Geneva cursed in silence. "Did this devil recognise me? Can't he wait to embarrass me?... or is he testing my patience? Did he really think I won't dare?"
"Turn around!" Chen Lei said in a commanding tone.
Geneva straightened up, breathed, and turned around expressionlessly. Her left brow curved up as she asked coldly, "Need something?"
Chen Lei slightly looked back and tilted his head at her. With a face that was as stern as stone, everyone couldn't help but hold their breaths. In the eyes of some, they were expecting a show while the few were worried for Geneva's pitiful life..
Who would she be to offend the big devil? She might be tired of living.
Chen Lei hadn't done something physically, yet, his gaze had already made others feel he was sending them to their death.
"Such strong hostility… hmm," Chen Lei nodded and faced away. "You got some backbone, huh?"
"Ahahaha, President Chen, you're here!" To smoothen the cold tension between the two opposing strangers who were supposedly unfamiliar to each other in the onlookers eyes, CEO Aquino quickly made his existence noticed in front of the devil. He was clasping his hands as he smiled widely at him. "President, forgive us for not attending you at the entrance. But, our banquet today was blessed to have your presence."
CEO Aquino looked passed through Chen Lei's shoulder and gestured to Geneva to not provoke the devil through his eyes. Not only was he concerned for Geneva's life, but also he cared a lot about the two as they both have significance in their company, especially the devil.
Geneva sighed and quietly made her way to the washroom. The truth was, while she was walking away, hidden behind her cold face was a raging anger. She could only muster all her will not to kick the man's face.
Alyssa Curtis's beautiful face overtook with worry as she watched Geneva leave. She wanted to comfort him but how should she do that if she didn't know what's the problem between them. If they really have such a feud or if it was just a coincidence that both of their moods opposed each other.
Alyssa Curtis sighed gloomily and sipped a glass of wine.
The appearance of the President didn't do much to explode some twist to the event. Only women's eyes were spoiled by his indescribable looks who couldn't leave their eyes off to him.
Chen Lei was used to such attention and so he didn't heed any care about it. He was just there to show himself not to mingle with random people.
He sat at the most VIP seat at the topmost center of table and every businessman tried to initiate a conversation with him. It began from flattering and ended up discussing project collaboration.
At the entire moment he was surrounded with people, he didn't say much. He sometimes nodded and hummed a small sound "emn" to give his response. There was even a trace of disinterest in his eyes.
Such reactions made them feel awkward and lost the confidence to boost their business abilities and company.
…
The banquet went on until very late at night. As a loner, Geneva chose to get a room. She wanted to take a cold shower as she felt uncomfortable all over her body. She looked around only to find that the person she avoided during the entire time disappeared.
Her face wrinkled in frustration. She didn't know why she felt that way. She just felt that she wanted to see him at the moment. Unlike earlier, she avoided him like plague just like how he openly treated her like air.
They acted as strangers but now her heart was aching because of it. Her heart felt a tinge of emptiness and regret when she thought he didn't even try to speak with her.
"What is he being proud about?" Geneva mumbled inwardly. "Is he expecting me to initiate a conversation? Hell of him!"
Geneva held her head and closed her eyes, rubbing her temples.
"Brother Xander, are you okay?" Alyssa Curtis came over and looked at him worriedly. "You don't look good. Do you want me to send you to your room?"
Geneva opened her eyes and stared at Alyssa Curtis. The latter looked down and blushed because of her gaze. She tried to appear natural in front of her, but Geneva could tell how nervous she was.
Alyssa Curtis's forehead was covered with perspiration and she would not even dare to meet her eyes. Her fists on her sides clenched tightly without her knowing because of anxiety.
Geneva knew that Alyssa Curtis did something wrong every time she acted like that. Alyssa Curtis's act was almost flawless but it couldn't mess with Geneva's sharp and observative gaze.
Geneva was not an i***t. From what she currently felt, at the time she went into the washroom, she could confirm that Alyssa Curtis put something in her wine.
Geneva felt an incoming headache. She pressed her brows together.
What Alyssa Curtis did was wrong but she couldn't bring herself to scold her. From the beginning, she was aware of Alyssa Curtis's feelings towards her but what could she do? She didn't mean to deceive her but disguising as a man was her best option to stay safe and move freely without the certain person recognising her presence.
Her purpose to have this disguise was to deceive Chen Lei. She never wished him to recognise her after she returned to the country.
"Alright, send me to my room." Geneva finally gave in. Of course, she had no plan to invite Alyssa Curtis inside her room.
Alyssa Curtis secretly celebrated. She held Geneva's elbow and made their way to the room. After several turns in the hallway, Geneva suddenly stopped outside her room and spoke, refusing to let the woman enter with her, "Miss Curtis, just send me until here. It's already late. You should go and rest too." She tapped Alyssa Curtis's shoulder and winked at her, grinning, "Having enough rest is good for your skin."
"But—"
"No buts." Geneva gently pushed Alyssa Curtis away. "Go. It's not good for a man and a woman to stay in a place alone."
"I don't mind it."
"I mind." Geneva waved her hand when Alyssa Curtis tried to hold her again. "You're my artist. I can't let you have scandals with anyone , including myself. Since work is done, go and sleep in your room. I'm tired. I need to rest too. Goodnight!"
"But you are—" Alyssa Curtis blocked her arm when Geneva was about to shut the door, and so the latter stopped immediately in fear to injure her.
"I'm fine. I'm just drunk. Don't worry." Geneva patiently said.
"Are you sure?" Alyssa Curtis examined her from head to toe. "You are clearly uncomfortable. Maybe I can help?"
Geneva's brow curved up. "Help me? How are you going to help me?"
"I—"
Geneva sighed. She wanted to tell her that she was aware of her intention but she chose to just pretend ignorant. She didn't want her to feel awkward when they faced each other in the future. "Miss Curtis, I appreciate your kindness. But I really don't need it. Be good. Go and sleep."
Alyssa Curtis lowered her head dejectedly. "Fine. I will leave. Just call me if you need anything."
"I will." Geneva smiled. "I will see you off. Go."
Alyssa Curtis surrendered. Although she was confused why the drug didn't have much effect on Geneva, she left in fear to make the other person suspicious of her action.
When Alyssa Curtis's shadow was nowhere to be seen. Geneva's blazing eyes stared intently in a certain direction. Just at the edge of the hallway where she stood, she spotted the target entering the room.
"I finally found you." Geneva murmured and immediately sauntered towards the room with her unsteady steps. When she reached the room, without any delay, she raised her hand and knocked the door loudly. As if it was her enemy and wanted to destroy it.
