CHAPTER TWO
Enzo sat on the shore, his feet in the water and his eyes on the horizon. He felt at peace, the ocean stretching out before him like an endless canvas. But something was missing - he felt a strange emptiness, as if there was a void that needed to be filled. He looked at the girl beside him, feeling strangely drawn to her, even though he barely knew her. She was looking out at the ocean too, her dark hair blowing in the wind. Suddenly, Enzo felt the need to know her name.
"What's your name?"
As Enzo waited for her to answer his question, she turned to him and smiled. But instead of answering, she said,
"You know, I've been watching you since we met you at the forest. And I think you have great potential in the spiritual realm. You have a strong connection to the unseen world."
Enzo blinked, taken aback by her words. "What do you mean?" he asked, his voice a little shaky.
"I mean that you have a gift," the girl said, her eyes glowing with excitement. "You can connect to the spiritual world in a way that most people can't. It's a rare gift, and it could take you far, if you're willing to nurture it."
Enzo's mind was reeling. He had no idea what to say, so he just stared at the girl, speechless.
"I know it's a lot to take in," the girl said, her tone gentle. "But I promise you, it's true. You have the potential to do great things."
"I'm sorry, but I just don't believe that," Enzo said, shaking his head. "No one has ever told me that I have any potential, spiritual or otherwise. And I don't see how that could possibly be true."
Her expression softened, and she placed a hand on his arm. "You don't have to believe it right away," she said, her voice soothing.
Enzo shifted uncomfortably, feeling a bit unsettled by the girl's words. "But what does that even mean?" he asked, his voice betraying his confusion. "I don't understand any of this."
"I know it's hard to believe," the girl said, "but I saw your eyes glow with a white light, just for a moment. It was like nothing I've ever seen before. And that's why I know that there's something special about you."
Enzo stared at her, wide-eyed. "My eyes glowed?" he said, his voice hushed. "That's not possible. No one's eyes glow like that."
The girl smiled, a knowing look in her eyes. "That's what you think now," she said. "But one day, you'll see that it's true.
"Here," the girl said, reaching into her pocket and pulling out a small, golden pendant on a chain. "Take this with you to the palace. It will help you pass into the palace easily."
Enzo took the pendant, staring at it in wonder. "But why are you giving this to me?" he asked, his voice full of confusion. "I don't understand."
"You don't need to understand everything right now," the girl said, a smile playing on her lips. "Just trust that you're meant to have this. And trust that you're meant for great things. The king believes that men with the gift of charm are like a secret weapon," the girl explained. "He thinks that they can be trained to use their abilities to help the kingdom in times of crisis. And he believes that you have the potential to be one of those men."
Enzo felt his heart skip a beat. "You mean I could be trained by the king?" he asked, his eyes wide. "But nobody believes in me and I'm yet to discover how to use the charm properly. I'm not fit to serve anyone, let alone the king."
"Don't sell yourself short," the girl said, her tone firm but kind.
"I must be going," the girl said, turning to leave. But as she took a few steps away, she paused and turned back to Enzo.
"Adriana, that is my name,"
With that, she turned and walked away, leaving Enzo standing alone on the beach, holding the golden pendant in his hand. He looked down at the trinket, then back up at the ocean, which was glistening in the moonlight. He felt a sense of wonder and possibility, and a spark of hope ignited within him.
While Enzo walked back to his small hut on the outskirts of the village, he couldn't help but think about what Adriana had said. He was still trying to wrap his head around the idea that he could be destined for something more. But as he approached his home, he was brought back to the present moment. He heard the sound of his mother chanting her charms in the dim light of the fire. It was something she did every night, but tonight, it felt different.
"What are you doing, Mother?" Enzo asked, stepping inside the hut.
His mother turned to him, her eyes full of recognition and understanding. "You have been touched by magic," she said, her voice quiet but steady. "I have known this day would come, but I didn't know when."
Enzo's heart started racing. "What do you mean?" he asked, feeling a sense of panic rising in his chest.
"There is no need to fear, my son," his mother said, placing a hand on his arm. "It is a blessing, not a curse. You have been chosen for something great. Tomorrow, you will go to the palace," his mother said, her eyes serious. "You must not tell anyone about what has happened to you, and especially not about your encounter with the girl. This is something that must remain between us, for now."
Enzo nodded, his head spinning with questions. But he knew he had to trust his mother. She had always been his guide and protector, and he knew she would not lead him astray.
"How did you know about the girl?" Enzo asked, his voice full of disbelief.
His mother smiled, a knowing look in her eyes. "I have always been able to sense things beyond the physical realm," she said. "I knew you would meet someone special, someone who would change your life. And when you came home tonight, I could sense that something had happened."
"But how?" Enzo asked, his mind racing. "I didn't tell you about the girl. How could you possibly know?"
His mother laughed, a light and carefree laugh that put Enzo at ease.
I can't explain it, my son," his mother said. "It's a feeling, an intuition. Some things cannot be explained, they can only be felt. I know it may seem strange, but it is a gift I have always had."
Enzo sat in silence, trying to process everything his mother had said. It was a lot to take in, but he knew that she was speaking the truth. She had always been attuned to things beyond the physical world, and he trusted her completely.
"You should get some rest," his mother said, placing a hand on his shoulder.
As he lay down to sleep that night, he couldn't help but wonder what the future held for him.
***
As Enzo wandered through the palace grounds, he saw a large open space surrounded by a high wall. This must be the training ground, he thought. And sure enough, as he got closer, he could see men and women practicing with swords, spears, and other weapons. They moved with precision and skill, their faces set in concentration.
As Enzo watched, he noticed a group of three men standing off to the side, laughing and talking. He recognized them from the village - they were always making fun of him, calling him names and pushing him around. He felt a surge of anger rise up within him.
Suddenly, Enzo heard a booming voice from the center of the training ground. He turned to see a group of elderly men, all dressed in fine robes and wearing golden circlets on their heads. These must be the leaders of the training, he thought.
"Gather round!" one of the men shouted, and the other men and women stopped their training and moved to the center of the grounds. Enzo joined them, his heart pounding in his chest. What would happen next?
"Today, we will train you in the art of both charms and swords," the man continued.
The leader of the training then turned to the group and said, "Now, I want each of you to try to lift a stone using only your charm. No physical strength, only mental strength. Ready?"
There was a murmur of assent from the group, and everyone closed their eyes and focused their minds. Enzo tried to clear his thoughts, focusing only on the stone in front of him. He could feel the energy around him, pulsing and shifting. He reached out with his mind, trying to connect with the stone. It felt like a wall, impenetrable and unmoving. He struggled and strained.
King Adler and his son, Prince Liam, stood on the balcony, looking down at the group of trainees. King Adler's eyes were sharp and focused, while Prince Liam's eyes darted around, taking in everything. The king's face was stern, but Prince Liam's face was filled with curiosity and excitement. The two of them stood side by side.
"One of you is not ready for this training," King Adler said, his voice cutting through the air like a knife. "You there, boy," he said, pointing at Enzo. "Step out of the line."
Enzo felt the blood drain from his face. He had been so focused on the stone, trying to connect with it, that he hadn't noticed that his charm wasn't working. He felt like a failure, like he had let everyone down. He took a deep breath and stepped out of the line, his head hanging low.
As Enzo stood alone, he could hear the other trainees whispering behind him. "He must be cursed," one of them said. "No one can be that bad at charm even the ladies can do it."
"He's a failure," another said, and the others began to laugh. Enzo felt like he wanted to disappear. He could feel the heat of embarrassment rising in his cheeks, and he wanted nothing more than to run away. But he couldn't move, frozen in place by shame.
"Enough," King Adler said, his voice thunderous. "You, boy," he said, pointing at Enzo. "You are not ready for this training. Go home and practice. When you are ready, you may return."
Enzo felt a rush of shame and embarrassment. "But, Your Majesty," he began, but the king cut him off with a wave of his hand.
"Go," he said, his tone final. "Do not return until you have mastered your charm."
The other trainees were silent, staring at Enzo with a mixture of pity and contempt.
As Enzo walked toward the exit, his head hung low, he felt a strange tingling sensation in his fingertips. He looked down at his hands and saw that they were glowing, like tiny suns. The sensation was electric, like the air around him was charged with energy. He looked around and saw that the stones on the ground were beginning to rise, as if they were being pulled upward by an invisible force. He lifted his hands, and the stones rose higher and higher, until they were floating in the air, spinning around him like planets orbiting a star.
A smile spread across Enzo's face, a smile of pure wonder and joy. He turned to the king, the glowing stones swirling around him like a halo. "Your Majesty," he said, his voice steady and clear. "I believe I am ready."
As Enzo stood there, surrounded by glowing stones, the king noticed something else: Enzo's eyes were glowing, too. They were shining like two tiny suns, radiating energy and light. The king had never seen anything like it before. It was as if the boy had been transformed, as if he had become something other than human.
The king's smile grew even wider. "You are something... else." The king whispered.
"Take him to the dungeons!" His voice thundered.
