Determined to discover Vanessa's true character, Margaret secretly watches how her future daughter-in-law treats people when she thinks nobody important is watching.

But the test takes a terrifying turn when Margaret overhears Vanessa discussing a secret plan that could destroy the entire Carter family.

The woman in the uniform
The mansion stood on the highest hill in the city, surrounded by black iron gates, perfectly trimmed gardens, and enough security cameras to make anyone feel watched. Inside, everything glittered. Crystal chandeliers hung from the ceilings. Marble floors reflected the golden lights. Expensive paintings covered the walls. And in the middle of it all stood Daniel Carter, one of the youngest millionaires in the country. At thirty-two, Daniel owned hotels, apartments, restaurants, and a technology company that had recently made him one of the most talked-about businessmen in the city. But despite his success, there was one thing his mother couldn't understand. His choice of a wife. Her name was Vanessa Reed. Beautiful. Elegant. Educated. And, according to Daniel, perfect. His mother, Margaret Carter, wasn't convinced. Margaret had spent forty years building the Carter family fortune with her late husband. She had seen people smile at her while secretly calculating what they could gain from her wealth. She had learned one lesson very well: Money can attract love, but it can also attract very convincing actors. Three months earlier, Daniel had introduced Vanessa to her. "Mother," he had said proudly, "this is the woman I'm going to marry." Vanessa had smiled warmly. "It's an honour to finally meet you, Mrs. Carter." Margaret had smiled back. But something about Vanessa's eyes bothered her. Not because they were cruel. Because they were too carefully controlled. That evening, Margaret asked Daniel privately, "Do you really know this woman?" Daniel laughed. "Of course I do." "You've known her for eight months." "Eight months is enough when you know what you want." Margaret sighed. "Sometimes people show you exactly what you want to see." Daniel's expression hardened. "Mother, Vanessa isn't interested in my money." Margaret looked at him for a long moment. "Then you shouldn't be afraid of me testing that." Daniel frowned. "What do you mean?" "Nothing." She smiled. But inside, Margaret had already made a decision. She would find out who Vanessa really was. Two weeks later, Margaret sold her elegant black Mercedes to a trusted employee. She stopped wearing designer clothes. She removed her expensive jewellery. She even changed her hairstyle. Then she rented a small room in an old neighbourhood across town. For three days, she practiced walking with a slight limp. She learned how to speak like someone who had worked in wealthy homes for years. Finally, she put on a simple grey uniform. She looked at herself in the mirror. The woman staring back at her no longer looked like Margaret Carter, one of the wealthiest women in the city. She looked like an ordinary middle-aged housekeeper. Her new name was Martha. And she was about to enter her son's mansion. "You're late." The head housekeeper, Mrs. Lewis, looked Margaret up and down. Margaret lowered her eyes. "I'm sorry, ma'am. The bus broke down." "Whatever. We don't have time for excuses." Mrs. Lewis handed her a list. "Your duties are simple. Clean the guest rooms, polish the silverware, help in the kitchen, and stay out of Mr. Carter's private office." Margaret nodded. "Yes, ma'am." "And one more thing." Mrs. Lewis leaned closer. "The young lady of the house doesn't like servants asking questions." Margaret's heart skipped. "Young lady?" "Mr. Carter's fiancée. Miss Vanessa." Margaret nodded slowly. "I understand." Mrs. Lewis walked away. Margaret looked around the mansion. She had designed half of it. She knew which paintings were worth millions. She knew where the original wine cellar was. She knew a hidden staircase existed behind the library. Yet nobody recognized her. For the first time in decades, Margaret Carter was invisible. And she liked it. That evening, the front doors opened. Vanessa walked into the mansion wearing a cream-coloured dress and carrying several shopping bags. Two assistants followed behind her. "Put those in my room," Vanessa ordered. One assistant hesitated. "Miss Reed, those are quite heavy." Vanessa looked at her coldly. "I didn't ask if they were heavy." The assistant quickly carried the bags upstairs. Margaret watched silently from the hallway. Interesting. A few minutes later, Daniel arrived. Vanessa immediately changed. Her cold expression disappeared. She ran toward him. "Daniel!" He smiled and hugged her. "Hey, beautiful." "I missed you." Margaret almost laughed. The transformation was remarkable. Vanessa kissed Daniel's cheek. Then she noticed Margaret standing nearby. Her smile disappeared. "Who is that?" Daniel looked over. "Oh. That's Martha. She's new." Vanessa studied Margaret from head to toe. "New?" "Yes." Vanessa walked closer. "How old are you?" Margaret lowered her head. "Fifty-two, ma'am." Vanessa frowned. "Can you actually keep up with the work?" "I'll try my best." Vanessa smiled. It wasn't a friendly smile. "Trying isn't enough in this house." Margaret remained silent. Vanessa turned toward Daniel. "Your mother should have hired better staff." Daniel laughed. "Vanessa, be nice." "I'm only saying the truth." Then Vanessa walked upstairs. Margaret watched her disappear. Something had already changed. Margaret's suspicions were no longer suspicions. They were warnings. The real test came the following morning. Margaret was cleaning the dining room when Vanessa entered. "Where's my breakfast?" Margaret turned. "Breakfast?" "Yes. Daniel likes his breakfast at eight. I told the kitchen yesterday." "It's eight-thirty." Vanessa's eyes narrowed. "So?" Margaret quietly replied, "I'm sorry, ma'am. I'll check." She turned to leave. Vanessa suddenly grabbed a glass from the table and deliberately knocked it onto the floor. CRASH! The glass shattered. Margaret froze. Vanessa pointed at the broken pieces. "Clean it." Margaret looked at her. "I'm sorry?" "You heard me." "But there are broken pieces. You could hurt yourself." Vanessa folded her arms. "I didn't ask for advice." Margaret knelt down and began collecting the glass. As she did, one sharp piece cut her finger. Blood appeared. Vanessa looked at it. She didn't apologize. Instead, she said, "Be more careful next time." Margaret slowly raised her eyes. For a moment, their eyes met. Vanessa saw nothing but submission. She smiled. Margaret lowered her head again. But inside, something had changed. She had raised Daniel to respect every human being, regardless of their social position. Now the woman who claimed to love her son was deliberately humiliating someone she believed was powerless. Margaret silently picked up the final piece of glass. Then Vanessa walked away. She didn't see the expression on Margaret's face. A mother had entered her son's mansion disguised as a maid. But she was no longer simply testing a future daughter-in-law. She was beginning to discover a secret that could destroy the wedding. That night, Margaret was cleaning the upstairs hallway when she heard voices coming from Vanessa's bedroom. She stopped. The door wasn't completely closed. Vanessa was talking on the phone. "Don't worry," she whispered. Margaret moved closer. "When I marry Daniel, everything will be mine." Margaret's eyes widened. Then Vanessa said something that made her blood run cold. "But there's one problem." A pause. "His mother." Margaret stopped breathing. Vanessa continued. "Margaret Carter doesn't trust me." Another pause. Then Vanessa laughed. "That's why she needs to disappear before the wedding." Margaret's hand tightened around the cleaning cloth. She had expected to discover greed. She had expected manipulation. She had never expected murder. Then Vanessa suddenly turned toward the door. "Who's there?" Margaret's heart pounded. Footsteps approached. The door handle began to turn. And Margaret realized she had only seconds to hide.
