Prologue
"Shisune! Look what I found!" A small boy with mussed brown hair and green eyes held up an ice blue flower to another boy.
"Wow! It's so pretty!" The other boy, shorter than the first, took the flower.
"It's for you!"
"Really?! Thank you!" The two boys hugged and frolicked until the sun sank low into the horizon.
"...Shisune?"
"Yes?"
"Can I show you something before I go?"
"Of course!"
"Will you hate me?"
"No! Why would I?" The brown-haired boy fidgeted nervously.
"Well... I'm not human." The shorter boy tilted his head in bewilderment.
"What do you mean? You look human to me."
"This... is what I mean," the smaller boy gasped when the brown-haired boy morphed into a tiny wolf pup.
"You look so cute! And you're so fluffy too!" The smaller boy squealed and stroked the overjoyed pup. The pup turned back into a boy.
"Can we be together forever?"
"Yea!"
"Promise?" The brown-haired boy held out his pinky.
"Promise!" The two boys hooked pinkies and hugged for the last time.
"Let's get married when we're older!"
"Un!" The smaller boy nodded. They eventually parted and walked home.
That brown-haired boy never came back.
~
I had that blasted dream again. Sometimes I wonder why that boy never came back or why I can't remember his name.
All I remember was going back to the meadow in the forest full of hope and going back home at sunset full of despair. Weird thing is, my parents never remembered me hanging out with the boy.
When I was young, people commented on my "vivid imagination". For I saw small people or animals that didn't exist. I'd bring home normal-looking flowers and claim they were some mystical plants that could heal illnesses.
Now I get comments on how I have no imagination at all. My relatives love to joke about how I used up all my imagination when I was younger. I care little for unreal things anymore; I have more important things to do.
Now I'm sixteen and running my business. Of course, this WAS a family business until my parents had a fight and lost the passion for it. They have their separate jobs and I run the place myself.
"Excuse me, could you please help me?" An elderly lady pointed to a shelf just out of her reach.
"Of course, what do you need?"
"The Eucalyptus oil." I stretched up on my tiptoes and grabbed it.
"Here you go."
"Thank you," the lady bowed and perused around some more. I laid my head down on the counter and sighed. The business had been slow these past few weeks. If it doesn't go up, I won't be able to keep the shop open.
"What do I do?" I got up and busied myself with organizing the neat shelves, pausing to ring up the elderly lady's order.
"Thank you! Please come again!" I bid the lady goodbye. The moment she left, I secured the shop. It was now 6 in the afternoon and I had a mass of homework growing on my desk.
I groaned and sat down. "I seriously need a break. Maybe I'll go on a hike this weekend," I muttered to myself. A long hike in Aokigahara sounded nice. It wasn't that far away, and I knew a few trails by heart.
With something to look forward to for the first time in a while, I worked on my homework.
