It was late already, and I couldn't drop off my things at my place. I decided to check into the office first to obtain permission after the Monday morning board meeting as Mr. Kendrick's secretary, Mr. Kendrick, the CEO of the Big-K enterprise. I can't be caught off guard; I need to be composed. My dress selection that morning was for the first time off. I chose to wear a purple dress, and in a hurry, I picked a red shoe to make the dressing complete, as that was the only idea of perfect wear in my head all in a hurry, instead of the usual corporate wear of black and white for Mondays.
Upon entering, all eyes and attention grew increasingly towards my body as I saw the words spelt out on their faces, as it was obviously written, “she got nerves showing up this way, time, and manner.”.
“Good morning, good morning. Good morning…”
I made way as I rushed in, greeting everyone who cared to listen or respond. Could it be my clothes or something else? Why are they all keeping a hard face towards me? With the looks on their stiff, rolling faces, I could tell something was definitely wrong but had no time to ask what it was.
I pushed the door to the boardroom open, and the entire room was filled to its peak, and someone else was on my seat. This shocked me up completely, as I was left perplexed at first, in my head with several questions already, but who speaks in a board meeting when not asked to do so?
“Finally hear to claim your roses for a job well done?”
Mr. Kendrick asked, breaking the silence. His deep audible voice needs no introduction, as he was always clearly heard even without any microphone. His stunning looks made me gush each time he kissed me, but with his frowning face and squeezed fist, I could tell that wasn't a compliment I should smile at.
"No, sir, I can explain. I had a long argument with my soon-to-be mother-in-law, and afterwards I was in a hurry and had to wear this real quick to meet up so it won't happen again.”
That was the only defence to what I was wearing I could give and also for being late. Mr. Kendrick had before thrown a few approaches towards me in an attempt to ask me out, but I turned them all down, and now I had to have his bad side as a result of my flaws.
“What is our business with your little family matter?”
He said as he threw his hands to the screen,
“That's what I'm talking about.”
My jaw dropped, letting go of everything I had in my hands as I fuelled my own heart with weakness, sticking it off deeply. For the second time, I felt dead but alive in a single day.
“This can't be happening.”
I mumbled as I took two steps backwards to look at the screen better, this time looking with my jaw dropped and eyes open from ear to ear, like someone seeing those images for the first time.
“Take a look at the headline.”
Kendrick continued as he grew red in face, clinging his left hands to the edge of the desk like it was his only support from his dead feet.
“Engaged Big-K employee of the year in an affair with a mystery man”
I mumbled out a little louder.
"Yes, that's it, and thank you; we're in the news again, and this time your good works have made that possible. You should be clapping for yourself.”
I remembered during my employee of the year speech that I assured I would make sure the company had a big, major headline that would draw investors to it, but this wasn't how I intended to brighten up the company and leave a legacy.
“I'm afraid your services, as you can see, are no longer needed.”
He sat down gently as he picked up his file and dropped it in front of my desk, where my office rival Cynthia was sitting.
"Please, I can fix this, sir. Please let me fix it; I promise it's not what it looks like.”
I fell to my knees as tears ran down my jaws.
This was the only job I had to survive while I made the right choice of husband and secured my inheritance. But now that it's all gone, where do I start from? Whom do I run to? My life is now a mess.
“Security.”
Mr. Kendrick shouted one last time. I parked all I had on the floor and made my way out of the building.
I received a guard of honor as everyone came out to look at the humiliated employee of the year. To some, it confirmed that I told you so, which they would dance to later, as their view of me was already that I was having an affair with the CEO, and seeing I now sleep around is the perfect icing to confirm my being loose.
I made my way to the entrance only for a familiar voice to call me back.
“Katie,”
I turned to the charming and beautiful voice from behind me; it was Sophie Philips, my best friend and, in fact, the one who helped me get this job I got fired already from. We grew up together, and she was the only one I counted as family outside Stephen, but now it's just her in my world.
“I know it's hard for you, but please don't do anything stupid to yourself and give me a call once you get home, as I would call to check up on you and find out how you're doing, okay?”
Touching my shoulder, she turned me and filled every space in front of me with her arms wrapped around my back and shoulder simultaneously. She squeezed tight, and we both let out a big breath of relief, breaking the hold she ran back in.
“I have to return to the meeting; I love you.”
She threw kisses as she rushed back inside in order not to be punished.
“Oh my God! I had to park across the street, where I even put the keys scrambling my bag open. I put my hands inside trying to find my keys, and with my head heavily vested in the bag, I walked, crossing over the road to where I parked.
Tires frictional against the road brought me back to consciousness only to lose it momentarily right in my collision with the car. I could feel my body for a second but not anymore, and my eyes closed. A light flashed before me, and my whole head grew big as I couldn't feel myself.
“What just happened?”
I struggled.
