Chapter One
Chapter One The smell of freshly brewed coffee filled the small café as Clara Bennett moved between tables, balancing a tray in one hand and a tired smile on her face. "Table six needs another cup of coffee," her coworker called from behind the counter. Clara nodded quickly. "I'll take care of it." She had been on her feet since early morning, but exhaustion was something she had learned to ignore. Life had taught her that there was no room for complaints when someone depended on her. At twenty-two years old, most people her age were worried about parties, vacations, and enjoying their youth. Clara was worried about rent, bills, tuition fees, and making sure there was enough food at home. But she didn't regret it. Not when everything she did was for the woman who had sacrificed everything for her. Her mother. The thought brought a small smile to her face. Mrs. Evelyn Bennett was the strongest woman Clara knew. After losing her husband years ago, Evelyn had raised Clara alone, taking on every hardship without letting her daughter see how difficult things were. Clara still remembered those nights when she was younger, waking up to find her mother sewing clothes by the dim light of their living room lamp. Whenever Clara asked if she was tired, her mother would simply smile and say, "A mother's strength comes from seeing her child succeed." Those words had stayed with Clara. They were the reason she worked hard. The reason she continued her studies despite financial struggles. The reason she never allowed herself to give up. "Clara, you're spacing out again." She blinked and looked up to see her coworker, Lily, standing in front of her with an amused expression. "Sorry," Clara laughed softly. "I was just thinking." "Thinking about your endless responsibilities, I'm sure." Clara smiled awkwardly. Lily knew her well. She knew Clara worked almost every free hour she had and still found time to study. "You should rest sometimes," Lily said. "I will," Clara promised. It was a promise she made often, even though she rarely kept it. After finishing her shift, Clara checked the time on her phone. She still had a few assignments to complete when she got home, and she wanted to call her mother before going to sleep. Her fingers moved across the screen, opening her mother's contact. She smiled at the picture beside the name. Her mother had taken it during one of their rare outings together. Evelyn was laughing brightly, her eyes filled with warmth. Clara missed those simple moments. The shrill ringing of Clara's phone cut through the constant chatter inside the café. She glanced at the screen, her fingers pausing halfway through wiping a table. Unknown Number. Normally, she would have ignored it. She was in the middle of her shift, and her manager hated personal calls during work hours. But something about the persistent ringing made her uneasy. "Clara!" her supervisor called from behind the counter. "Are you going to answer that or let it ring all day?" She forced a small smile and answered. "Hello?" A calm female voice came from the other end. "Am I speaking with Miss Clara?" "Yes." "This is Mercy General Hospital. Your mother, Mrs. Evelyn Carter, was involved in a road traffic accident about thirty minutes ago. She's stable for now, but you need to come immediately." The tray slipped from Clara's trembling hands. It hit the floor with a loud crash, drawing every eye in the café toward her. Her lips parted, but no sound came out. "...What?" "We need a family member here as soon as possible." The line disconnected. For several seconds, Clara stood frozen. No. This couldn't be happening. Not her mother. Not the only family she had left. "Clara?" Her supervisor rushed over. "What's wrong?" "My... my mum..." she whispered, already struggling to hold back tears. "She's in the hospital." Without waiting for permission, she untied her apron, grabbed her worn handbag, and ran out into the busy street. --- The taxi ride felt endless. Her hands wouldn't stop shaking. She kept praying under her breath. "Please let her be okay... Please don't take her away from me too." She had already buried one parent. She wasn't ready to lose another. By the time she reached the hospital, her heart was pounding so hard she could barely hear anything else. A doctor met her outside the emergency ward. "Miss Clara?" She nodded anxiously. "Your mother survived the accident, but she has multiple fractures and internal injuries. She requires emergency surgery." Clara let out a breath she hadn't realized she was holding. Alive. Her mother was alive. But the doctor's next words shattered that relief. "The surgery will cost more than you currently have on record. A deposit must be paid before we proceed." The figure he mentioned made her knees weaken. It was more money than she had ever seen in her life. "I... I don't have that kind of money," she whispered. "I'm sorry," the doctor replied gently. "Please do your best. Time is very important." --- After speaking with the doctor, allow Clara to see her mother through the ICU window. Her mother's head is wrapped in bandages. One arm is in a cast. Machines beep steadily around her. Clara presses a trembling hand against the glass. "Mum..." she whispered, tears slipping down her cheeks. "You promised we'd celebrate when I got a better job. You promised you wouldn't leave me." She remembered how her mother always skipped buying new clothes so Clara could pay her school fees. "I haven't repaid you yet," she choked out. "So please... don't give up on me now." --- Late that evening, Clara sat alone on a cold metal bench outside the hospital. She lowered herself onto the cold hospital bench, her legs too weak to keep her standing. The numbers the doctor had mentioned echoed endlessly in her mind. It was impossible. She had spent the last four years working every job she could find while attending college. Morning lectures, afternoon shifts at the café, weekend tutoring—she had done it all without complaint. After her father died from a heart attack six years ago, life had changed overnight. Her mother, Evelyn, had taken on every burden she could, sewing clothes late into the night just to keep food on the table and ensure Clara never had to abandon her education. "You'll have a better life than I did," her mother would always say with a tired smile. "Promise me you'll never stop chasing your dreams." Clara had promised. And she had kept that promise. Every achievement, every sleepless night, every paycheck she earned had been for the woman lying unconscious behind those hospital doors. Now, the one person who had sacrificed everything for her needed saving. But for the first time in her life, Clara didn't know if determination alone would be enough. She opens her banking app. Balance: $1,842.36 She counts the cash in her wallet. Just enough for transportation and meals for a few days. She scrolls through contacts, stopping at friends' names. One by one, she shakes her head. They were struggling too. Borrowing from them would only drag them into her nightmare. None of them earned much. A bank loan? She had no collateral. Working overtime? It would take years to raise the amount. Selling the tiny apartment she shared with her mother? It wasn't even theirs. She buried her face in her hands. "There has to be a way," she whispered to herself. "There has to be..." For the first time in years, Clara felt completely helpless. But giving up wasn't an option. Not while her mother was still fighting for her life. Before leaving the hospital corridor, Clara wipes her tears. "Crying won't save Mum." She pulls out a small notebook. On one page she writes: Apply for every available job. Ask for extra shifts. Sell my laptop if I have to. Find another source of income. She stares at the list. It doesn't come close to fifty thousand dollars. But it's a start.... She closes the notebook She slowly wiped away her tears and stood. If one job wasn't enough... Then she would find another. No matter how impossible it seemed. She would save her mother. Even if it meant sacrificing everything she had.
