Dr. Dustan Reeves came out of the room where Kaitlyn was taken. He spoke to a nurse for a moment who pointed to the newly gathered group in the emergency waiting room. He nodded before he said something else to her, then headed to those waiting. Nadine stood up first, but Lavenia was closest to him when she stood to greet the doctor. Marc and Edgar Maitland stood last. Dr. Reeves walked over to them with his hands together while slowing his breath. His body language not telling them anything positive. None of those assembled were blood to Kaitlyn. None of them were going to get overly emotional over her condition, but the doctor had no idea that was the case. As he reached them, he looked around at them before he said “Kaitlyn Dupre?” “Yes,” Mr. Maitland said before any of the rest had a chance. In his experience, it is the patriarch or matriarch of the family which spoke up first. He directed his words to Mr. Maitland presuming him to be the patriarch as he said “I’m Dr. Reeves. I’m in charge of her case. Well, as you know we lost her twice on the way in. I understand when the EMTs arrived she was dead. We got her back. She’s stable right now. I’m expecting her to stay stable. I’m not sure how long she will be unconscious. Her body and brain only know that answer. I expect we will have more information in the next twenty-four hours. I’ve got some tests running to make sure we didn’t miss anything. Now the head wound didn’t cause a skull fracture. I do have a CAT scan set up to let us know if there is any fluid or blood in the brain cavity. I’m also looking to see if there was any bruising of the brain. Other than that we have bandaged all the cuts. As I said, the next twenty-four hours will let us know more. Any questions?” “Do we know if her being dead caused any damage?” “No,” Dr. Reeves said. “Unfortunately, we won’t know that till she awakens. The CAT Scan will give us some probability, but we won’t be sure till she wakes.” They all looked at each other. Finally, Mr. Maitland said, “Thank you, Dr. Reeves.” Dr. Reeves left the group as they started discussing what they were going to do next.
