Chapter One: The Perfect Illusion
Isabella adjusted the pearl earrings Daniel had gifted her on their third wedding anniversary, gazing at her reflection in the mirror. A picture-perfect wife. The devoted partner to a successful businessman. A woman who had everything—wealth, status, and a husband adored by many. But behind that poised exterior was a truth so dark it would destroy everything in its wake. She had never loved Daniel. Not for a single day. The clock on the nightstand read 7:58 PM. Right on time. She turned her head slightly, listening. The sound of Daniel’s footsteps echoed down the hallway, followed by the soft creak of their bedroom door opening. She felt his gaze on her as she continued adjusting her necklace, playing her part with flawless precision. “Getting ready for the gala?” Daniel’s voice was smooth, practiced. He was good at pretending, too. She turned to him with a small, knowing smile. “Of course. It’s an important night for you.” His eyes lingered on her face, searching for something—doubt, hesitation, a crack in the mask. But Isabella had spent years perfecting this act. She reached for his tie, her fingers brushing against the silk as she tightened it for him. An affectionate wife, a loyal partner. If only he knew. Daniel leaned in, pressing a kiss to her temple. It should have been comforting, intimate. But Isabella had long grown numb to his touch. “I’ll see you downstairs,” he murmured before stepping away. As soon as the door closed behind him, Isabella turned back to the mirror, watching her own expression shift. The warmth drained from her face, replaced by something colder. Sharper. Tonight was the beginning of the end. The gala was extravagant, as expected. Crystal chandeliers cast a golden glow over the ballroom, and the sound of laughter and conversation filled the air. Daniel thrived in events like this—charming, powerful, respected. He worked the room with ease, greeting associates and investors, never once faltering in his carefully curated image. Isabella stayed by his side, playing her part perfectly. She smiled at the right moments, nodded in agreement, and let Daniel’s hand rest possessively on her waist. But she was waiting for one person in particular. Melissa. The other woman. She spotted her near the bar, draped in a dangerously low-cut red dress, her laughter high and flirtatious as she whispered something to a man Isabella didn’t recognize. The sight of her would have broken most wives—sent them into fits of jealousy and rage. Not Isabella. Melissa thought she was the one playing a game. She believed she had successfully seduced Daniel, turned him into a cheating husband, and stolen his heart. She had no idea that every step she took had been carefully placed before her. “Excuse me for a moment,” Isabella murmured to Daniel, slipping away before he could question her. She approached Melissa with the grace of a queen, her smile serene. “Enjoying yourself?” Melissa turned, her expression momentarily flickering with surprise before she smirked. “Isabella. What a pleasant surprise.” Isabella let out a soft laugh. “Oh, I’m sure it is.” Melissa’s smirk widened. “I must say, your husband is quite the charmer. But I suppose you already know that.” Isabella tilted her head slightly, observing her. Poor girl. So confident. So sure of her victory. If only she knew how the game would end. Before Isabella could respond, a voice interrupted them. “Ladies.” She turned, meeting the intense gaze of Ethan—Melissa’s brother. His presence was an unexpected variable, one she hadn’t fully accounted for. Ethan was dangerous in a way his sister wasn’t. While Melissa played reckless games, Ethan was calculated. He watched people too closely. And right now, his sharp gaze was locked onto Isabella, as if trying to decipher a puzzle he had just discovered. “Ethan,” she greeted smoothly. His lips curled into a knowing smile. “I have to say, I find your composure rather fascinating.” Melissa let out a small scoff. “Oh, Isabella doesn’t care, do you? You must be used to it by now.” Isabella met Ethan’s gaze head-on. “You’d be surprised at what I get used to.” His eyes narrowed slightly, but he said nothing. Melissa, oblivious, linked her arm through her brother’s. “Come, let’s get another drink.” As the siblings walked away, Isabella exhaled slowly. The game had just become more interesting. But it wasn’t over yet. Not even close. By the time the gala ended, Isabella had seen all she needed to. The way Daniel’s hand lingered on Melissa’s lower back. The stolen glances. The whispered words. The perfect illusion was cracking. On the drive home, she leaned back against the car seat, her fingers tracing the edge of her wedding ring. Daniel sat beside her, his expression unreadable. When they arrived, he barely spared her a glance before stepping inside. She followed, her heels clicking softly against the marble floor. As soon as they reached their bedroom, Daniel loosened his tie, exhaustion evident in his posture. “It was a good night.” Isabella unfastened her earrings, setting them down. “It was.” He turned to her, studying her. “You were quieter than usual.” She met his gaze, her smile soft. “Just taking everything in.” A flicker of suspicion crossed his face. “Is that so?” She stepped closer, placing a hand on his chest. “Of course. After all, our life is perfect, isn’t it?” Daniel’s lips parted as if he wanted to say something, but before he could, Isabella leaned up and kissed him. Slow. Sweet. Deceptive. Because even as she kissed him, her mind was already calculating her next move. She pulled away with a smile. “Goodnight, darling.” Daniel watched her for a moment before nodding. “Goodnight.” He turned off the lights, slipping into bed. Isabella followed, resting beside him, her heartbeat steady. But her mind was racing. Step one was complete. Now, it was time for step two. And by the time Daniel realized what was happening, it would be far too late. At precisely 2:34 AM, Isabella’s phone vibrated against the nightstand. She opened her eyes, already expecting the message. She reached for it, the glow of the screen illuminating her face. Unknown Number: It’s done. He took the bait. A slow, satisfied smile curled on her lips. She deleted the message. And as she lay back down, she listened to the soft, steady breaths of her sleeping husband. Poor Daniel. He had no idea the woman lying beside him was the one orchestrating his destruction. And soon, there would be nothing left of him but the ruins of everything he once held dear.
