to go there is no one in sight that means her harm.” They started to push her out the door when Jon spoke once again. “I am riding with her. If you fight me on this I promise I will bring the wrath of the court system down on you all! Cam meet me at the hospital. Bring the limo.”         Cam did not answer just ran out of the Burkshire’s home to get the limo. As for Jon he kept a hold of her hand until they loaded her into the ambulance then he climbed in behind her taking the opposite side that the paramedic took. “Shhh cara please calm yourself. I just found you please stay with me.” Tears glimmered in his eyes as he watched her struggle to get free. Not two minutes later the paramedic pushed something through the IV that made her settle down a bit but not enough to knock her out.         “Jon I need to go. Please.” Akira clutched his arm pulling on him as best she could. “Cara please lay back let them take care of you. I promise you are safe. Trust me please? I promise to take care of you.” The medicine that had been administered finally took effect and the ambulance seemed to spin around her. Jon could see the medicine take effect as he watched her eyes. A few minutes later they arrived at the hospital. Jon got out first and took her hand once more when the crew pulled her out of the ambulance.         Noel met them at the door barking orders to those around her. “Sorry Jon you have to wait out here. I need to get that bullet out of her now. I will come and get you once we have gotten her stabilized and the bullet out.” About that time Cam came through the doors and pulled Jon back. “Let them tend to her Jon. I know this hard for you. Come on we’ll get you a cup of coffee after we fill out her papers. Do you know who her nearest relative is?”         Shaking his head as he spoke, “No she said that she did not have any family on her application and during her interview. I will pay for her medical bills.” Jon grabbed the paperwork from the intake nurse and filled it out to the best of his knowledge then returned it. While Jon filled out the paperwork Cam went and grabbed a couple of cups of coffee knowing his best friend would refuse to leave the waiting room. “Come on let’s go sit down and wait for Noel to come out ok?”          Cam felt bad for his best friend and had no clue how to make him settle down. For now all he could do was sit there with him and keep him company and wait for word from Noel. Silently the two sat there in the waiting room sipping on some coffee.
