Author's Pov
Zach watched as she stares at the sky. Her gaze sad and lost. She reminded him of a puppy waiting for their owner to return. The longing in her eyes screamed a thousand words that only the purest of heart could hear. Unfortunately, he didn’t have a heart. His body was void of it, empty and cold. This girl held beauty in her hand, and they dances elegantly along her finger tips. She was capitulating, the prettiest swan he’s ever seen. And he’s encountered many of those. She had a long lasting effect. He wonders what awaits the both of them in the coming future. But that thought doesn’t linger long enough. Because I’m the end of the day, they would part ways and never encounter each other again. So he relishes the moment he has with her. He knows he won’t stay too long.
“What are you thinking about?” It’s a whisper he knows she can’t hear. When he glides to where she is, his soft steps echo the room. The light from the moon cascades down her exposed skin, showing off the smoothness of it. Captivating. A work of art. Words do her no justice. What in earth has she done to him?
Again. She can’t hear him.
Zach stops relight beside her and glances at the direction she’s looking at. A big bright moon is what he sees. Magical and glowing.
It’s different with her room. Which is dark and gloomy. She’s the same. He doesn’t need to know what emotions are. Because through those windows of the soul, he was given a hint of what these emotions feels like.
Quite fascinating. How she’s mesmerized by night’s source of light. Like her, it appear elegant. Like her name, the moon was shaped like a pearl. It’s seems like the deeper you did, the more treasure you find. “You’re a moon gazer uh? Didn’t take you as the type.” He lets his thought pour out in a soft whisper. But there’s more. Dang it. His mind’s running and crashing. Like two waves that meet together to created an event others find enjoyable. His eyes trail from sky to her eyes- at least where he suspects her eyes to be at. Her hair’s in the way. He wants to drag it away. He wants to gaze at her beauty properly. But watching her sleep is as close as he’ll ever get to her.
He hears her distant sigh, gaze still fixated on the moon. Her sigh felt heavy, filled with tension and something he can’t understand. Humans emotions have always been a difficult topic to tackle. They don’t make sense.
Zach eventually glances down on the screen when she does too. And he blanches.
The mark of the beast wasn’t so far behind. Sometimes, they come in a shape of a homework or assignment.
She had to answer that. He may not have any memories of his past, but he knows for a fact that essays aren’t his thing.
She isn’t typing anything though. Barely started.
Is she gonna get this done tonight?
“You better not pull an all nighter Pearl. Your eye bag’s literally the size of your eyes now.” He warns softly despite knowing his words wouldn’t reach her.
Pearl had pouty pink lips and a button nose. Her eyes are slightly narrow, like a feline. The energy she sheds is almost similar to tiger for some reason though.
He's noticed that she likes talking to herself. Every now and then, she'd look up too. Whenever that would happen, the burning suspiciousness within the young cupid only seems to heighten. I mean yeah, he's been clumsy, knocking some of her stuff down and here and there. At this point, he won't be surprised if she comes to the conclusion that her place's hunted.
After following her today, Zach could tell she’s picky when it comes to people she wants to be friends with. She doesn't have a lot. There's Vaeri- who's very close to her. And just also happened to be Harper's client. Then Stell- the guy she's supposed to be with. A frown makes itself comfortable on the young cupid's lips before he can even process it.
He suddenly blinks his eyes, processing what he's done. While staring at Pearl’s face, his hand had moved on its own.
He had just tucked her hair behind her ear without thinking. What the heck have I done?
They both freeze, taking the time to process.
“Oh crap.” Zach utters before pulling himself away as if he had been electrocuted. He stares at his hand, still in shock. Then he stares at Pearl. He's breathing like he's ran a marathon.
What the hell just happened?
He thinks to himself. Although it’s been a couple of years since he’s been a Cupid, not once has something like this ever happened.
Cupids are like spirits. Ghost. They shouldn’t be able to come in contact with anything matter. The come and go.
So how on earth was he able to touch her? The pen moving and falling was only natural since although unseen to the human eye, they're structure is similar to air. They're not seen but they can move things that are slightly less weighted. The pen was one thing but this is another.
By the time Zicharius finishes his inner turmoil, Pearl had already shut down her laptop and set it aside.
She was now under her covers, all fast asleep. Did he scare her? It's not like she would answer his question even if he asked her anyway. Zach swallows a lump down his throat.
It was lights out for her and Zach needed to head back to his own little abode in the other realm.
Zach looks around the room slowly as he rubs the back of his head.
Should he report this incident to HQ?
They might scold him for not following the rules. Which is to never come in contact with a human being.
Unable to come up with an answer, he rubs a hand down his face and walks out the door I’m confused misery.
Like humans, Cupids like him still needs a place to rest and recharge for the next given task. It's not easy following around someone after all.
Zacharius eventually enters his shared room with an exhausted sigh.
The silence of the room reminds him of Pearl.
“Why are you thinking about her?” He mutters to himself, sniffing his nose.
He then drags his fingers across his hair and ruffles them messily.
He drags his shadowless body over a cloud like door and enters a room he’s made comfortable for his own.
Another day’s gone by and tomorrow he’ll be busy yet again.
Zach collapses on the bed and stares at the stars. Unlike Pearl’s, cupids have no roof above their heads. Instead, they get to stare directly into the sky
His fingers rest gently above the surface of his chest as today’s events cross his mind like a movie.
And from what he’s seen so far, Pearl has no feelings for her best friend.
And he isn’t showing any interest either. Their relationship is purely platonic. This isn’t the first case he’s come across. He’s had a handful of tasks with the same situation. They all work out in the end.
Especially if he is in charge.
A figure walks through the cloud like door and it’s Zach’s roommate.
Harper lets out a yawn- showing how equally exhausted he is too. Without even sparing Zach a glance, he walks across the room to where there’s a desk standing.
“I forgot to grab my potions. I left it on your desk.” He says, seconds before grabbing said items and leaving.
Zach’s once again left by himself to stare at the sky filled with stars. Following a human can be exhausting.
Normally he’d get the job done in just a day. But this human seem to be different.
Either way, he’s looking forward tomorrow.
