With tears in my eyes, I mixed the last of the ingredients. “It’s ready.” My husband stopped his pacing and joined me. We would have to say the words together for the spell to work and get our daughter to drink the potion. She, of course, wouldn't be aware of it. Wrapping his arms around me, he pulled me to his chest. “I know you disagree with this, and you were looking forward to teaching our daughter as your mother taught you. But if the wolves find out she is a witch, who knows what they will do to her. Hell, the one has already got her convinced he loves her.” I nodded, wiping the tears from my eyes. “I know. I wish we didn’t have to strip her of her gifts before she even knows she has them.” Squeezing me tightly, he pressed his lips to my temple. “I know, love. But we have to hope it works, and it’s not too late.” Nodding, I pulled away. “Then let's get this over with before she wakes up. I still have to get this mixed in with her breakfast.” Nodding, he took my hand, and together we recited the words together. “Strip this witch of her powers, remove the gifts sent to her from the goddess herself, remove the power from her veins, hide it from the world, grant her a human life from now until the end of time.” With the spell said, I mixed the potion into my daughter’s breakfast, ensuring she will ingest it before leaving for school. I had dreamed all her life we would get to share in the bond that came with her discovering her true self. Learning her powers. We had decided when she was born that we would wait to tell her of her heritage until the day she received her powers. We wished for her to have a normal childhood as best as possible. Growing up as a witch came with so many dangers, especially with the wolves growing in numbers around us. There were two packs so close that us living here was risky enough. Every time we used our powers, we risked them sensing us and finding us. We chose the town simply because the wolves never seemed to interact with anyone in the town. Then some nosy human got wind that there were children in the wolf’s compound and insisted on the well-being of the children to be looked at. After going back and forth with the humans, the wolves decided to oblige them by sending their pups to the human’s school. Unfortunately for us, we had raised our daughter not to hate anyone, and she soon grew attached to one of them. We did everything we could to keep the two apart, but she found a way to see him still no matter what we did. Plastering a smile on my face, I walked the plate over to the table, setting it down. “JUNE, LET’S GO YOUR BREAKFAST IS GETTING COLD.”  In seconds she was dashing into the room. “I don’t have time. I need to meet a friend before school to go over some homework.” I shook my head. “Not until you have eaten at least half of what is on your plate.” She shook her head, “Mom, I don’t have time.” Sighing, I placed my hands on my hips. “You do have time. Now sit.” Rolling her eyes, she sat down with a huff. I stood and watched as she ate big bites of the eggs and toast I had placed on her plate. With the last bite, she stood and ran out of the house. I shook my head, taking her plate with me back into the kitchen. Guilt seeping in with the knowledge that she was no longer going to ever get to experience the excitement of gaining her powers. I wonder what her gift would have been. Tears fell from my eyes as the realization that I would never know what her powers would have been sunk in. Would she have been given the power to move objects with her mind like me? Or manipulate water like her father. Then, of course, there were other things like manipulating fire, wind, the earth, reading minds, the ability to heal people with her hands, and many other things. She would never get the opportunity to find out. All because we cast a spell on her in the name of protecting her from the wolves that seemed to be highly interested in her. They had to believe she was human. We couldn’t let our daughter be the one to fulfill the privacy and allow the hybrid into this world.  June was upset the moment she walked into the house. I felt it. Something happened. Walking into the room, she sat in one of the chairs not far from where her father and I sat reading. “Mom, Dad, I need to talk to you about something.” The both of us set our books aside and looked at her. Something was wrong. I could see it all over her face. She looked as though she had been crying for hours. “I am not sure how to say it, really. So I am just going to say it. I am pregnant.” My hand flew to my mouth. How could this happen? She was only a child. We had only just taken the precaution of stripping her powers this morning. How could this happen? “Who is the father?” Pulling my attention from my daughter, I looked to my husband, who sounded so calm. But one look, and I could tell he was anything but calm. June’s eyes fell to the floor. “Jack.” That was all he needed to hear, and he was upon his feet. “You will get rid of this child instantly. I will not allow you to have this child. Do you hear me, young lady? I will not allow my only daughter to birth the offspring of one of those…...ingrates.” Tears welled in my eyes. I hated the idea of forcing her to rid herself of her own child, but we couldn’t allow this child to be born. How could this happen? “I can’t believe you would do something so foolish. Did we not raise you to be a proper lady? How could you do something like this?” He began his pacing as he continued to yell for a while longer. After a long time, he stopped his yelling and pacing, looking down at our daughter, who sat in her seat, tears falling from her eyes. “Go change out of your school clothes now. When you are done, we will go and have this abomination removed from the world.” I watched as my little girl stood from her chair and headed to her room with tears rolling down my face. I watched as she closed the door behind her. I watched as my husband paced back and forth in front of me as he fumed with anger. “How could this even happen? Why did she have to go and get herself seduced by one of them? Do you know what this means?” I didn’t bother answering his questions. I knew he didn’t really care for answers.  He continued to fume for the next twenty minutes while I cried for my daughter. Not only had we taken her powers from her, even if she didn’t know it, but we would have to take this child from her. There was no way we could allow it to be born. At the twenty-minute mark, we realized she seemed to be taking an awfully long time to change. Standing from my spot, I walked over to her room only to find it empty. She had gone out the window. She ran away, taking her child with her. It didn’t take long to find where she ran off to. Convincing her to come home was a whole other story. She refused to get rid of the baby growing in her belly. We tried several spells to remove the child, and none of them worked. We were forced to watch from afar. Once the child was born, it was hard to get near it. There was no way we would be able to get close enough to even touch the child. As the years went on, we changed our approach and hoped we could keep the child away from any wolves. To our relief, the father wasn’t in the picture, which told us June had no idea what he was. With any luck, we prayed the child would not take after her father. June had even moved the child farther away from the packs that lived in the area, ensuring she didn’t attend the same school as the mutts. This gave us hope that she would not follow in her mother’s footsteps and the prophecy would not come true. But it didn’t matter what all we did. There was no stopping it. The pack found out about the child and took her in. We did the only thing we could think of. The pack still thought we were human, so we used the human system in hopes of working it to our advantage. But we failed. The most we were able to get was time with the child alone. We used that time to try and do to her what we had done for her mother. We tried to strip her of any powers she may gain. We also attempted to suppress her wolf if she was to take after her father. Little did we know she had already shifted, and the spell was useless. All attempts were lost, and we failed. The prophecy would come true. We would now not only be hunted by the wolves who would wish to use us to get the child but the witches who would blame us for allowing the hybrid to be born. So we went into hiding, running all while still keeping an eye on our granddaughter.
