Anniversary turns sour: He's a cheat
"Mr. Richard Bryce is here to see you."
Eunice poked her head through the barely opened office door. Jessy, who was supposed to have closed hours ago, worried that Arthur who was supposed to come pick her up hadn't shown up or replied to her texts. She didn't even look up.
"No. I'm tired. That'll be all for today."
She spoke while sluggishly packing her things into her bag.
"Are you alright, sweetheart?" Eunice asked, genuine concern filling her eyes, the slight frown making her wrinkles more obvious.
She had been the company secretary for twenty-five years and had watched Jessy grow from a child running through the office halls into the woman now sitting behind the executive desk.
"Yes," Jessy replied quietly, avoiding her gaze as she continued stuffing documents into her bag.
Eunice studied her for a moment before nodding.
"It's today, isn't it?”
Jessy paused, she stretched till she could hear her bones creak.
“Yes.” She finally responded.
“You should take a leave, we can take care of things for the meantime, fix your marriage.. It should be as important as your work, I don't know how to say this right Jessy.” Eunice stopped and waited for a reaction but didn't get any.
“My marriage is fine.” She said, as she continued her packing.
“He had been coming here for three consecutive years on this day, honey. You never went with him; work always prevented you.
“Yes, the company was running down then, I couldn't. Besides, he hasn't picked up my calls or replied to my texts.”
“If you were in his shoes, would you?” She turned and left, closing the door gently behind her.
Jessy sighed, her eyes tired as she fought to stay awake. Eunice was right; she needed rest, perhaps a vacation. Her marriage was deteriorating, and it was a good chance to repair it before it was too late.
A few minutes later, Jessy grabbed her bag and headed for the exit.
The moment she opened the door, he was still there. Seated in the waiting area as though he had all the time in the world.
Jessy turned to hug Eunice first and then whispered into her ears.
“We're going on a vacation, I'd need lists of countries we can visit.”
Eunice only smiled.
Richard Bryce rose to his feet.
"Hello, Mrs. Lancaster." He stepped toward her and extended his hand.
Jessy's eyes dropped briefly to it.
She made no move to take it. Talking to him could divert her focus and give her more tasks. She was determined.
He dropped his hand.
“Yes, Mr Bryce? I'm in a hurry right now, can we skip to tomorrow morning?” She said calmly, without waiting.
She stopped at the elevator while he pressed the buttons for her.
“Thank you.” She smiled.
.
Jessy sat quietly in the back seat of the car, staring blankly through the window, motionless and lost in her thoughts.
She was going home to Arthur, despite the fact that Arthur was supposed to come to her and then take her out but for three consecutive years, she didn't go with him, because of “work.” her usual excuse.
Now that she's trying to fix everything, she had no idea what awaited her there.
Arthur had endured enough already. That was obvious.
Still, she was strangely relieved that everything was finally going to get a closure.
Maybe now they could fix it and start over, back to when they were new lovers.
Their marriage hadn't fallen apart because of one person alone. Arthur also had his share of the blame too.
The car turned into their neighborhood and rolled toward the familiar white house standing behind a neatly fenced compound.
Like every other home in the estate, it was elegant, expensive, and almost identical to its neighbors.
From the outside, it looked like the home of a happy family.
The car came to a stop and Jessy stepped out and gave the driver a small wave before making her way briskly toward the entrance.
She pushed open the door and stopped immediately.
The living room was in chaos.
Furniture had been knocked out of place. Broken glass littered the floor.
A cold wave of fear swept through her. Something had happened in the room.
.
A message from Arthur flashed across her screen.
“I'm at the homie's house. Wait at the office. I'm coming to pick you.”
A cold shiver raced down Jessy's spine. If Arthur wasn't home… Then who had torn the house apart?
She hurried back outside and dialed 911, her voice trembling, her fingers shaky.
"911, what's your emergency?" The female voice came in.
"I think someone broke into my house."
"Where are you now, ma'am? Are you in immediate danger?"
"I'm outside. Trivia Estate, House 57."
"Officers are on the way. Please stay away from the house until they arrive."
"Okay." She ended the call and leaned against the front fence, trying to steady her breathing.
Her fingers quickly typed a reply to Arthur.
“I'm at home. Someone broke into the house. The police are on their way.”
She slipped her phone back into her bag. Within minutes, two patrol cars pulled into the driveway.
"Mrs. Lancaster?" one of the officers called.
Jessy recognized him immediately, It was Barry Potus. One of Arthur's closest friends. The one she never liked.
"Did you see anyone?" Barry asked.
"No. The living room is completely trashed, and Arthur isn't here."
Barry nodded,
"He could've made the mess himself before leaving... don't you think?"
Jessy frowned, he was doubting her already. Before she could answer, the second officer shot Barry an irritated look.
"Man, let's clear the house first."
Barry nodded and reluctantly headed inside.
Ignoring the instruction to stay outside, Jessy followed several steps behind.
Barry's strange question lingered in her mind.
He knew something. She could sense it.
The officers moved carefully through the silent house, checking each room.
As they drew closer to the bedroom, they heard them: sharp, rhythmic sounds of skin slapping against skin, mixed with low, guttural grunts.
“Go back!” Barry whispered aggressively but it was too late. She wouldn't.
The other cop told her to stay behind him. Barry pushed the door open and went back out immediately. Leaving Jessy to see a nightmare she never thought she could see. What she saw stopped her cold.
It was the most devastating scene of her life.
Her mother, Agnes, was on all fours on the bed, completely naked. Arthur stood behind her, gripping her hips with bruising force as he thrust into her with raw, merciless aggression. His powerful body slammed forward, each deep stroke punctuated by the sharp crack of his hand slapping her ass. Agnes’s back arched, her moans muffled against the cushion as her body jolted with every brutal impact.
Jessica stood frozen, legs trembling beneath her. The wet, obscene clap-clap-clap of skin against skin echoed in the quiet dawn air. The world tilted.
Agnes and Arthur are still oblivious of the new person in the room. The other cop stood beside Jessy, confused and speechless.
Suddenly, Jessy grabbed his side pistol and shot it.
