“So when you see him walking down the street, you are going to run after him barefooted.”
“Barefooted?
“Yes,” said the director looking back at Kaitlyn. “We will be seeing your feet so you have to be. Don’t worry. It may look like asphalt and a regular street but it isn’t. Your feet will be safe.”
Kailyn gave a relieved sigh with her nod though looking at the street wondering what they had done to protect her feet. “Ok, I’m not calling after him or anything like that according to the script,” she said looking for any changes there may have been made in the dialog.
“No, there is no dialog in the first part of the scene. Once you reach him, we will readjust the lighting for the cameras then you will do the dialog. Part of the disadvantage of filming in the dark of night,” the director said smiling at Kaitlyn. She liked that her young star had studied the script well enough to know what the scenes entailed. She turned to find her male lead as she said “Marc, are you ready?”
Marc came to his first mark for the scene while saying “Yes, ready to go.”
While this was going on, Kaitlyn had moved up to the window she was to start at. The director moved back a bit to speak to one of the cameramen then went to talk to Kaitlyn. “Kaitlyn,” she said starting to give final directions.
“Please, just Kait, it’s easier for everyone,” Kaitlyn said moving to her cue on the floor.
“Ok Kait,” she said then continued. “We don’t want there to be too much light. This scene is at midnight which is why we are here at this time of night. I need you to be careful while running, but don’t be obvious about it. There’s nothing between you and Marc except the stairs. The camera will follow you down and out to him. Another will pick up outside the house. We will cut as the two of you reach and embrace.”
Kait nodded understanding her direction as she says “Alright, I’m ready.”
The director moved back behind the camera to her place to watch the filming. Once in her place, she called “Action!”
Kait looked out the window as her character was supposed to. She saw Marc on the street below. She dropped the book she had in her hand and ran for the stairs above the door. The camera following her. A second camera was following Marc as he did his part. Kait made it down to the door then out to the street. She was in character as she hit the street with her bare feet. She didn’t stop as she met Marc’s arms and they embraced. He lifted her off the ground as her arms went around his neck. Her smile matched his as they moved their lips to kiss.
As the kiss ended, the director called out “And Cut! Set up for the next scene the moon isn’t going to wait on us.”
Marc and Kait stood letting their make-up be touched up as the camera and lighting set-up were changed. Marc and Kait talked a bit while this was going on. They were laughing at something when the director came back to them. “Really, I’m actually surprised you took the role Kait. It’s not your normal role,” Marc said as the director approached them.
“I was surprised too. Lavenia talked me into it. It’s a stretch, but we have to grow in our art, right?”
“Yes indeed,” Marc said before they both turned to look at the director.
She smiled at the two of them. It was nice to have leads who were not trying to kill each other. Her last movie had been nothing but fights between her two leads. “I believe we are ready. Everything has been secured down. We will go up to when you lift her into your arms and carry her into the house,” she said giving them her last instructions before the calling for action.
She backed up to her screen. Nadine gave her ten count then she called out “Action!”
Marc pushed her back a bit as he said “Rosa let me look at you. I can hardly believe you are real. I’ve dreamed of this so long.”
Kait turned around to let him see her. She smiled at him as she said “I’m as real as you are. It is so wonderful to have you home again, Jack.”
Marc smiled as he moved forward to take her in his arms again kissing her. Breaking the kiss, he said “I didn’t mean to be gone so long, Rosa. I’m home now. I’m not planning on going anywhere.”
Kait smiled up at him. She moved her hand to caress his cheek. There was a tender, quiet moment between them as they stood letting their eyes look the other over. It was Marc’s place to break the silence between them. He moved closer to her as he leaned down whispering “I love you Rosa Isabella Winters. I’m going to spend the rest of our lives showing you just how much.”
Kaite blushed on cue before moved into his arms and lips as they kissed deeply once more. She backed away as the kiss ended as she turned to lead him to the house. He stopped her saying “Oh no, you are not getting away with that. It isn’t proper.”
“Isn’t proper? What on earth are you talking about?”
“There is a proper way for a man to take his bride into their new home.”
“Jack, I’ve been living in our house for two years. I’ve been over that threshold so many times now…”
He put his finger over her lips. “Don’t argue with me Rosa,” he said. “We are doing this right.”
Kait giggled as she blushed then laughs as he moved closer to her to pick her up in his arms. Just as he did one of the over light’s broke free of its restraint and flew towards the two. Neither of them saw it, but two cameramen did. They leapt over to knock the couple out of the way.
Marc yelled as he was tackled back almost to the ground by the cameraman. The other cameraman went to knock Kait out of the way. She went down as she was tackled. What no one but Marc and Joe, the cameraman with him. saw was the light hitting Kait in the head just before she went down. One of the lighting techs ran over to catch and stop the light before it did more damage. There was already glass all over where the two had just been standing.
Marc ran over with Joe right behind him. Both looked at the two on the ground. “You ok, Len?” they said in unison.
“Yeah, got out of the way just in time. I think the lens broke after we were out of the way. Not sure why,” Len said taking their hands and getting off the ground.
Once Len was out of the way, Marc made his way over to Kait quickly. “Kait, Kait, are you ok?” Marc said as Joe and Len moved to join him. Len was just realizing she hadn’t moved since they went down. It was now obvious she was unconscious. “Kait, come on wake up.”
Now it was Nadine’s turn to run over to her stars. Kait wasn’t moving and was surrounded and covered in glass. “Is she breathing?” Nadine said as she pulled out her phone while dialing.
Marc had already checked that. He nodded then said “Yes, she’s breathing but it is very shallow. I’m not sure it’s strong enough. I can’t find a heartbeat. It might be there but it is very slight if it is.”
“I’m getting an ambulance and EMTs now.”
“Kait, come one wake up. We have a movie to make. Come on,” Marc said not wanting to move her, but wanting to get her to respond. He hoped by talking to her, she would hear him and wake up, or at least, hold to his voice till they could get her help. Marc was hoping the EMTs were going to get there quickly.
Nadine was next to him talking to 911. She was answering their questions as best she could. Marc finally got the nerve up to move Kait’s head. The light had hit her on the left side which was currently on the street. He moved it. The gash was gushing blood when he lifted it revealing the pool it was creating. He pulled his shirt off to put it against the wound quickly.
“Oh my god, she’s bleeding like crazy,” Nadine said not even thinking about 911 listening. Marc put pressure on it by putting her head back against the shirt.
Marc’s hand went by her face as he blanched before he said “She’s stopped breathing!” His words come just as the EMTs drove up. One was over to them quickly. Marc started speaking quickly “She just stopped breathing. Her head is bleeding in gushes. I put my shirt against it to try to stop it. The light hit her just as the lens shattered while Joe was trying to get her out of the way.”
The EMT nodded as he moved to check her vitals. He waved the other over who was bringing what they needed with him, including the defibrillator. They started working on the actress dying in front of everyone.
Marc stepped back to let them work. Nadine was on another call trying to do damage control. The lighting head tech had finally made it over and was going over the scene trying to find out how the light had come free. Everyone was doing what they could to understand and fix the situation.
It didn’t take long for another voice to come booming over the noise “What the hell happen?”
“Mr. Maitland, we are trying to find out exactly what happened, sir.”
The man looked at the Assistant Producer saying “Let Nadine tell me…”
Nadine had moved back to face the man. “Mr. Maitland, we were filming. Marc and Kait were doing excellent and almost done with the scene, I’m not sure what caused it yet, but if Len and Joe had not acted it could have been both of them. One of the lights freed itself and came down where they were standing. Len was able to get Marc out of the way, but Kait was hit on the side of her head by the light as it shattered while Joe was trying to get her out of the way. Max is still assessing the reason for it falling.”
The EMTs were working hard to bring Kait back from the dead as Marc stood watching them next to Joe. The two of them seemed to be more in shock than the rest of the crew. Mr. Maitland then turned to talk to Max asking him repeatedly how this could happen. Didn’t they strap it down properly? He kept going on. Max patiently answered his questions while explaining all safety precautions had been followed. He had even employed extra precautions due to the moving structure the lights were set upon.
Marc was repeatedly saying “Come on Kait, you’re too young to give up. Fight it! Come back to us!”
The EMTs kept doing CPR between using the defibrillator. Kait wasn’t responding in any way. They were running out of time. Kaitlyn Dupre was dead. She wasn’t responding to treatment. She was still bleeding from her head into Marc’s shirt. If she didn't come back soon, it would be too late.
While part of the crew was trying to figure out how it happened, the other half was watching the EMTs trying to stop Kait from falling victim to the “curse” believed to be following the movie. The same curse which had killed Anara Praxon, exactly ten years ago to the minute.
