3. First Week

Nina’s POV. Asher and Isaac dropped us at the front of the school at seven thirty this morning. We have been in the main office picking out our classes since then. It's been thirty minutes and we finally got our schedule for the classes we picked out. Ryan: Hey, I just got to school. Are you here yet? I received a text from Ryan. Me: Yeah, just at the main office, getting my schedule. Two minutes later, the door opened and in walked Ryan. There was another guy with Ryan that almost looked like him. “Hey Nina, this is my cousin Liam,” he said as he stood in front of me and Nevins. “Hi, this is my brother Nevins. Nevins, this is Ryan, the guy I met at the café yesterday”, I said, introducing my brother. “Hey, you in grade 12?” My brother asked Liam. “Yeah man, let us see your classes” he said to Nevins, and my brother handed over his schedule. “Cool, we have sports, history and science together. Come, I’ll introduce you to my friends”, Liam said, and my brother waved me goodbye to follow Liam out of the office. “So, mind if I see what classes we might have together?” Ryan said as he stood next to me to look at my schedule. “We are in the same Math’s, English, History, science and sports classes” he said, almost sounding a little too happy. I followed him to the two-morning classes we had together, which were English and then History. The bell rang indicating lunch and we both walked to the cafeteria. Ryan and I grabbed some food, and then I followed him to a table that only had boys sitting. “Hey, boys, so this is Nina”, Ryan said to the boys. “She is new to town and she prefers the company of men”, he said to the boys. “I have three brothers so…” I quickly said, hoping none of them got the wrong idea. “Hi,” they all said at the same time. “This is Will, James, Logan and Chris,” he said, pointing to each of them. “There is also Sam who you already met, he’s probably still heading over from his class. There is also Mateo, who is not here today. He’s kind of like the leader of the group. But he’ll be back at school next week”, Ryan finished. “Oh, well it's nice to meet you all” I said as I took a seat in between Chris and Ryan. “So are you into girls or something?” Chris asked, looking at me as I sat down. “No, no, no..... I'm totally into boys. I mean men, I’m into men” I said, feeling awkward about his question. They all gave a quick laugh and then started talking about the classes they had for the rest of the day. “Hey guys! Oh hey, Nina, I see you didn’t get lost this time and accidentally wandered into the boys' toilet”, Sam said, as he took a seat across from me. I felt embarrassed by the reminder of yesterday's events. The boys looked at me weird so Ryan and Sam quickly filled them in. “So, Sally will be here tomorrow. She has been heartbroken all spring break and still is. You know from her break up with her girlfriend who found uhhhh… someone else”, Sam said, sounding like he didn’t know how to say the ‘someone else’ part. “Who’s sally?” I asked. “Oh, she’s my twin sister. She is the only girl that hangs out with us. But now we have you, so I guess that makes two girls in the group. Oh and she’s into girls just to clear that up”. Sam answered the question that I asked along with the one that I asked myself to. “Oh cool,” I said, “So you guys are a group of eight?” I asked. “Well, nine now, since we are including you,” Ryan said. We continued to talk for a bit and I got to know the boys a bit better. After lunch, we all went our separate ways to our classes. I had music class to end the day, which James, Logan and Chris were also in. They seemed happy to have a fourth person in their class that was now a part of their friends' group. Because one of them would always be left out in a two-person project or paired with someone they didn’t know. The day went by quickly and before we knew it, it was the end of the day. Nevins and I said goodbye to our friends while waiting in the parking lot. Not long after, Isaac came and picked us up. We got home to the house smelling like roast chicken. “So how was everyone’s day?” Asher asked as we sat down to have our dinner. “Well, mine was great. Thanks to that friend of Nina’s from the café. I’ve made a few great people”, Nevins said with a smile. “Well, I had a great day too, I made a lot of friends and I liked all my classes”, I said before stuffing my face with a chicken drumstick. “I found work as a mechanic today. I’ll be completing a certificate while getting paid”, Isaac said with a smile. “How about you?” I said, looking at Asher. “I'll be doing laboring work. It’s a Monday to Sunday full-time job. So you all might not see me around home on the weekends” he said. After finishing our dinner, we all cleaned up and went to bed. . . . . The next day, I and Nevins got to school and we went straight to our friends. “Hey Nina”, Ryan said, waving me over to the group. “So Nina, this is Sally. Sally, this is the girl from the café we told you about”, Sam said, while introducing his sister to me. “Hey” Sally said, laughing, while I was once again reminded of the incident at the café. “Thank goodness! I thought I would forever be the only girl in the group”, she said, looking so excited and happy. “So we have most of the same classes together. Except for Music and Dance. Before you ask, Yes! I had a look at your schedule. So we are going to be sitting next to each other in every class we have together,” she said as she put her arms around my shoulder and led me to our home room. “Oh, by the way, I’m into girls. But I’m pretty sure the boys already mentioned that”, She said as we sat down at the table and I nodded my head to confirm what she said. “I like you already” I said with a smile and she seemed happy at my comment. “Why is that? I’ve only known you for a few minutes” she said in a sarcastic tone. “Well, you talk a lot. That makes you my type of person” I said, being totally honest, and she seemed to like what I said. “Well, not many people like that. I talk a lot. So you are officially my new favourite person” she said just before the bell rang to let us go to our first class of the day. We had History first, Sally sat next to me and Ryan sat behind us. “When Mateo gets back next week, I can finally have someone to sit next to,” Ryan said, feeling frustrated that Sally stole his seat next to him. The days went by quickly and before we knew it, it was Friday. I got to know everyone in our group and became close to them. There is just Mateo to meet on Monday. I was at home in the lounge room just going through Netflix. It was twenty minutes and I couldn’t decide what to watch. I heard my phone go off, indicating that I had received a message. Ryan: Hey, anything planned for the weekend? I got a message from Ryan. Me: I’ve got nothing planned this weekend. But if you want, you and the crew can come chill at my place. My older brother will be working at the weekend. So I’ll just be me, Nevins and my other brother. I’m sure my brother will be fine with it too. Ryan: Sure! I’ll include you in the group message so everyone knows. Me: Great! I’ll text my address in the group message. I finished the text, then got up and headed to my room.
