Chapter 1: The Future Alpha
"Wait, a boarding student?" Mona raised an eyebrow, looking skeptical as she glanced at her parents. On the day before heading off to school like any other day, Mona's parents wore smiles as they watched her leave the house. But today, they dropped a bombshell on her. "We'll be hosting a boarding student starting next week." "He's a student from another pack, temporarily transferred here. He's two years older than you, but you're close in age. You two can be friends definitely!" Her mother ventured with a tone of matter-of-fact as if trying to prevent Mona from getting too suspicious and asking too many questions. Her mother placed her hands on Mona's shoulders and gently pushed her out the door. "You better hurry or you'll be late. Remember how Mr. Nate goes on for an hour if someone arrives late? Your ears will be buzzing like flies." Slipping into her worn-out shoes and grabbing her backpack filled with books, Mona hurried towards the high school a few blocks away. During the short ten-minute journey, a nagging question lingered in her mind, growing louder with each step. What the heck was going on? None of the schools in their pack had dormitories, since all the students were descendants of the Riverrun Pack. They had their own families and homes. Mona had never heard of exchange students from other packs, let alone her parents taking one in. Besides, her parents were highly respected warriors in the Riverrun Pack, responsible for training adult werewolves in martial arts and tactics. They weren't some kind of omegas tasked with babysitting and housework. Why would they agree to host a boarding student? As Mona ran and pondered, she couldn't make sense of it all. When she arrived at the classroom on time, she decided to push aside her distracting thoughts. She casually stuffed her schoolbag into the drawer and immediately switched to a serious and quiet mode, pretending she had arrived well in advance to avoid being caught by Mr. Nate, who was right behind her. "I thought you were going to be late!" Clare, her best friend, leaned over her desk between classes, teasingly remarking, "Mona, how do you manage to arrive at the last minute every time?" "Guess what?" Mona playfully ruffled Clare's beautiful caramel-colored curls. "I guess my feet run with clock-like precision." Clare pulled her hair out of Mona's hands and complained, "Stop playing with my natural curls. My hair is a mess every morning when I wake up. I envy your long, naturally smooth black hair. It's like thick seaweed." "But you look so cute when you shift into a wolf! And I..." Mona's emerald eyes dimmed suddenly. Would she ever have a wolf? Most pack members shifted around thirteen or fourteen years old, but Mona, now sixteen, hadn't shown any signs of shifting yet. She was the only one among her peers who hadn't transformed. "I'm sorry, Mona. I didn't mean to upset you," Clare said, sensing Mona's change in mood. "You're just a late bloomer! Your parents were great warriors in the pack, and the Moon Goddess will surely bless you with the most amazing wolf!" Mona forced a smile, despite hearing similar comforting words and examples of pack members who shifted into wolves when they were nearly adults from her parents and friends. They reassured her that shifting into a wolf form at her age was common in their pack, so there was no need to be anxious. But privately she discovered that only three individuals had done so after turning seventeen. Mr. Nate's lengthy geography lesson went unnoticed as Mona's mind wandered, worrying about being the first anomaly in her family of warriors without a wolf form. She daydreamed about how she would give those bullies who had stuffed frogs into her locker and tripped her down with their legs a lesson once she had her own wolf. She would show them what a fierce wolf she was! As the bell rang, Otto rushed from the other side of the classroom and cheerfully announced lunchtime, "Ladies, please move with me to the central cafeteria." He was a popular 14-year-old accelerated student, adored by most of the class for his tiny figure and baby face. Mona and Clare considered him like a brother. The trio walked together towards the central cafeteria, amused by Otto's quirky nature. Not far away, a handsome young man in a sleek black suit with curly hair and smiling eyes caught Mona's attention. "Ms. Moore, please wait!" he called out. They turned to see Beta David of the pack leaning against a discreet yet luxurious black limousine. Clare held Mona back, puzzled by Beta's interest in her. "It's Beta David! Why is he looking for you?" "I don't know. I've never had any personal contact with him," Mona whispered, not wanting Clare to misunderstand her intentions because she knew Clare had a bit of a crush on Beta. David approached and revealed his purpose. "Ms. Moore, Alpha has requested your presence at the Packhouse." "Why does he want to see me? I have classes after lunch..." Mona started, concerned about her schedule. "I'm only following Alpha's orders," David replied, glancing at Clare and Otto, "Your parents are there too. Maybe your friends can take a leave of absence instead of you." Mona tensed up, fearing something terrible had happened to her parents. "Are my parents okay?" Beta read her concern, "Your parents are safe and sound, it's Alpha who has something important for you. You had better come with me now." Mona looked at her worried friends and bid them a quick farewell before hurrying after Beta. The car left the campus, and Mona tried to pry for information. Beta's expression remained unreadable as he simply mentioned, "It's related to intertribal matters. You'll find out when we reach the packhouse." Slowly pushing open the thick, fancy, all-white door of the packhouse, Mona's heart started racing as she wondered what awaited her inside. In the dining hall, with a white base and gold accents, her parents were comfortably seated at the long dining table, chatting and laughing. Mona's worries vanished instantly when she saw her unharmed parents. She let out a sigh of relief and smiled as she walked towards Alpha to respectfully greet him. It was then that she noticed a good-looking young man sitting next to Alpha, looking at her. He had short black hair that looked fresh and stylish, with shaved sides near his temples. His face was well-sculpted and had brilliant golden eyes that drew people in, along with a charming smile on his lips. Gradually, she realized that he resembled someone from her past, but his tall and strong physique under his casual shirt indicated that he had grown into a mature man. This made her feel a mix of embarrassment and unfamiliarity. His name was Felix Bonner, and even though she hadn't seen him in almost ten years, she recognized him immediately. "Felix wasn't supposed to be back until next week. I didn't realize he was arriving this morning," Alpha said with a smile. "That's why I asked your family to come over to the Packhouse so suddenly, to have a reunion." Felix was the only son of Riverrun Pack's Alpha. Ten years ago, during a time of conflict among the packs on the Werewolf Continent, Alpha, his Beta, and Gamma were busy maintaining stability. Mona's father, being the best warrior in the pack, was tasked with leading patrols along the border under Alpha's orders. Meanwhile, her mother was responsible for protecting and training Felix, who was Alpha's precious son. This is where Mona and Felix's connection began. Back then, Felix lived next to her house for six months and received strict training from her mother every day. Despite being a mischievous little kid, Felix never showed impatience and often played family and marriage role-playing games with Mona during breaks. He would even cook for her and tuck her into bed, acting as a capable and caring older brother. Their luna was the daughter of the Alpha of Blue Ice Pack, a well-known pack on the Werewolf Continent, where the location was a natural choke point and the werewolves' pack were much larger in size. Considering that the current turbulent situation could not be calmed down in a short time, in order to give Felix a safer life and a better education, six months later, Luna decided to send her son to live in her original pack. Her father would have more energy and time to teach his grandson how to become a strong alpha. Mona remembered their hurried goodbye, which left her feeling sad for a while. She longed for Felix to come back and play with her. So, she was pleasantly surprised and overjoyed to be unexpectedly reunited with him now. At that moment, Felix approached her in a polished manner, extending his arms for an overly enthusiastic hug. "It's been a long time, Mona," he said warmly. As she found herself enveloped by his broad chest, Mona's head passively rested against his neck, catching a whiff of his cologne mixed with his own masculine scent. Although she couldn't sense pheromones or be affected by them, the closeness she had never experienced with the opposite s*x caused a rush of warmth to wash over her. She had to delicately position her hands at a safe distance from him, blushing and lifting her gaze to greet him, "Hey Felix." Felix caressed her hair and sighed, "The little girl has finally become a lady." "Look at these two kids!" The elders smiled approvingly at this moment, "They must be missing each other." "Puppy, you must remember Felix. You used to play together when you were kids!" Seeing her puzzled expression, her father introduced, "Now that the situation on the Continent has stabilized somewhat, our alpha believes it's time to bring Felix back from Blue Ice Pack to assume the leadership position. He will be our next alpha by the time of the inauguration ceremony on the night of the full moon next month." "Really? Congratulations!" She said sincerely. "We're just so happy for you," her mother expressed her hopes for Felix's future, "I hope you'll use your acquired tactics and strength to lead our pack towards growth and prosperity." Her playmate of childhood had returned and was about to become the ALPHA of their pack! With so much information to process, she couldn't recall the taste of the dishes during lunch. It felt like a dream, and by the time she got home from school and went to bed, it was as if she hadn't reacted to it all. The next morning, Felix suddenly called her, greeting her gently and chatting in a familiar tone as if he had never left. She stumbled through a few of his questions. "It's almost time. I won't interfere with your lessons," Felix said firmly at the end of the call, "Puppy, Beta will pick you up and bring you to the packhouse for lunch with me every day at noon, so we can spend more time together. See you later, okay?" Before she could think it over, the call ended, and as she listened to the regular beeping in her ear, a mix of surprise, anticipation, and nervousness stirred in her heart.
