Chapter 1
Blood on Marble Elena wiped her hands on the edge of her apron and checked the time on the hallway clock. 11:47 p.m. Too late for decent people. Perfect timing for the rich. The executive floor of the Bellissimo Grand Hotel was quiet, but not empty. It was never empty. Money did not sleep. It whispered behind locked doors and signed papers after midnight. “Elena,” Mrs. Carter called from the end of the hall. “Suite 1903 is added. Be quick.” Elena nodded. “Yes, ma’am.” She didn’t complain. She never did. Her mother’s hospital bill sat heavy in her bag downstairs. The pharmacy had refused to release medication that morning without payment. Her youngest brother needed new shoes for school. Her older sister had stopped asking for help with tuition. Elena could not afford mistakes. Or curiosity. She pushed her cart toward Suite 1903. The door was slightly open. That was unusual. She paused. There were voices inside. Male. Low. Tense. She should leave. She knew that. But the hotel had rules. Open door meant service. No excuses. She knocked gently. “Housekeeping.” Silence. Then— “Get out,” a man snapped from inside. Elena froze. The voice wasn’t irritated. It was angry. Sharp enough to cut skin. “I just need to clean,” she said softly. “It will only take a few minutes.” Another voice answered. Calm. Deep. Controlled. “Let her.” Something about that tone made her stomach tighten. She pushed the cart inside. The suite was massive. Floor-to-ceiling windows overlooked the city lights. Expensive art. Leather chairs. The smell of cologne and something metallic. There were three men. Two stood near the balcony doors. The third sat in a chair at the center of the room. Elena kept her eyes down. Professional. Invisible. Silent. She began clearing empty glasses from the coffee table. Her hands did not shake. She had trained herself well. But then she heard it. “Please,” the man in the chair whispered. Elena’s fingers paused over a glass. Please? She glanced up. The man in the chair looked pale. Sweat ran down his temple. His hands were tied behind him. Her breath caught. This was not a business meeting. “Sign it,” the calm voice said. She followed the sound. He stood near the window. Tall. Broad shoulders. Dark suit tailored perfectly to his frame. His hair was black, brushed back neatly. His face— Cold. Not angry. Not emotional. Just certain. The man in the chair shook his head. “I can’t. They’ll kill my family.” The suited man tilted his head slightly. “They already planned to.” Elena felt her pulse in her ears. This was wrong. She needed to leave. Slowly, she picked up her cart and moved toward the door. “Stop.” Her body went still. The command was not loud. It didn’t need to be. She turned. The man by the window was looking at her now. Really looking at her. His eyes were dark. Not warm. Not kind. Just observant. “You heard nothing,” he said. It wasn’t a question. “Yes, sir,” she replied quickly. Her voice sounded small in the large room. “Come here.” Her feet refused. One of the other men stepped forward. “Boss—” “I said come here.” Elena swallowed and walked toward him. Up close, he was taller than she expected. Maybe six-foot-three. He smelled faintly of cedar and something sharper beneath it. “What’s your name?” he asked. “Elena.” “Last name.” “Rossi.” He studied her face like he was memorizing it. “You work here long?” “Two years.” “Do you enjoy it?” The question confused her. “It pays,” she said. One corner of his mouth twitched. Not a smile. Behind her, the man in the chair started crying. “Elena,” the suited man said quietly, “look at me.” She did. And for a second, she forgot to breathe. There was something dangerous in his eyes. Not chaos. Not madness. Control. Complete control. “Leave,” he told her. Relief rushed through her body. She turned— A gunshot exploded behind her. The sound slammed into her chest. She gasped and spun around. The man in the chair collapsed forward. Blood spilled onto the white marble floor. Bright. Red. Too red. Her stomach twisted. One of the other men moved quickly, checking the body. “It’s done,” he said. Elena stared at the blood spreading across the floor she had mopped an hour ago. Her knees felt weak. She had just watched a man die. The suited man lowered the gun calmly and handed it to his guard. Then he looked at her. Their eyes locked. This time, she saw it. Not anger. Not regret. Calculation. He walked toward her slowly. Each step echoed against marble. She wanted to run. She couldn’t move. “Look at me,” he said again. She forced herself to. “You saw nothing.” Her lips parted, but no sound came. One of the guards stepped closer. “We can’t let her go.” Her heart slammed against her ribs. The suited man didn’t look away from her. “She’s not a problem.” “How do you know?” His gaze stayed fixed on Elena. “Because she’s terrified.” He wasn’t wrong. Her hands were ice cold. But something inside her refused to beg. “I won’t say anything,” she whispered. He tilted his head. “Of course you won’t.” It wasn’t trust. It was certainty. “What’s your mother’s name?” he asked suddenly. The question hit her like a slap. “W-what?” “Your mother. What is her name?” Fear crawled up her spine. “Maria,” she said quietly. “And your siblings?” Her chest tightened. “How do you—” He raised a hand, silencing her. “I know everything about the people in rooms I use.” The message was clear. He knew where she lived. Who she loved. Who could be hurt. Tears burned her eyes, but she blinked them back. “I’m not your enemy,” she said, her voice shaking despite her effort. He studied her for a long moment. “No,” he agreed softly. “You’re not.” The room felt smaller. The blood on the floor felt closer. “What happens to me?” she asked. One of the guards shifted, impatient. The suited man finally stepped back. “You go home tonight.” Her knees nearly gave out from relief. “But,” he continued, “if you speak about this to anyone, even in a whisper, I will know.” His voice remained calm. That made it worse. “And if I know,” he added, “I will remove the problem.” She understood. He wasn’t threatening her. He was promising. “What’s your name?” she asked before she could stop herself. The guard looked shocked at her boldness. But the suited man didn’t seem offended. “Dante,” he said. Just Dante. He walked past her toward the door. The guards followed, stepping carefully around the spreading blood. At the entrance, he paused and glanced back. “Elena.” She stiffened. “Yes?” “Next time you knock. And wait.” Then he left. The suite fell silent except for her uneven breathing. She stood there for several seconds, staring at the body. Then training took over. She moved mechanically, grabbing her supplies. Her job was to clean. So she cleaned. She scrubbed blood from marble with shaking hands. She changed the rug. She wiped the glass table again. By the time security quietly arrived to “handle the situation,” the room looked almost normal. Almost. When she finally clocked out, the night air hit her like a wave. She leaned against the building and tried to breathe. Dante. The name echoed in her head. She didn’t know who he was. But she knew one thing. Men like him did not leave loose ends. And tonight he had let her walk
