FIRST TASK

749 Words
Kamryn arrived at The Millers International early the next morning, she was determined to make a good impression. She had spent the previous evening reviewing the company handbook, memorizing names of key staff, emotionally and mentally preparing herself for the busy day ahead. Today, she wasn’t just starting a job—she was proving that Mr Miller had made the right decision hiring her. As she walked through the familiar glass doors, the receptionist greeted her with a polite smile. “Good morning, Miss Taylor. Mr. Miller is expecting you.” She nodded and took the elevator to the top floor. The moment the doors opened, she spotted Mr Miller immediately, standing by the windows as usual, his phone in hand. His sharp suit clung perfectly to his tall frame, and his presence had a way of making the room feel smaller, more tense. “Good morning, Miss Taylor,” he said without looking up. “You’re early. I like that.” “Good morning, sir,” she replied, trying to keep her voice steady. “Follow me. We’ll start your first task immediately.” He led her through the office corridors to her office, where she'll be working. Inside, the air smelled faintly of coffee and polished wood. On the table lay a neat stack of folders, documents, and a laptop. “Your first task,” Jackson said, finally looking at her with a scrutinizing gaze, “is to prepare a detailed report on our international partners, including their financial standings, recent projects, and potential risks. I want it on my desk by the end of the day. You understand the importance of accuracy right?” “Yes, sir. I’ll make sure it’s precise and thorough,” Kamryn answered, already feeling her heart rate quicken. Jackson didn’t reply immediately. Instead, he observed her as she opened the laptop, her fingers flying over the keys as she started organizing the data. Occasionally, he leaned against the window frame, scrolling through his phone. Hours passed in a blur of research, typing, and double-checking facts. Kamryn barely noticed the time until Jackson’s assistant knocked softly and announced, “Lunch is ready.” “Dont stop, No lunch break for you” Jackson said sharply. “Finish the report first. Eat after.” Kamryn swallowed her frustration. She had expected long hours, but his intensity was on another level. Still, she worked harder, fueled by determination. By late afternoon, the report was complete. Kamryn printed it, organized it neatly in a folder, and walked into Jackson Miller’s office, trying to appear calm and composed. “Here it is, sir,” she said, placing the folder on his desk. Jackson glanced at it briefly, flipping through a few pages. “Impressive. Accurate. Detailed.” His voice was flat, but the small nod he gave her felt like a rare acknowledgment. “Thank you, sir,” she replied, letting a quiet sense of pride wash over her. “You’ll get used to the pace here,” he said, returning to his work. “Mistakes cost money and reputations. I expect perfection, or close to it. Can you handle that?” Kamryn met his gaze directly. “I can handle it, sir. I want to handle it.” He didn’t respond verbally this time, but the brief lift of his eyebrows told her he had heard her. As she left the office, she realized something: Jackson Miller was a demanding, intimidating boss, but he was also precise, driven, and respected. If she wanted to survive—and thrive—she would need to match his intensity. And strangely, the thought of rising to his level made her pulse race with excitement rather than fear. Later that evening, as she sat in her small apartment, Kamryn couldn’t help but replay the day in her mind. Every challenge, every tension-filled moment with Mr Miller, every expectation placed upon her—it all felt like stepping onto a battlefield she was ready to conquer. But deep down, she knew this was only the beginning. Jackson Miller wasn’t just testing her skills; he was testing her resilience, her determination, and maybe even her limits. She knew she could handle it but sometimes a bit of doubt and uncertainty would crawl into her thoughts but she shut the thoughts in her head. This was something she had wanted since, a well paying job with opportunities like this and she didn't want to loose it. Kamryn was determined not to fail.
