Bygone: Prologue
Endlessly before me a pure and desolate darkness stretches beyond my vision. Drifting in an endless sea I am left with nowhere else but to look forward. I blink my eyes and lights begin to shimmer past me. Bubbles drifting towards the surface of the inky void. Squinting in order to get a better look I see faint images of happy times and sad times.
“Are they memories?” I wonder to myself.
Realization sparks. I find myself unable to recall anything about myself, who am I has now joined with the question of WHERE am I?
Before I could even perceive anything more of the darkness, I blink and find myself standing instead on top of a boundless ocean of dark water, the only light provided is by a sun locked in permanent eclipse.
Looking back to the water below, I see the twinkles that had once brushed past me, only to watch them being eaten by shadows darting about beneath the water's surface.
“Where... Am I?” I can't help but wonder to myself once more.
Standing straight once more I can't help but begin to walk. Where I am walking to like all else before me. A Mystery.
With each step I take, the sound of a clock plays. Tick. Tock. Tick. Tock.
The world around me sprouts as land rises to the surface of the dark waters. Trees grow, flowers bloom, animals are born and die before my eyes as if time were on fast forward.
Whispers of wind begin to blow. Carrying voices from the distance, I can't seem to help but to turn my attention there. A new course where I am not wondering aimlessly.
Drawing closer to the voices the sounds of the clock begin to fade, but I am met with an increasing hum and buzz. Each step forward my head begins to throb.
“Closer.... I need to hear their words...” I think to myself as I push myself forward
Drawing ever closer to the source of the voices I see them, their figures are blurry, but I can't make out what they are saying, their voices are but still distant whispers.
Arriving at where the figures once stood, there is only emptiness once more. Surrounded by a vast empty ocean as I had once been at the beginning.
The Buzzing and the throbbing in my head begin to fade before the sound of feathers fluttering in a frenzy sound behind me.
Turning to face the sound I am met face to face with a pure black silhouette. With a fright I stumble backwards and fall to my rear before looking back where the figure was once before.
Nothing. Nothing was standing there... “What was that?” I wonder to myself before chills begin to shoot through my entire body.
I shoot to my feet and turn once more, and the figure was standing right behind where I had just sat.
“What... Are you?” I manage to ask through frightened breath.
The shadow only tilts its head. Pointing towards itself before fluttering back into my face.
A voice of twisted melody ran through my mind. “Ouy Ma I” before the shadow vanished leaving behind naught but a giggle.
In a panic I twist and turn to see where the shadow may have gone, only to be greeted once more with absolute nothingness.
Unease sets in my body as I begin to walk, almost run, away from where I had just been.
The clock begins to drum louder before. Each of my steps now cause the water below to rumble and distort.
Waves crash, Land grows. Trees Sprout. Flowers Bloom. All to be washed away once more. Empires grow, Empires vanish. Man Crawls. Man Walks. Man fades into history.
“I Don't understand. WHERE AM I!?” I scream frantically into the void before falling to my rear once more.
Hugging my legs as I sit on the surface of the water below me I rock back and forth. Strain from the weird world and not even knowing who I am, are finally wearing me down. Finally I decide to just give up and lay back on the water's surface.
Laying back my eyes blink a few times before I see something drifting in the air far above. A cube. Shimmering like a rainbow. Drifting around in the air above me. Once more I blink only to find myself back in the darkness of the depths.
The water is colder than ice and yet this time I feel warmth... As if someone were embracing me from behind...
Before I could even muster up the energy to even try to turn my head a calming voice drifted in through my ears. “Worry not child of the world. With this you are Free, But remember. We will always be watching.” without question. My eyes shut once more and I drifted to sleep.
