Stephanie's POV
“You what?”
Donald asked, placing the documents I had given to him on the bed. He then got up from the bed subtly.
“Do-Donald”. I called stepping backwards. I knew where this was going.
“You want a divorce?”.
He asked and unbuckled his belt.
“Let's talk about this, Donald”. I told him, still stepping backwards. “It's been one year and a few months”. I told him.
“Is there someone else?”.
~What?
“No, no, there isn't. That's ridiculous”.
“Oh, you know what's ridiculous? You are requesting a divorce”. He said, flinging his belt away.
…one year and three months…
That's how long I've been in this unhappy marriage. I was a lonely married woman who never got any attention from her husband. I was starved of everything, not in the real sense because I didn't mean food, water or even luxury.
I was starved of things, especially happiness…pleasure.
I continued stepping backwards as Donald strode towards me.
Again, I was freaking scared of him. My throat became dry and swallowing my saliva was painful. I turned and dashed for the door but he caught my wrist before I could start the escape.
“Running away from your husband?”
I quickly shook my head in refusal and he drew me closer to himself. My heart was plummeting and my head started spinning.
He continued speaking and kept going on and on. My ears were bleeding from the earful he was giving me. I tried to slip away from his hold but he held my wrists firmly and kept me in place.
I looked up at him, his blue eyes were piercing like they were boring a hole in my soul. My head kept spinning round and I started overthinking things.
Father was supposed to be alive. Mother was supposed to be discharged from the hospital and she was meant to be completely fine. And I…I was supposed to be with someone I loved.
“I want to forget everything”. I murmured looking in space as I tried to release my wrist from his grip. It was hurting badly because his grip was too tight and painful.
“What?”.
I heard him ask and look down at me. I turned to look him in the eye. I wanted to feel less lonely.
“I want to forget everything, I'm over thinking things and I want you to help me”.
He seemed confused and I didn't give him room to understand before I tip-toed and pecked his lips. I don't know why I did that though.
He let me go and I turned to walk away but he spun me around and captured my lips in a kiss. I felt too weak to resist so I let him kiss me, I let him touch me and I let him do ‘Everything to me’
•••
I woke up the next day and slowly sat upright and stretched looking around the room with squinted eyes. Once my sight became normal, I looked round the room only to remember whose room I was in.
“Donald?”.
Fragments of the previous night started coming to mind bit by bit and I put the pieces together to complete the puzzle. I gasped and threw a hand over my lips.
“I slept with him”.
I quickly threw my feet to step down from the bed when I caught sight of a written note on the lamp stand.
~It didn't mean anything.
Just to be clear.
“It didn't mean anything”. I repeated with my eyes closed as I tried to hold back tears. I was vulnerable with him but he…he completely disregarded my dignity and submission.
…it was a mistake, I shouldn't have, I wouldn't have done that…
With a pounding heart in my chest, I let my shaky hands drop the note back on the lamp stand as I stood to my feet and grabbed a robe at the edge of the bed and slid it on.
I walked out of his room and went to mine, I needed to freshen up, get dressed and go visit mother.
•••
I walked out of my room a few minutes later and went down the stairs. I saw a few men in suits standing guard around and I became confused.
“Good morning, Ma’lady”.
Sancho approached me.
“Good morning”. I greeted back, still peering around at the men.
“Oh, Ma'lady, these men are your bodyguards. Apparently, the boss hired them to look after you”.
~Talk about holding someone captive and restricting their freedom~
“Why?”. I asked Sancho but I was sure he wouldn't know what Donald was thinking nor why he was doing this.
“But I would like to visit my mother”. I told Sancho.
“I'll get your driver then”. He simply said and walked away.
Minutes later, a man in a suit and sun shades walked to me.
“Good day, ma'am , I will be your driver from now on. Where shall I be taking you to?”.
“Hopkins Hospital”. I started simply and walked away.
The guards standing at the door stood in my way to block me and confusion was written all over my face.
“We deeply apologize ma’am, but the boss gave strict orders not to let you leave the house”.
I opened my mouth to speak but Sancho came and spoke before I could.
“The boss hired you to be her bodyguard. That means you follow her wherever she goes to”.
I looked at Sancho and he nodded his head. I smiled a little, mouthing ‘Thank you’ to him as he walked away.
The guards looked at each other before stepping aside and giving way for me to pass.
I walked out with the man that had introduced himself as my driver. He opened the back car door for me and I entered. As he rounded the car and also entered the car, another man in suit opened the passenger side and entered also.
Was this some sought of babysitting?
Why would a grown woman like me have a series of men following me around all in the name of watching over me?
I was quiet the entire ride as I kept watching the numbers of trees we passed. I only turned and looked around when the car came to a stop at the hospital's carpark. I could never forget it.
I quickly held onto the inside handle to open the door when the car was locked. My head quickly jolted to the driver and then to the guard.
“You don't open the car door yourself ma’am, I'll do it”. The guard said and got down from the car. Once he was out, I heard the driver unlock the car and the guard opened the door.
I walked out and started walking towards the building. I suddenly saw a car pass and park in the same place as where the driver had parked the car and more men came out and started following me behind.
I stopped abruptly as we entered the hospital and they all stopped too. I took a step and they also did. I looked around and everyone in the hospital was staring at us.
Okay, this was annoying.
I swiftly turned to them.
“Please can you wait outside? I have to see my mother”.
They all bowed at once. Then one of them spoke.
“We're afraid we can't do that ma’am”.
I mentally rolled my eyes.
~Of course, the boss gave strict orders to…
I sighed and turned walking away from them in a haste, I could also hear them following me behind hurriedly.
When I arrived in front of my mother's room door, I waited a while and just stood there trying to fight back the tears and regulate my heart beat.
I smiled.
“Mother, everything's fine with my marriage, I'm doing pretty well”. I rehearsed what to say to her once I was in.
With one last sigh,I held onto the door knob and turned it, the door opened slightly when I felt another hand on mine.
I turned to look at whoever it was.
“Step back ma’am”. The guard said and I felt moved behind a little. “We have to check the room before you enter”.
This was pure madness.
“It's my mother in there”. I muttered, feeling myself get risen to the peak of anger. I took a step but a guard placed his hand stopping me from entering.
I threw him a look but he didn't budge. Soon, the other guards were about to come out of the room so I threw the guards hand and walked inside the room.
Once they were out, I locked the door behind me.
I turned slowly and walked wearily to my mother. As I got closer to her bed, I looked at her from head to toe and almost burst into tears, I quickly went to sit beside her.
“Mother”. I whispered and placed my hand over hers. “It's your daughter, Stephanie. How are you doing?”.
I swallowed and squeezed her hand just a little.
“I miss you”. I whispered. “I need you mother, please get well soon, it's been a year and three months”.
I got up and bent halfway to look at her face. I looked around her face and smiled. It was a sad smile though.
“Look at this beautiful woman, what is she still doing laying like a weak woman in this hospital bed?”. I asked and cupped her cheeks with the palm of my hand.
“Your daughter is…”. I swallowed as tears welled up in my eyes. “... she's fine, mother. She's doing alright…”.
I couldn't help it, the tears started flowing freely from my eyes and I sat down and placed my forehead on her hand as I let myself cry a river.
Mother was here with me so I was alright. Just her presence was consoling enough. I let myself shed all the pain I was feeling out.
I sniffed and raised my head up.
“Mother, please come back to me. I…”
“Ma’am”. I heard the guards knock ferociously on the door. “Times up”.
I wiped the tears from my face, feeling anger I felt earlier in return. I removed sun shades from my handbag and put it on.
~Captive much.
I thought.
I turned a deaf ear to them and got up to cup mother's cheeks with my palm once more and I placed a kiss on her forehead when the door bursts open.
The guards rushed to me and held me away from her.
What insolence was this?
“Let go of me”. I yelled and yanked my arm away from their grip. I went to touch my mother's hand once more. Just as I felt her hand move, the guards held me away.
“Let go of me”. I yelled again. “My mother is awake, I need to speak to her”.
“We already called the doctor and nurses”.
Just as one of the guards told me that, a doctor and two nurses walked in.
“We need some time alone to attend to her”. The doctor told me and I respected that. I slowly walked out of the room and turned to look at my mother.
One of the nurses shut the door in front of me and I felt tears well up in my eyes again. I held them back and adjusted my sun shades, turning and walking away with the guards following closely behind.
I stomped out of the hospital and made it to the car. I opened the door myself and got in although I saw the guard rushing to open the door for me.
As I got in, he subtly closed the door and rounded the car to enter inside.
As the car rode away from the hospital environment, I removed my sun shades and picked my phone up.
I wondered how my mother was doing.
I was supposed to be there with her, I was supposed to see her and she would see me also immediately she opened her eyes. I would be the first she lays her eyes on.
I tapped my feet impatiently as I removed a business card from my handbag and dialed the hospital line. I looked out the window as the phone rang.
“What?”. I asked in a yell as my phone got snatched from my hand. “What is wrong with you?”.
“We can't let you make the phone call”.
I didn't understand one bit, he couldn't understand what…
“Turn the car around and take me to Donald's office”.
“Ma’am…”
“Oh! So you can't, right?”. I asked and opened the car door in the middle of the road.
The car behind us started honking but I couldn't care less as I threw one leg out. I was about to jump out.
