Chapter One: The Girl Who Refused to Bow
Ariana Brooks tightened her grip on the tray she carried as she walked through the enormous halls of the Moretti mansion. The polished marble floors reflected the golden chandeliers hanging above her. Expensive paintings covered the walls, and every piece of furniture looked like it belonged in a museum. No matter how long she worked there, the place still felt unreal. But unlike the other servants, Ariana wasn't impressed. To her, it was just a giant house owned by people who had more money than they knew what to do with. "Ariana!" She turned at the sound of her name. Mrs. Romano, the head housekeeper, hurried toward her. "Mr. Moretti is returning today." Ariana sighed. "And?" The older woman stared at her. "And? That's all you have to say?" Ariana shrugged. "I've never met him." Mrs. Romano lowered her voice. "That's Damien Moretti." The name immediately caught Ariana's attention. Everyone in the mansion knew Damien Moretti. The servants whispered about him. The guards respected him. The enemies feared him. And according to the rumors, he was as cold as ice. Ariana rolled her eyes. "He can't be that scary." Mrs. Romano nearly dropped the stack of towels in her hands. "Don't let him hear you say that." Ariana laughed. She wasn't afraid of rich men in expensive suits. Not even dangerous ones. Especially not dangerous ones. "Now stop talking and get back to work," Mrs. Romano ordered. Ariana gave a playful salute. "Yes, ma'am." The older woman walked away, muttering prayers under her breath. Ariana shook her head. People acted like Damien Moretti was some kind of monster. How bad could he be? Little did she know she was about to find out. Hours later, dark clouds covered the sky. Rain began falling against the mansion windows. Ariana stood in the library dusting shelves. The room was silent except for the sound of the storm outside. She enjoyed moments like this. No orders. No complaints. Just peace. Then the front doors opened. A loud commotion echoed through the mansion. Servants rushed into the hall. Guards straightened instantly. The atmosphere changed. Ariana frowned. "What now?" Curious, she stepped out of the library. The grand entrance hall was filled with people. And standing in the center of it all was a man dressed entirely in black. Tall. Broad shoulders. Dark hair. Sharp features. Cold gray eyes. The moment Ariana saw him, she knew. Damien Moretti. The infamous heir. Everyone around him looked nervous. Everyone except Ariana. Damien removed his black gloves slowly while speaking to one of his guards. His voice was calm. Controlled. Dangerous. The kind of voice that made people listen immediately. Ariana watched from the staircase. Then, as if sensing her gaze, Damien looked up. Their eyes met. The world seemed to pause. For one brief second, neither looked away. Ariana expected arrogance. Instead, she saw something else. Loneliness. The feeling disappeared so quickly she wondered if she had imagined it. Damien's expression returned to stone. He looked away first. Ariana scoffed. "Definitely arrogant." She turned to leave. Unfortunately, fate had other plans. An hour later, Ariana was carrying a stack of freshly folded sheets through the west wing. Her vision was mostly blocked. She couldn't see where she was going. Which was why she slammed directly into someone. The sheets exploded everywhere. Ariana froze. "Oh no." The expensive black shoes in front of her looked familiar. Slowly, she lifted her gaze. Damien Moretti. Of course. Who else would her terrible luck choose? For several seconds, neither spoke. The hallway felt unusually quiet. Then Damien looked at the pile of sheets scattered around his feet. His jaw tightened. Ariana waited for him to move. He didn't. She crossed her arms. "Well?" One eyebrow rose. "Well what?" "You could help." The servants watching from nearby looked horrified. Nobody spoke to Damien that way. Nobody. Damien glanced at the sheets. "No." Ariana blinked. "No?" "No." The audacity. Ariana felt her temper rise. "You know, most people apologize after running into someone." His gaze sharpened. "You ran into me." "You were standing in the middle of the hallway." The corner of his mouth twitched. Not a smile. Something more dangerous. "And you're stubborn." Ariana bent down and gathered a sheet. "And you're rude." The nearby servants looked ready to faint. Damien stepped closer. Close enough that Ariana could feel his presence. Close enough that her heart skipped unexpectedly. She immediately hated herself for noticing. His gray eyes studied her. Unlike everyone else in the mansion, she wasn't afraid. She didn't lower her gaze. She didn't apologize. She challenged him. Interesting. Very interesting. Damien wasn't used to interesting people. "What's your name?" he asked. Ariana stood. "Ariana Brooks." His gaze lingered. Then he nodded once. Without another word, he walked away. Ariana stared after him. That was it? No threat? No punishment? Nothing? The man was impossible. She grabbed the remaining sheets and continued working. But she couldn't stop thinking about him. And somewhere else in the mansion, Damien Moretti found himself thinking about her too. For the first time in years, someone had looked him directly in the eyes and refused to be intimidated. Most people feared him. Ariana Brooks didn't. And for reasons he couldn't explain, that bothered him. That night, Ariana sat on the narrow bed in her servant quarters as rain tapped steadily against the window. The mansion had finally fallen silent. She opened the novel she'd been reading, determined to lose herself in its pages, but her concentration refused to cooperate. Every time she turned a page, a pair of cold gray eyes flashed through her mind. Damien Moretti. Arrogant. Rude. Infuriating. Yet somehow impossible to forget. With a frustrated sigh, she tossed the book aside and lay back on her pillow, staring at the ceiling. Why was she even thinking about him? He was her employer's son. A wealthy, powerful man whose world couldn't have been more different from hers. Their paths would cross occasionally, and that would be the end of it. At least, that's what she told herself. Meanwhile, on the top floor of the mansion, Damien stood before the floor-to-ceiling windows of his private office. The city lights glittered below, blurred by the rain. His desk was covered with reports, contracts, and messages that demanded his attention. Yet his thoughts kept drifting elsewhere. To a servant with fiery eyes and a stubborn attitude. A woman who had looked him directly in the eye and challenged him without hesitation. Most people feared Damien Moretti. Ariana Brooks didn't. And for reasons he couldn't explain, he found that both irritating and fascinating. A slow smile threatened to form before he pushed it away. She was nothing more than a servant. Yet she had occupied his thoughts all evening. That alone made her dangerous. Neither Ariana nor Damien knew it yet, but fate had already begun weaving their lives together. And some threads, once tied, could never be undone.
