Chapter 1: Onyx
She was falling, falling deeper into the abyss than she could ever fall. Her chest felt clogged, and she couldn't breathe. Her mind was in a haze, yet the memories poured through as though reminding her how stupid she had been. She was dying. She knew she couldn't survive this. She felt stupid for believing in them. Or for believing in him. She had always thought he was her father. But it turned out he had always wanted her for something else. He had trained her, along with a bunch of homeless kids. They had become his weapon. Who knew he would eliminate her when his plan succeeded? He had used her, he had used all of them. Right now, all she could think about was who her actual parents were. Regret pierced her heart, its spikes holding onto it, making her bleed. She felt it, she was slowly losing herself. She replayed the memories in her head. His fake smiles and his fake promises. His manipulation. It all dawned on her. Yet, she could do nothing. She died. … Zara gasped in shock as her eyes shot open, revealing the sky that had started to get painted with all shades of purple and orange. Confusion marred her face as she surveyed her surroundings. The lavish looking hotel and the countless people who stood, gloating as she stared around. “Oh, the ugly duckling is awake?” A voice pierced her ears, bringing her back to reality, and she turned to see a woman clad in a beautiful dress, holding a glass of wine which she sipped leisurely. She was none other than her stepsister’s friend. Her mind completely froze, trying to figure out exactly what was happening. The word “stepsister” rang in her head like a bell, forcing her to question her existence as she shivered from the cold that bit into her skin. Had she not died? She was supposed to be dead after getting shot. But why was she here? Ugly duckling? Her head throbbed from trying to figure it out. She stared down at her reflection in the pool, gasping in disbelief. How? Her face…it was not only covered in red spots that looked like poisoning, but was unrecognizable as well. This was not her. This was not Zara. It looked as though it belonged to someone else. Onyx? Onyx was twenty-year-old, just like her. She had been married off to a disabled stranger after her fiancé broke off their engagement and got together with her sister. As her memories flashed in Zara's mind, the realization suddenly dawned on her that the girl might have…died? Had she been reborn into her body? “Ah, Sister!” She heard the familiar voice of Yuri as she ran towards them as though concerned, yet Zara could smell the mischievance in her voice, making her blood boil. She could not understand how these voices felt, as though she had known them for years. “Are you okay? You suddenly fell into the pool.” She asked, and Zara had the urge to smirk. The latter knew how exactly she had fallen into the pool. It was all Yuri's doing after all. Now she acts like a saint, pretending to be a better person like she always did. Just then, footsteps echoed, and she turned to see Eric walk towards them. He was none other than her fiancé. Or was it Onyx's fiancé? “You...what are you doing here?” Eric spat, and she felt her heart tug painfully beneath her chest. There he was. The man she had always loved and admired. The same man who had murdered her along with her sister. She did not understand this pain. She did not understand why she was taking someone's life as though it was hers. Perhaps this was Onyx's emotion? Perhaps this was what her soul felt? The pain of being betrayed, just like how she had been betrayed. The only difference was that she had died of a bullet to the heart. And Onyx? She did not want to remember. “Why? I'm also a daughter of the Anderson family and your fiancé. Why can't I be here?" Zara asked, her tone marred with a lot of confidence. Onyx had never been this confident in her life, and never had she questioned Eric. But she could do it for her. She could make them pay for their betrayal. The crowd gasped as though they had never expected such an ugly looking girl to be Eric's fiancé. She had the urge to smirk at this. “Now, where were we?” she asked, tilting her head in question as her eyes moved to rest on Yuri, who stood beside Eric. Their posture seemed so intimate, so intimate that she felt a pang in her chest. But she knew this was Onyx's emotion and not hers. All of it was hers, including a second chance at life. She was grateful. “You better go back this instant.” Eric almost yelled, his teeth clenched as he spoke, and she totally enjoyed his misery. Onyx pouted her lips, her gaze moving to stare at him. “Looks like you've always wanted my sister and not me. Yuri, he is your brother-in-law and yet you cling to him so intimately?” she asked, her voice breaking, making all heads turn to them. She was trying to embarrass them, but she knew her words had some truth to them. They had always been together behind Onyx's back. A hand squeezed her heart painfully, yet she brought herself to smile. “I…” Yuri started, but Eric did not let her finish. Zara felt his grip on her arm as he pulled her towards the exit, tossing her out. She landed on the ground harshly, her arm scraping, yet she could not scream. She could only stare at him with pain in her blue eyes. The same hurt Onyx's soul felt. “Why?” she asked, her voice breaking, and her eyes watering as she stared at him. Why had he never loved her? Was it because of her face? Or was it something else? “You think I don't know how you were loose and secretly slept with a man on your birthday? Even your hideous look did not stop you, did it?” Eric spat, his eyes cold. Ah, she finally understood. This was also Yuri's doing, wasn't it? Or was he just trying to justify the fact that he was engaged to her and still lusted after her sister? She stood up, dusting the imaginary dirt that had latched itself onto her wet dress before staring deep into his eyes. “Get this straight, you better be in the mansion tonight, because I'm calling off our engagement. I'll call our family to arrange it.” He said, making her heart pang with pain. She chuckled as though she had lost her mind. “Fine.” she voiced out barely audible, but she knew he had caught it. “What did you say?” He asked, his voice marred with disbelief. As though he had never expected Onyx to speak in this situation, let alone agree to a break-up. She stared up at him, her gaze colder than it had ever been. “I agree.”
