Chapter 1 The Night Everything Changed
The night my parents died, it rained. Not the soft kind of rain that made the streets shine beneath the city lights. It came down violently, pounding against the windows as if the sky itself was trying to break into our home. I was twenty years old. And that night, I lost everything. I remember sitting on the edge of my bed, staring at my phone while the clock moved past midnight. My mother had promised she would call when they arrived at the hotel. She never did. Neither did my father. My parents traveled often. They had businesses, meetings, dinners with people I barely knew. Being unreachable for a few hours wasn’t unusual. But then my phone rang. One call. A number I didn’t recognize. I answered without thinking. “Hello?” There was silence on the other end. Then a man’s voice. “Are you their daughter?” Something inside me tightened. “Yes. Who is this?” Another pause. “I’m sorry.” Those two words changed my life. By the time I reached the hospital, my mother’s body had already been covered. My father was in another room. The police told me it was a car accident. Rain. Slippery roads. Loss of control. A terrible tragedy. They said it so many times that eventually the words stopped sounding real. “Your parents’ vehicle left the road.” “There’s no evidence of another car.” “It appears to have been an accident.” That was what everyone called it. But I knew my parents. My father never drove recklessly, especially in bad weather. My mother was cautious about everything. They had been married for twenty-four years and had survived business rivals, financial problems, and countless difficult situations. They weren’t careless people. And yet, somehow, both of them had died on the same night. Three months later, I found the first c***k in their story. It was hidden inside my father’s study. I had been sorting through documents because I was preparing to sell the house. I couldn’t stand living there anymore. Every room reminded me of them. His desk had been left almost untouched since his death. That afternoon, while searching through a drawer, I found an envelope. There was no name on it. No address. Only a single sentence written across the front. If anything happens to us, don’t trust the police. My hands went cold. I opened it. Inside was a photograph. A man stood beside my father outside a building I didn’t recognize. The photograph was old, perhaps a year or two. My father looked serious. The other man looked younger, but there was something about him that made my stomach twist. He wasn’t smiling. He was staring directly at the camera. On the back of the photograph, my father had written three words. Zack Alexander. I had heard the name before. Everyone had. Zack Alexander was thirty-nine, one of the most powerful billionaires in the country. His companies owned hotels, technology firms, private investments, and several businesses I couldn’t even understand. He rarely appeared in public. When he did, newspapers called him ruthless. Untouchable. Dangerous. I had never met him. Until that photograph. I searched his name that night. Article after article appeared. Business deals. Charity events. Luxury properties. Political connections. Rumors. There were stories about competitors who suddenly disappeared from the market after crossing him. Stories about companies that collapsed after refusing his offers. Nothing was ever proven. But one article caught my attention. Five years earlier, Zack Alexander had been involved in a business dispute with my father. The article was short. Most of it was about money. But at the bottom, there was one sentence that made my heart stop. The disagreement between Alexander and businessman Daniel Hale reportedly ended after a private settlement. Daniel Hale. My father. I read the sentence again. Then again. My father had never told me about Zack. Not once. I stayed awake until morning. By sunrise, my grief had changed into something else. Suspicion. For the first time since my parents’ deaths, I wasn’t crying. I was angry. If Zack had nothing to do with their deaths, then why had my father hidden his photograph? Why had he written that warning? And why had the police never mentioned the business dispute? I started digging. At first, I found almost nothing. Information about Zack was everywhere, but information about his personal life was almost impossible to find. No interviews about his family. No details about his childhood. No photographs of his parents. Nothing meaningful. It was as if he had built his entire life behind a locked door. And the more I searched, the more convinced I became that the door was hiding something. Six months passed. I sold my parents’ house. I kept their money untouched. I stopped answering calls from people who wanted to tell me to move on. And I built a plan. It wasn’t a good plan. It wasn’t safe. But it was the only one I had. If Zack Alexander knew something about my parents, I needed to get close to him. Not as a detective. Not as an enemy. As someone he wouldn’t suspect. Someone he might allow into his world. Someone he would underestimate. I knew what people would think. They would call me desperate. Shameless. Maybe they would be right. But I had already lost the two people who mattered most to me. I wasn’t afraid of losing my reputation. I was afraid of never knowing the truth. Two weeks later, I stood outside the entrance of the Alexander Tower. The building rose above the city like a wall of glass and steel. I stared at the top floors. Somewhere up there was Zack Alexander. The man whose name had been hiding inside my father’s study. The man who might know why my parents were dead. I tightened my grip around my bag. “Just get inside,” I whispered to myself. The receptionist looked up when I approached. “Can I help you?” She checked her computer. “Your name?” I gave it. Her expression changed slightly. She looked at me, then back at the screen. “Sorry. I don’t seen an appointment.” “I was told to come directly.” “By whom?” I smiled. “His assistant.” It was a lie. A dangerous one. She hesitated, then made a phone call. My heart pounded while I waited. After a few minutes, she hung up. “Twenty-sixth floor.” I thanked her and walked toward the elevator. Every step felt like I was walking deeper into something I might never escape. When the elevator doors opened on the twenty-sixth floor, a man in a dark suit was waiting. “Mr. Alexander is expecting you.” I almost laughed. He wasn’t. But apparently, someone had decided to let me through. The assistant led me down a quiet hallway and stopped outside a large black door. He knocked once. A deep voice answered. “Come in.” The door opened. And I saw him. Zack Alexander stood beside the floor-to-ceiling windows, his back partially turned toward me. He was taller than I expected. Dressed in a perfectly fitted black suit, he looked completely at home in the enormous office surrounding him. He didn’t look like a man who had ever been told no. She turned. His eyes met mine. Cold. Sharp. Unwelcoming. For several seconds, neither of us spoke. Then his gaze moved slowly over me. Not with admiration. With suspicion. “Who are you?” My throat tightened. I had imagined this moment hundreds of times. I had prepared answers. Excuses. Stories. But standing in front of him, I suddenly understood something. Zack Alexander wasn’t a man you could easily deceive. “I came to see you,” I said. “I can see that.” His voice was calm. Almost too calm. He walked toward his desk. “You lied to my receptionist.” I said nothing. “You don’t have an appointment.” “I know.” He stopped. For the first time, there was something almost like amusement in his expression. “Then why are you here?” I looked directly into his eyes. Because you may have killed my parents. Because I found your name in my father’s secret files. Because I won’t stop until I know the truth. But I couldn’t say any of that. Instead, I gave him the answer I had rehearsed. “Because I believe you can give me something I need.” His expression hardened. “And what exactly do you think I can give you?” I took a slow breath. “An opportunity.” He studied me for a long moment. Then he leaned back against his desk. “You have five minutes.” Five minutes. It wasn’t much. But it was enough. Because I hadn’t come there expecting Zack Alexander to welcome me. I had come prepared to make him curious. And I had one advantage he didn’t know about. I already knew his name. I knew his connection to my father. And I knew that somewhere behind all that money and power was a secret. I intended to find it.
