Chapter XI

Fae’s POV “I win!” I yell slapping the front door of the pack-house. We had just returned from our run. We had thrown on our clothes and raced to the house. “Only because I had a better view from back here.” He teased with that rumbling laugh. I turned and slapped his arm laughing. “Whatever. You’re just saying that because you lost.” He grabbed me tickling along my sides as I squirmed trying to get away. We were both laughing when the door opened. “What is going on here?” Whatever her name is was standing in the door looking at me like I was something unpleasant she had found on the bottom of her shoe. “Good morning, Lucinda.” Lycus laughed as he took my hand, walking into the pack-house. “We’re just coming back from a run. How is your morning so far?” “Oh fine. I was just coming to see if our future Luna,” she said luna like it left a bad taste in her mouth. “was settling in okay. It seems you can take the rogue out of the forest but you can’t take the forest out of the rogue.” She sneered, taking in my bare legs beneath Lycus’ oversized t-shirt and bare feet. I felt Lycus tense next to me. “What exactly is that supposed to mean Lucinda?” “Oh nothing, it’s just some people clearly fit in a civilized pack.” She patted her perfectly swept up hair. “And others just don’t.” Is she right? Can we actually live in a place like this? Stop it. We just got here yesterday. She’s just mad. Maybe Lycus smiled with a deadly look in his face. “I suggest…” He was cut off by the bundle of energy running down the stairs. “Fae!” I looked up as a huge smile broke across my face. “Good morning, Rica!” I sidestepped Lucinda and hurried to meet Rica at the bottom of the stairs. I was ready for a kind greeting but instead the young girls arms wrapped around my waist hugging me tight. My heart constricted as I hugged her back. “Mom says you’re going shopping today!” I looked at Lycus to confirm. I know that had been the plan, but I still felt pretty uncomfortable about it. “Yes, we are. Fae could use some clothes.” “Ha, you can put lipstick on a pig but…” “I suggest you don’t finish that sentence.” Lycus looked down at the Gamma’s daughter with an expression that could freeze blood in a person’s veins. Lucinda scoffed but wisely kept her mouth shut as she turned on her perfect heel and walked out of the packhouse. “So, can I go?!” Rica asked bouncing on her toes as if nothing awkward was going on. “Go where?” I turned to see the twins walking in from the dining room. “We’re taking Fae shopping!” Rica answered. “We?” Lycus’ smirked at his little sister. “Who said you were coming?” She looked up at me rolling her eyes. “We all know I’m coming.” “Uh huh.” “We could always go just us girls.” Came a comment from the top of the stairs. We all looked up to see Jessica walking down the stairs smiling at the group that had gathered in the foyer. That actually sounds kind of nice…. “Wait! You’re trying to uninvite me?!” Lycus was looking at his mother like she was crazy. “Well, it’s not like we actually need you.” Jess smiled as she got to the bottom of the stairs hugging Rica good morning before walking to me to do the same. I didn’t really know what to think as the woman’s arms wrapped around me. But it did feel nice… “Good morning, Fae darling.” She touched my cheek affectionately. “Good morning, Luna.” “What did I say about that dear?” “I’m sorry Jess.” “That’s a little better.” She smiled warmly. I really liked her. “How about this. Rica and I will meet you down here in an hour. That should give everyone time to get ready and then the three of us will go and leave the men to get some pack business taken care of.” “But mom! I wanted to take her.” I couldn’t help the giggle at Lycus’ childish response to his mother’s statement. “Huh, I seem to recall you and your father having a meeting with Alpha Farkas from Woodland.” “Well, yeah but dad can manage without me…” I looked up at my mate, realizing he had had every intention of blowing off another pack Alpha to take me out for clothes. “No, no way.” He looked down at me. “Lycus’ you are not missing a meeting with another pack simply so you can watch me buy a couple shirts. You stay here. We’ll be back in no time.” “A couple shirts?” “Well, yeah.” “No little mate. You will be buying an entire wardrobe and anything else you might want.” “Okay clearly you are talking crazy. I’m going to go up and get dressed. I’ll see you down here shortly.” “Alright dear.” Jess smiled as I started up the stairs towards our bedroom. Lycus’ POV “You better not let her get away with just a few items mom.” “Are you kidding? You know who you are talking to.” We walked into the dining room, sitting around the table as we spoke. “I’m not letting a daughter of mine walk around in shoes held together by duct tape.” “Duct tape?” I looked at her in confusion, noticing Rica nodding along. “You didn’t notice her shoes?” “Well no.” Rica and Jess looked at each other, rolling their eyes. “Men!” “What about us?” Kennealy had walked in just in time to hear his mother and sister degrading his gender. “You don’t notice things like a person’s shoes.” “Oh, are we talking about Faes’?” I looked at my brother in shock while mom and Rica started laughing. “Kenny dear Rica and I are taking Fae shopping. Would you like to join us?” “Sure. Sounds good.” I noticed the twins leaned together snickering. Unfortunately for them so did Ken. “Just for that, I won’t be bringing either of you a Cinn-a-bun.” He smirked at their crestfallen expressions. Grayson punched Carter in the arm. “This is your fault.” “I’m sorry Ken. We were just teasing. But really we think the ladies are lucky to have someone as incredible as you to watch out for them.” “Suck up!” “Rica!” “Sorry mom!” I was really struggling to keep from laughing when I noticed my new favorite scent. “Hey little mate.” I greeted her, looking up as she walked into the dining room. “I’m not little.” She mumbled walking up to me. “Uh huh” I looked at my beautiful mate. She seemed to be wearing her own shorts which were very worn out. One of my shirts that she had tied up at her waist and her tennis shoes. I now noticed that one of them had duct tape around the toe. She had pulled her hair up into a messy bun. She was in desperate need of new everything, but she was still the most incredible thing in the world to me. I stood pulling out the chair next to me for her to join us at the table. I started piling food onto a plate for her. She didn’t say anything, but I saw a small, surprised smile. “So, where should we start?” Kennealy asked, looking at mom. “We?” Fae asked looking up at him. “Oh yes. I’m coming along for this one. We’re gonna have a blast.” “You want to watch me buy a couple outfits?” Fae clearly hadn’t expected an entourage. Kennealy laughed. “Oh no honey. We’ll be buying way more than that.”
